Why These Perfect Samples Will Help Calm Your Nerves For Good!

In that piece, we talked about the power of speech samples but we didn’t look at look how they can help you write what’s on your heart.
So, today, we are going to look at one of those masterpieces so you don’t spend so much time putting your exact thoughts and emotions into beautiful words!
On this blog and elsewhere, I have been hammering home on the need to use models whenever you have to write any kind of speech because...
- You are able to change a few words here and there and make it yours
- Should you decide to do something entirely unique, you can copy the ideas, words and phrases you want and then add it to your wedding anniversary message
- Finally, it’s a time saver if you have a few days to the anniversary reception and you suddenly realize you don’t have a speech ready or you are asked to give one at the last- minute!
As a speechwriter, I know hard it is to put down your exact thoughts on paper, which is why this afternoon, I have this nice gift for you.
This Can Still Help You Out!
Guess what in the box?
A beautiful 60th wedding anniversary speech by Jeff Sauer.
Before we dive right in, I just want you to know this one thing.
I know you might probably be looking for 1st, 2nd, 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th, 25th, 30th, 35th, 40th, 45th, 50th… marriage speech samples.
But, you can’t go wrong with this 60th anniversary example as it will not only open your eyes to what goes into every anniversary message, but also help you say what you really want to say without trying so hard!
So, please go grab your note pad and a pen and put on your thinking cap as I help you out.
Do This And The Guests Will Love Every Bit of Your Message
Have you ever read a book you couldn’t put down? If you have, then you can be sure that an awesome speech is more like reading a book that hooks you in from the very first page!
I don’t know about you but if you have had the chance to listen to great speeches, then one thing that grabs your attention is the opening line.
Take this example and you will understand why
Here you go:
Here is what Jeff said when he opened the speech.
'' Hello, my name is Jeff Sauer, Grandson of Norb and Lenore, and welcome to our celebration of 60 years of marriage between Lenore and Norby, or as we affectionately call them; Lenorby.
I will be your master of ceremonies for this event, and I hope that you’ll soon find that you are in good hands. Grandpa chose me to host this event because he says I remind him of a young Bob Hope.
I have no idea what that means, but I am taking it as a compliment.
Enough about me. The real reason why we are here is to celebrate the 60th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Norbert T Koch.''
To make our analyses worth it, I’d like to ask you a simple question: what do you make of that sample?
My friend, you have just 5 minutes to tell me what’s on your mind. You might go up and look it over.
Well, your time is up! By the way, here are my observations:
The writer began by telling everyone who he was. '' Hello, my name is Jeff Sauer, Grandson of Norb and Lenore’’ Lesson learned: You should also do same.
He also reveals why they are at the party after welcoming the guests: The real reason why we are here is to celebrate the 60th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Norbert T Koch.''
Lessons learned: Just follow what he did.
I hope you have some take points to take away from those ideas.
On no account should you assume that everyone at the anniversary party will know who you are!
Always tell them who you are and your relationship with the couple!
That being said, let's see the introduction.
See it below
''60 years! 6 – 0. That’s not a typo. 60 years! That is a long time for two people to be together. In fact, this type of longevity is almost unheard of in modern times. This is a testament to their long-lasting love and devotion.
To see how they made it this far, let me give you some insight into how things came to be.
Do you think this is a great introduction? I think it’s very good but not extraordinary.
But, the guests will love it because I am sitting here and just imagining how Jeff uttered the words: ''60 years! 6 – 0. That’s not a typo. 60 years!
A good actor will bring the house down when he says that.
What would you have written instead if you were in Jeff’s shoes?
This would have been my opening remarks
Can You Write Something Like This?
60 years is such a long time for great things to be accomplished and I think my parent's greatest accomplishment is the love they have for each other because life is all about being loved and be loved in return!
How does that compare with that above example? Excellent? Unique? You be the judge.
Here Are 3 Ways To Start Your Introduction…Which One Will You Go For?
The truth is there are more than three ways to start on a positive note.
Do you want to have them?
- You can start with a joke or funny one-liners but make sure you tie it to the theme of your speech.
Here is a couple you can use:
-''In marriage, a woman tends to do all the shopping and a man all the working…if you allow your wife to do both, your blood pressure will go high''- Unknown
-''By all means, marry. If you get a good wife, you’ll become happy. If you get a bad one, you’ll become a philosopher.'' - Socrates
''The best way to get most husbands to do something is to suggest that perhaps they're too old to do it.''
- Ann Bancroft
''Marriage is a three-ring circus. First the engagement ring, the wedding ring, then the suffering.''
- Milton Berle
The best part is you can also start with a good story about the couple’s life or any other story you have heard but make sure the message of that tale resonates with your marriage anniversary speech. People love stories so you can’t afford to use this tip.
- That’s not all, you can use love or marriage quotes like what I used for my own example:
''The greatest thing you will learn is to love and be loved in return''-Eden Ahbez
''Marriage has no guarantees, if that’s why you are looking for, then go live with a car battery''-Erma Bombeck
''Where there is love there is life.''– Mahatma Gandhi
"When we got married I told my wife 'If you leave me, I'm going with you.' And she never did."
— James Fineous McBride
Any of those quotes can help you so put down which one you think can help and go back to read my example plus Jeff’s and try to build your intro from there.
Right now, I want us to continue with our wedding or marriage anniversary speech sample as we have a lot to learn. Remember, my mission is to help things fairly easy for you.
So, don’t put down your glasses yet.
Here’s the continuation...
Norbert Thomas Koch and Mary Lenore Leroux had modest upbringings. Norb grew up in North Minneapolis, back in a time where it was safe to drive through the neighborhood with your windows down. Lenore grew up in the town of Hamel, on a farm that is now a high school and a housing development.
Due to some unfortunate turns in life, Norb was tasked with helping to prove for his family from an early age. In order to make ends meet, he had to make money in whatever way he could, including selling newspapers and shoveling sidewalks.
One can only assume that working at such an early age instilled him with a great work ethic, and the drive necessary to achieve his own financial independence.
Lenore was a farm girl and still has the green thumb to prove it. Over the years I have heard many great stories about Grandma’s days on the farm, but I think my favorite is the story about when she took the truck for a spin with her sister Jeanette when grandma wasn’t yet a teenager.''
What Ideas Did You Get From Going Over That Piece?
Well, if you read over this piece Jeff talks about Norbert’s and Lenore’s upbringing and how life was like for them.
If you want to take a similar route, that’s fine.
If not, then I have plenty of ideas for you.
Before I do that, you have to go back to ask yourself who you are to the couple.
A brother, sister, parents, son, or daughter?
With that at the back of your mind, ask yourself if the information you have about them would be sufficient to write a good piece!
Here’s the deal!
Do You Want To Go For The ‘’Body’’ Or The ‘’Skeleton?’’
Just like Jeff, you too can write a heartwarming speech by putting down a wonderful storyline.
Thankfully, there are proven ways of getting ideas for the body and then organizing it to make sure they flow in a logical order so your speech is not hard to follow.
Here are 5 Proven Ways to Put Your Ideas Together in a Way That Will Make You Loved, Appreciated, and Respected!
- Suppose, you are writing to your parents, you can begin with a quote about parental love or the love of grandparents or quotes about love and work it out from there.
Let’s see how we can do that by first looking up a few quotes.
''One of the greatest titles in the world is parent, and one of the biggest blessings in the world is to have parents to call mom and dad.'' - Jim DeMint
'' Parents are the ultimate role models for children. Every word, movement, and action has an effect. No other person or outside force has a greater influence on a child than the parent. '' - Bob Keeshan
'' To be a good father and mother requires that the parents defer many of their own needs and desires in favor of the needs of their children. As a consequence of this sacrifice, conscientious parents develop a nobility of character and learn to put into practice the selfless truths taught by the Savior Himself. ''- James E. Faust
'' At the end of the day, the most overwhelming key to a child's success is the positive involvement of parents.''-Jane D. Hull
''The best students come from homes where education is revered: where there are books, and children see their parents reading them.''-Leo Buscaglia
''Being kind is the most important thing I've ever been taught. That's what my parents always told me - more important than ambition or success is being kind to people. The cornerstone of my life. What I aspire to is to be kind.'' -Rafe Spall
I can’t do this without you. So, let me again ask you which of those quotes you want to use for this assignment.
Ok…a lot of you have voted for quote # 3:
''To be a good father and mother requires that the parents defer many of their own needs and desires in favor of the needs of their children. As a consequence of this sacrifice, conscientious parents develop a nobility of character and learn to put into practice the selfless truths taught by the Savior Himself.'' - James E. Faust
and quote # 6:
'' Being kind is the most important thing I've ever been taught. That's what my parents always told me - more important than ambition or success is being kind to people. The cornerstone of my life. What I aspire to is to be kind.'' -Rafe Spall
Now, here’s what happens when both quotes are combined to create something new...
Here Is A Very Short And Sweet Wedding Anniversary Speech Example
'' Dad and mom, when I became a mom for the very first time, you came over to visit and I remember you told me that being a caring mom requires that making my husband my first priority and the little child the next.
I didn’t understand what you really meant when you said that.
When we had our fourth child, I realized your words were worth more than gold.
Mark and Jennifer (your grandchildren) will be getting married very soon and they keep telling me that your advice is the best gift they have ever gotten from me.
I love you, mom. I love you dad and I truly appreciate all that you have done for me over the years...''
I hope you too can write something with the other quotations. You just have to paraphrase them to make them yours.
Second, you can simply thank your parents, wife, husband, friend, brother, sister, grandparents for what they have done for you and just end it. That way, it will be short and heartfelt.
Third, you can use stories (fiction) to write up something memorable. Take the Titanic story for example.
If you want to use that and other stories, you have to draw lessons from them and use them creatively.
Fourth, if you are married, then, you can tell how your friends, parents, or grandparents’ marriage have been a great model.
Fifth, you can also begin on a hilarious note by including jokes or funny comments made by the couple. But, still, make sure it is in line with what you want the audience to hear. Never ever go offbeat.
Now, let us go back to listen to our kind brother, Jeff.
'' When the time came, Norb served our country and defended the free world in the Second World War. He was stationed in the Pacific and had one of the most dangerous positions in the entire Air Force. Fortunately, he survived without a scratch and made it back stateside a true hero, armed with an arsenal of ambition and some great bedtime stories for his grandchildren.
Upon arrival back to the states, Grandpa enrolled in college at the University of Minnesota, where he played baseball while completing his college degree.
It was through baseball that Norb fatefully met Lenore, and it was through persistence that Grandma finally let him take her out on a date. After some time of courtship, they were married.
Grandpa sold life insurance and made quite a living for himself. I would go into details of individual deals and the perseverance involved with making it in the life insurance business, but I don’t want to put everyone to sleep.
While I have been blessed with the ability to find humor in everyday things, it’s almost impossible to keep a crowd excited when talking about Life Insurance. I’m not a miracle worker here!
However, I do know first-hand that Grandpa must have been really good at his profession because he has a wealth of trophies corresponding to his various achievements.
- Salesman of the year – (13 times).
- President of the Minneapolis Association of Life Underwriters.
- The George Washington Founding Father of Modern Life Insurance Sales Lifetime Achievement Award. (OK, I made that one up)
You name it, and he’s got a trophy for it. During his day, Norb was like the Arnold Palmer of insurance sales (or for the younger crowd, he was the Tiger Woods of his field).
Insurance aside, when you look at his trophy case, you’ll also notice that he was once the Tiger Woods of Minnesota Golf. This guy has more trophies than I can count. There is so much bronze on his shelves that the only thing missing is a bronze statue of Norby himself!
Proving that they are meant to be together, Grandma has amassed herself quite a few trophies as well.
In fact, rumor has it that she can beat Grandpa on the links nowadays. Both can shoot their age on the golf course, which I find quite impressive. I would need to be in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s oldest man before I could ever accomplish that feat!''
Did you notice how the writer talks about their individual achievements as part of the body of his speech?
Can you look over a short sample and find the one thing that will make the wedding guests laugh out loud?
This Will Make You Laugh Out Loud!
I think it’s: '' There is so much bronze on his shelves that the only thing missing is a bronze statue of Norby himself!
I almost fell off my seat when I read this part of this beautiful presentation. Put down funny memories you can recall and incorporate them into your message and it will make things very memorable.
Never forget to share their good and bad times and how they made it through it all as such accounts are the heartbeat of all wedding speeches: ''Like any long-term relationship, it takes work to keep things running smoothly on a day-to-day basis. I’m not going to lie and say that everything has been good every step along the way, but the good far outweighs the bad, and overall the past 60 years have been great!''
Well, But Jeff tells us that their greatest trophies are their children and grandchildren.
You better hear it from the horse’s own mouth:
''But their real trophies are their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; all two hundred of us. Well, maybe not 200, but there are quite a few descendants in the room today. That’s what happens when you have 8 children! ‘’
I hope by now you agree with me that stories are the perfect ingredient that all great speech writers use to build their case.
How To End Your Speech So The Guests Compliment You
A perfect closing might make good use of the following ideas
- Thanking your parents or the couple for their love over the years and how that has made you a much better person. See what Jeff said: ''As you can see, it is obvious that Grandma and Grandpa love…
Over the past 60 years, they have instilled this love into everyone around them and they have served as a catalyst for all of our life’s achievements.
While nothing can take the place of two sets of grandparents, I feel you did everything you could to make up that gap for me.
Thank you for everything you have done. I love you so much. Happy 60th anniversary.
Love, your little Jeffy.''
- You can say what your best wishes are for them as seen below

- You can end with a blessing from the scriptures. My favorite is Psalm 128
Psalm 128
A song of ascents.
- 1 Blessed are all who fear the Lord,
who walk in obedience to him.
2 You will eat the fruit of your labor;
blessings and prosperity will be yours.
3 Your wife will be like a fruitful vine
within your house;
your children will be like olive shoots
around your table.
4 Yes, this will be the blessing
for the man who fears the Lord.
- 5 May the Lord bless you from Zion;
may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem
all the days of your life.
6 May you live to see your children’s children—
peace be on Israel.
