I was petrified to say the least . So I said, okay, but can you let dad do that while I wear your favorite party hat? She just laughed and said, ‘’ Mom, no. Dad, I think it’s time for dad to retire from speech-giving duties. He needs to on go speech retirement because he speaks at every event and you have to do that. ‘’

 

Well, I have got a surprise for her. I have written 10 pages, front and back, each one highlighting a special moment from her life. But, don’t worry I will spare you the details….for now.

At school, she loved to play soccer and was her team’s favorite player. Through it all, she didn’t rest on her cleats but worked so hard to be on the dean’s list. She also went on to become Prom Queen due to her poise, kindness, and genuine care for her friends and others.

 

Amanda, you’ve always been a special person, even as an infant, we knew how special, how precious you were.  When you came into our lives, you rekindled our passion and commitment to each other.

You’ve also been our firm backbone. I remember when you took various jobs at school and on weekends to support yourself and the family when your dad passed away a couple of years ago.

 

Today, I feel like the proudest mom ever because you’re getting married to Gary, a real gentleman you have known for 6 years now.

Guess what! Working as a nurse brings you into close contact with the infirm on a daily basis and you can understand the pain they have to endure just to survive.

Well, if I were to write a short piece as an example using any of the above quotes, I would use George’s Best quote and that Indian proverb to come up with something like this:

Her dad nicknamed her Mother Theresa-a name she gave her because she did everything just like the famous catholic nun.

She was even the valedictorian of her class when she left college. She started a website while in school to educate ladies about their sexuality-especially breast care and its related issues.

 

We Were Worried About Her Dream Man

When she was ripe for marriage, my husband and I just prayed she found a right marriage partner who will make her happy and give her the respect and love she deserves.

She had been emotionally devastated by a previous relationship that did not go too well for her. She almost lost her life then because she was totally broken and we just hoped God sends her a kind and patient gentlemen at the right time.

 

One evening at a family evening, she told us about a new man she had met. Honestly, we did not feel too comfortable with her decision but we advised her to be more cautious this time. We were afraid she might be heartbroken a second time.

We, however, decided to give her the benefit of the doubt so we asked to bring her gentleman home. When we met Jimmy, we were unimpressed. But appearances they say are always deceptive, so we decided to probe his intelligence and look into his character a bit.

We kept an eye on him for close to a year and we changed our mind about him when we got to know that he was a real gentleman. Very humble, meek, and honest. I also realized that he was a man of integrity.

 

 

I loved and respected him a lot because my husband possessed those same qualities and that had kept our marriage going for 40 beautiful years.

My husband was also very pleased with his conduct so we gave them our blessings and the wedding planning began in earnest.

Tragedy Strikes

But things changed for the worse when she and Jimmy visited us I decided to cook supper but she restrained me and asked that she take my place instead.

I went inside my bedroom to rest after such a tiring day.
After a while, I heard someone screamed out loud but I thought it was one of those pranks my younger children usually played on me.

 

The fellow cried a second time and I quickly rushed to the kitchen and there my Alicia was wincing in pain on the cold floor.

 

The soup on the gas stove had poured over her feet and scraped her skin off. I called my husband and we sped off to a nearby hospital.

 

She was admitted and we were told that she would have to undergo surgery. At this point, I did not know what to do. Besides, she needed skin grafting and that was going to cost us $20,000!

''Oh my God, where are we going to get that money?''

 

 

I cried as I wept on my husband’s shoulders day and night.
''Honey, she would be alright '', my husband would say reassuringly while he had his right arm around my waist.

We took turns caring for her at the health facility. It was at this time, I realized that my daughter had met the man of her dreams.

 

He Was God-Sent

Jimmy was at her bedside most of the time. Sometimes, he wept too. His parents were also very supportive too and so were members of our extended family.

 

One afternoon, a phone call from the doctor revealed that her toes might be cut off if the surgery wasn’t done….. real quick because the infection on her right leg might spread to her toes.

 

We prayed and pondered over what to do. My husband suggested that we call of…. the wedding but friends and family members had written to confirm that they would be coming to the wedding. 

We were all in low spirits and we were wondering what to do. Our Alicia was hurting and something had to be done fast.

 

We Found A Way Out

 

Then something said to me-Why not sell your automobile? I resisted that voice because it was an antique car and those vehicles were hard to come by.

 

But, I later gave in when I couldn’t bear the sight of my daughter’s agony so I placed an ad in the newspaper, and in less than a week, someone bought it for $50,000.

All we hoped for at this time was a successful operation and not an amputee daughter after we had paid the whooping hospital bill.

I wondered whether her feet would not have any ugly scars after the surgery was done and if she would look good in her wedding shoes.

 

As I mused over this over and over again, the doctor called us one Friday evening to tell us she was doing well after a successful operation and that she might be discharged in a day or two.

 

I couldn’t believe it. I broke the news to my family and Jimmy-Alicia’s sweetheart.

The feeling was just incredible when we picked her up from the hospital on Sunday. The affected flesh was as fresh as a little baby with hardly any visible scars.

 

My Husband Came To My Rescue

We resumed the wedding planning in earnest but we wanted to make her big day very special –seeing what we had gone through as a family.
I couldn’t think of a neat idea.

 

Days later, my husband suggested that I give a mother of the bride speech. My face fell at his suggestion because I once embarrassed myself when asked to give a short speech at a family party.

In that letter, you asked me how I led such a happy life though things were overwhelming at the time.  When I read that letter, I couldn’t hold back my tears.

 

It’s hard to really tell how we sailed the rough waters. But, I think it’s been the grace of God plus your constant words of encouragement. Your touching words were like dew on dry land.

 

Today makes us even much prouder as you are getting married to someone you really love.

Sometimes, your words alone cannot make the wedding guests excited but how you appear on stage and what you appear with can make all the difference.

 

I recently wrote a speech for this woman from Australia and she asked me to add some funny lines even though the information she supplied wasn’t too interesting.

 

She told me her daughter hated seeing insects, so as I thought of how best to make her speech funny, I had this brainwave.

 

This is what I told her. Abigail, why don’t you wrap and present an insecticide spray to the groom and tell him to use it kill all those nasty and horrible bugs.

 

Believe it or not, our plan worked and the guests loved every bit of her humor.

Good evening and thanks to everyone for coming to the wedding of my precious daughter Pearl and my son-in-law Chris.

Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to tell you a story. Many years ago, a French husband and wife were traveling through Eastern Europe with the wife’s aged aunt.

The old woman had been pains in the butt from the word go, complaining about everything… the food, the hotels, the weather, and the people.

   

Finally, she went too far and insulted a small nation’s queen. As a result, all three members of the family were sentenced to corporal punishment in the form of fifty lashes.

 

 

However, because the nation did not wish to be viewed as hostile to foreign visitors, the queen agreed that each be granted a wish before receiving the punishment.

 

The wife said that she would like pillows to be bound to her rear end and so the pillows were tied in place and the aunt received her fifty lashes. Finally, it was the husband‘s turn.

 

''I have two wishes if that’s possible'', he said

That’s acceptable… said the Chief Of Police. ..I am empowered by her royal highness to grant you two wishes. What are your wishes Sir?

First, I would like to be given one hundred lashes instead of fifty.

The Police Chief stood speechless and asked: ''Are you sure? That’s an unusual request. Nevertheless, I would grant your wish and what’s your second wish''

I want my wife’s aunt to be bound to my back.

 

As  Pearl and Chris, embark on the journey of marriage together, they will surely encounter similar situations because we don’t live in a perfect world. But they can make the most of every situation by seeing challenges as blessings in disguise and they will come out together stronger for it no matter what life throws at them.

 She climbed up a tree in our backyard and shouted ‘’ Up, up and away and promptly flew back down. The neighborhood kids cheered, thinking they had just witnessed a real-life super hero. But, the adventurous little girl wasn’t satisfied with just one attempt.

 

She tried again and face-planted into a pile of sawdust. Her older brother rushed to us, Mom, Alice fell out of the tree. We rushed over, panicked, only to find her lying on the ground, pretending to be dead.

 

And then in a moment of pure comedic genius, she sat up, sneezed out a mouthful of sawdust and declared, ‘’ Mom, I think Superman died twice before he got his strength!

Before we do that, let’s look at some comedy techniques you can employ to endear yourself to the wedding guests.

First is self-deprecating jokes. This is where someone makes a joke about himself or herself.  You may use this if you want to make fun of yourself.

 

Here’s an example:

 

Hello everyone! For those of you who don’t know me, I am Diana, the mother of the beautiful bride. I am affectionately known as ‘’ Toothy Grin’’ or should I say, the ‘’ Toothless Grin?’’

 

I have a confession to make: My love for chocolate is so strong that it’s literally cost me a few teeth, including the front ones!

 

But don’t worry, I have learned to smile with my mouth closed or with a mouthful of chocolate depending on the situation.

 

In all seriousness, I am thrilled to be here tonight.

 

Another is stand-up comedy: a delivery style whereby someone entertains with jokes and humorous stories. This is employed by most mothers who share hilarious anecdotes about their daughter’s life. 

 

Another is a situational comedy: a kind of comedy arising out of everyday situations. It is similar to stand-up comedy.

 

Now, which of those styles will you go for? Please decide and write it down. It’s also possible to combine two or more styles.

 

Now, let us see some simple tips and ideas that can help you write a laugh-out-loud mother of the bride speech.

 

You should start by saying thank you to persons who have helped your daughter become who she is today.

Such people could be her dad, grandparents, siblings, sister-in-law, etc. So, put down their names and explain why you are thanking them.

This is an example: I am also indebted to my sister Beverly (Pearl’s Aunt) for her love and attention. Aunt Beverly is the “fun” aunt and party thrower! 

Got it? That is how it is done.

 

After you have said that, you need to engage the audience. Well, you can’t force yourself to act like a clown if you are not a naturally funny person.

 

Here some ideas that can provoke laughter even if you are not endowed with a funny gene.

 

• If your son-in-law is from another country or belongs to a different culture, you can learn how to greet the audience in his dialect and you will have some good laughs nonetheless.

 

• You may also start by saying: ''I promise that this is going to be the funniest mother of the bride speech you have ever or read’’ and then you roll down a very long sheet of paper and jokingly add this to your speech: ''Seriously, did you believe me when I said that?  Remember, I have raised her for 30 years now. She’s my baby girl. You are even luckier to have gotten these few pages considering how long she’s been under my roof…I just didn’t have the funds for a blockbuster movie about her life…I would have tried.

• You can also upstage the occasion by wearing funny clothes or accessories like a bizarre-looking wig or a weird pair of glasses, or outrageous outfit. This will surely have everyone in stitches.

 

• You may share a funny story about how you felt when she was born

 

Now, let us look at how to write the content or body of your toast. Sometimes, you don’t have to look for a funny word or technique to get the guests excited. Remember, you don’t have to force it. Just be yourself and let the laughter follow.

 

Telling a funny story or event can get everyone excited. Such tales can be either real or imagined as a truly authentic funny mother of the bride speech comes out of sharing funny incidents about your daughter's life.

 

Even if the story is imagined, you can make the most of it by connecting its morals to the theme of your speech if you want it to sound more impactful.

So, please be sensitive to her needs, protect her with all your strength, and don’t forget to pamper her with gifts. But do so in moderation else you might go broke like a church mouse because my daughter is such a tireless shopaholic.  

                                                                             

 

Here’s another example: Instead of saying your daughter was fun to be around. You can turn things around by rendering it like this:

 

Amanda was like a microwave when she was growing up. He was very was easy to take care of, very warm on the inside, and her constant, sunny smile warmed the hearts of everyone she ever met.

 

How To Write The Closing Lines Of Your Funny Mother Of The Bride Speech

 

• First, you can end with a hilarious poem about marriage.

• Second, if you have a good voice for singing, you can belt it out to make it hilarious. 

• Third, if you are very gifted with words, you can make your conclusion rhythmic. Below is a short example

It doesn’t matter where you go

You can always make it through any snow

And together you will make it work no matter how it goes

 

Try reading this out loud and you will notice how rhythmic the closing lines are. You can try composing one from a very good piece of poem.

• Fourth, you can share some time-tested marriage advice based on your own personal experiences like the one below.

• Fifth, you can simply end with some best wishes for the couple if you don’t want to give a piece of advice. You may use a couple of these:

Please bear in mind that your speech shouldn’t be funny from start to the end of it.

 

Again, if you are a deeply religious person or a Christian, you can use Bible verses like the ones below to make your speech sound sweet and spiritual.

 

Ecclesiastes 4:9: "Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone?"

 

Ephesians 5:25-33: "Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. Today, I stand here in front of you today, the proudest mom that ever lived because she’s made me so proud every step of the way. Eugenia, being your mom is a joy and privilege and I want you to know I love you so much.

But, it’s always been my hope and prayer that you would find someone to love and care for the rest of your life. When Dan walked into your life, I knew you had met the man of your dreams and I’m so excited that you’re getting married today.

And to you Dan, we are so thankful that you brought her to the altar. We are blessed that you now are a part of our family and we know you’re going to be an amazing dad.

Well, if you’re the ''bragging'' type but don’t want to make her accomplishments too obvious, you can render it like this:

''By dint of hard work and dedication, Mary accomplished so much wherever she found herself and brought such joy to hearts...Mary, we are so proud of you and thus far you have come down the road''

 

Do you notice how I said that without drawing attention to her sterling credentials?

Rather, use it as a platform for healing and peace since wedding celebrations are meant to unite and bring people together in love.
