He started climbing walls at a very young age, literally, and was soon thereafter bungee jumping the cats off the bunk beds. At age four, he held the family hostage in the driveway with the hose. Every time one of us tried to get past him to turn it off, he would shoot us full blast in the face with water. It took Uncle Joe to finally get the hose away from Jeremy and free us all.

Now, Toni and I met at Dan's Foods Grocery store when we were both 19. The first time I remember talking to her was when she was a checker and I was a bagger. I had asked her to work for me, and she said she would, as long as she didn't have to bag. Obviously, the managers were not ok with that, but I was really impressed by her easygoing manner, and her willingness to help me out.

We hung out for a few months after that and quickly realized how much we enjoyed each other's company. Through the years, we have been roommates in Utah, hiking and camping buddies, roommates in Indiana, lifelong friends, and now sisters. It hasn't always been easy, but Toni has made me work at it to make it as good as it is now.

I have known Jeremy for 23 years and Toni for 13, and I can't think of a better pair. My brother and my best friend. Before they ever dated, Toni always flirted with Jeremy, and I remember his retort to her attention. “Toni, I'm too young for you, and by the time I'm old enough for you, you'll be too old for me.” That must have been the hook that caught her. Who knew that all these years later, they would be getting married? But how wonderful that they did.

This marriage is not always going to be easy for them, but I think it will be a good one. Toni likes to talk about her feelings, and Jeremy doesn't like to talk at all. In fact, I've told Toni that being friends with me for all these years was just training for marrying Jeremy.

However, knowing the two of them, with two of the most caring, thoughtful, and generous hearts, I know they will be fine. Jeremy and I grew up together, Toni and I grew up in the real world together, and Toni and Jeremy will grow together as a family.

Now, having been married for a whole two years now, I have some expert marriage advice to give:

– Whenever you're wrong, admit it. Whenever you're right, be quiet.

– The best way to remember an anniversary is to forget it just once. (which Sean just learned!)

– If you're clever, you'll always have the last word. However, if you're really clever you won't use it.

– A happy wife is a happy life.

– AND Jeremy- don't ever worry that Toni will leave you. She has spent years training you, and she won't give that up easily.

Ladies and Gentlemen: you'll be pleased to know I am only going to speak for a couple of minutes because of my throat..… if I go on too long Maria has threatened to cut it! I just want to say a few things on this happy day.

For those of you that don't know me I'm Maria's sister, Susie.
I've decided not to tell any embarrassing stories because it would also be
embarrassing to me… and our parents probably don't know about most of
them.

Having known Maria for all her life I have a huge large library of stories to tell you that will leave her embarrassed and humiliated, but out of respect for her on her big day I have decided NOT to tell them.

(1) So I'm not going to tell you about the time that she was a senior in high school and two months before graduation she and her three friends were caught skipping school and when her parents punished her by making her take the school bus to school for the rest of the school year, she used her 12yr old sister at the time – that would be me- to be the lookout as she would sneak into her friends cars.

(2) And I'm not going to tell you about the time that Maria was three years old still living in a small village in Portugal. She was fascinated by these little ducks in a nearby pond and wanted to play with these ducklings so much that she would grab hold of them but the ducks got frightened and struggled to get out of these strange little girls’ hands, but Maria, still hoping the ducklings would play with her, would clutch them even tighter and ended up strangling them. To this day, people still wonder why there is an eerie shortage of ducks in our home village.

(3) And lastly I'm not going to tell you about the time my dad was outside barbecuing and asked Maria to run inside and tell her mom that he needed more charcoal. Now in the Portuguese language the word “charcoal” is incredibly similar to a profane word, which I will not repeat here today. So much to our mother's dismay, little Maria came running in declaring that her father needed more________!

Anyway, enough of the cheap shots. On a serious note..… It is an absolute honour for me to be your maid of honor today. You are a great sister, a great daughter and a great friend.

I've never seen you happier than you have been these last few years with Richard. I hope the best for you now and always. May you guys share everything in life together equally, including the housework!

We are all here today to celebrate everything that Maria and Rich have found in each other – a best friend, a lover, a teacher, a playmate, a true partner for life. As you sit side by side through this roller coaster of life remember to scream from the peaks, hold hands through the dips, laugh through the loop-the-loops and enjoy every twist and turn for the ride is better because you share it together. Separately, you are two special, remarkable people but together you are complete.

Ok…let’s dissect each idea one step at a time and see how best you can figure out this whole thing.

It makes a lot of sense that we use the above outline to frame our thoughts. So, let’s start with that.

If I were this sister, I would have added the fact that I appreciate her asking me to stand by her side her big and even thank her for honoring me this way. This addition would make her wedding very emotional.

This is a homework assignment for you: Just write down your relationship with the bride and how you feel about being her maid of honor. Or better still, how you felt when she chose you to be her maid of honor.

Here’s an example to buttress this point.

Anita is a social butterfly and has lots of friends. So, when her wedding day was approaching, I figured she would ask one of her friends with very vibrant personalities to take my place. Out of nowhere, she called me one summer afternoon and asked me to be her maid of honor which is an honor and privilege I hold in very high esteem.

The next idea on the list is…

A few thank you notes

You should start by thanking everyone for coming out from far and near to grace the event. Then, thank the bride for choosing you to be her maid of honor.

If you have bridesmaid to support you and the bride, then you can mention it and thank them as well.

I have to ask you this question: Are there other personalities you would like to include in your gratitude list? A hint: Are you the bride’s sister? If you are, you can thank your parents and extended family for molding your sister into the person she’s grown up to be.

There are some other figures you can say thank you to. Just do a little brainstorming to find out who deserves some words of gratitude.

Let’s look at the next item on the list:

A brief note before you start your speech

How you start your maid of honor speech will go a long way towards how well your speech is received. Hence, you should start on a bright note with one or more of these techniques.

Start with a joke.

You can start off with a nice quote. Any of these love quotes can probably work.

"In all the world, there is no heart for me like yours. In all the world, there is no love for you like mine." — Maya Angelou

"Love is passion, obsession, someone you can't live without." — William Parrish

"I love you not only for what you are, but for what I am when I am with you." — Elizabeth Barrett Browning

If you have a beautiful voice, you can start off by singing the bride’s favorite song or opening your speech with a tune everyone can sing along to. An example is seen below:

Questions to help you get some ideas down onto that paper: How would you like to start your maid of honor wedding speech? With a poem? Or A Song? Or What? The ball is in your court.

Let’s move on to what you’ve been waiting for:

A story/stories about the bride

This aspect of your maid of honor speech for your friend or sister is where it gets tricky for so many maids.

You have tons of memories deep down in your brain. But, it gets pretty hard when it comes to getting those ideas all down onto paper. But, how do you from staring at the blank white page to scripting it all down?

It’s simple. Just pour down every story you can remember about your bonds of friendship. You can write about stuff like:

Stories about where and when you first met
How you became close friends
When you traveled together
Birthday celebrations
Memorable getaways
Graduation ceremonies
Vacation Trips
Your shared interests or hobbies, etc.
Write about how the bride inspires you

This is a little assignment for you: Write down whatever you recall about your bonds of friendship and choose at least three stories you would like to weave into your maid of honor speech for the bride. This simple exercise can help you find content ideas for your wedding speech with ease.

Let’s look at another thing related to the above:

A story about the groom

If you have been friends with the bride and groom for a while, then you can obviously write something about the groom as shown in this example.

Share a few thoughts about marriage if you can/want to

I know it’s not customary for maid of honors to deliver pieces of advice for the bride and groom. But, you would be seen as a thoughtful and caring friend or sister if you can add a piece of advice to your speech.

If you just can’t do that for obvious reasons, you can probably chip in with a nice quote about love or marriage.

You may use any of these:
