The wisest thing you can ever do when you are asked to deliver a groomsman speech is to look up several examples online.As you know, however, the vast majority of wedding speakers just reproduce the examples they find online without actually figuring out what goes into writing such speeches.
I remember that about 10 years ago, I had this wedding speech example on this website and a groom from South Africa asked me to review his toast and I was a little surprised that he had copied my speech word for word without modifying it.
This is partly due to the fact that most groomsmen don’t know how to alter their speeches to make it uniquely theirs. But I still feel that’s your best away out of what would ordinarily be a very stressful situation if you are a complete loss for words or don’t have a way with words.

Hello my name's Steve and I'm Gavin's best man, although I'm sure Gavin will have a new name for me by the time I've finished this.
When Gavin asked me to be his best man I was initially thrilled at the prospect. I have known Gavin for over 10 long years now. When I first met him in college he was loud, aggressive, rude, abusive and swore a lot, but just look at the man he's become now…..nothing has changed. Whilst at college we discovered a local nightclub called Winkers. I would regularly witness Gavin's unique, raw, undiscovered style of dancing in Winkers that left the women speechless. By speechless I mean absolutely none of them would speak to him.
I'd like to mention Gavin's good points. Gavin is intelligent, caring, trusting and good look…look… (Look at Gavin) “I'm really sorry Gavin; I can't read your handwriting”
One of Gavin's strongest traits is loyalty; he is a Leeds United fan after all. A team that has done nothing except disappoint him and betray his hopes and dreams for the past 5 years. If that is anything to go by Sarah doesn't have to make any effort for the next 5 years, she can make him miserable, and break all her wedding vows and generally walk all over he……and he'll still feel that things will turn around come August.
Gavin used to a good runner as a young man. Unfortunately Steve soon convinced him that getting plastered in the Black Horse in Chorleywood was the way to go instead. It certainly was a shame to see such a promising athletic career go down the pan at the tender age of 12.
Many of you will be aware that Gavin and Sarah have recently purchased their first house together. This house does require a bit of DIY work, and anyone who knows Gavin will know that he is not exactly a DIY king. However, in order to get the house looking good he assures me that since moving in he and Sarah have been banging and screwing at every opportunity.
In the run-up to the wedding Gavin had something on his mind that was bothering him, so he decided to ask the Vicar about it. “Vicar” he said, “what do you think about sex before marriage?” “Well”, said the Vicar, “I'm absolutely fine with it as long as you still get here on time”.
Gavin is a generous man, and demonstrated this to all his friends during the stag weekend. I'm not talking about the champagne he bought for us all; I'm talking about our visit to the go-cart track. Whilst racing he consistently let everybody overtake him with absolutely no thought for himself. Talking of stag weekends, that brings me nicely onto the next subject.
The stag weekend
The stag weekend was difficult to organise, partly because I had to do it and partly because getting money out of some of our friends is harder than getting blood from a stone, Rawcliffe was out as we have been banned from most pubs there, therefore we decided that we had to go further afield, so a stag night was changed to a stag weekend.
We thought about Dublin, but it was no good, we had already been there and they hadn't forgotten. We tried Amsterdam, but were told politely not to bother by the Dutch authorities so in the end we settled on Newcastle.
This town was a good choice for two reasons. Firstly, it was far enough away from home for none of us to be recognised and secondly it was far enough away from home to prevent Gavin from doing his usual Saturday night party trick of drinking like a fish for 2 hours, hurling abuse at his friends for being ‘lightweights’ and then hailing a taxi home at 8pm on his own in a drunken state.
Fortunately this didn't happen, not because Gavin wasn't drunk, it was simply because no Geordie taxi driver in their right mind would let a shaven haired Southern drunkard into their cab dressed in a French Maids outfit
Sarah
When I first met Sarah my impression was of a beautiful, witty, charming, clever, friendly and thoughtful person. But she soon ruined this by agreeing to marry Gavin.
Speaking of Sarah, I would like to say how beautiful she looks today in that fantastic dress … Gavin likes it too as he thinks it blends well with the rest of the kitchen.
Gavin truly is a lucky man today marrying Sarah; she is a wonderful lady who deserves a good husband … so I think Gavin has done a fantastic job at marrying her before she had a chance to find one.
Sarah has become a good friend since I have known her. She is kind, thoughtful and caring and I know her father pulled her to one side just before the wedding to give her some advice on three things to remember:
Aisle. As it is the longest walk you'll ever take
Altar. The place where 2 become 1
Hymn. This is where the congregation celebrate your coming together
Sarah certainly took this advice to heart; indeed I heard her muttering the three words under her breath as she walked down the aisle “AISLE ALTAR HYMN”, “AISLE ALTAR HYMN”,

Let’s start with the Introduction. The introductory or opening remark in speechwriting is like being on a first date with a girl you really admire. You’re most likely going to score great points if you make the right first impression.
So, it is with starting strong. Most people have become accustomed to hearing several boring wedding speeches and if you can start and end very well, your speech will be the most talked -about at the rehearsal dinner or wedding night.
There’s nothing wrong with starting like this writer did:
‘’ Hello my name's Steve and I'm Gavin's best man, although I'm sure Gavin will have a new name for me by the time I've finished this. ‘’
As you can see, that extract is uninspiring to say the least. What if we could spark excitement by using any of these ideas?
First, you can start with a love quote to make it very romantic or emotional. You may use one or more of these quotes.
‘’Love isn’t something you find. Love is something that finds you’’- Loretta Young
‘’Love is shown more in deeds than in words’’- Saint Ignatius
‘’Love is that condition in which the happiness of another person is essential to your own.’’- Robert A. Heinlein, Stranger in a Strange Land
‘’Love is like the wind, you can't see it but you can feel it.’’- Nicholas Sparks, A Walk to Remember
‘’To love is to recognize yourself in another’’- Eckhart Tolle
Second, you can make it a little dramatic by starting with a quiz. That sounds ridiculous, right? Ok, just imagine how happy everyone would be if you make a small quiz using basic details about the bride and groom and gifting a few gifts to participants who had the answers right.
To give you an idea, you can ask for the full name of the name of the groom or bride and give a small gift (chocolate) to that person who got it right. You better give it a try!
Third, if you are musically gifted like this guy, you can write a simple song about the couple. You may also modify the lyrics of a well-known song everyone can sing along to.
Fourth, if the wedding day coincides with either the groom’s or bride’s birthday, just comment on it and ask everyone to join you in singing a happy birthday song(for fun) before you get into your groomsman speech. I am sure the celebrant’s family and friends will be happy to know about this.

What do you really admire about him?
How has he impacted your life?
What you can do now: Use your answers to write a first rough draft. Then, you can trim it down for a second draft until you get it done right.
And that brings us to the last item on the list:
How to Write the Conclusion of Your Groomsman Speech
The ending of your speech is as crucial as the opening remarks because when it’s all said and done the audience will remember your closing remarks the most.

Second, you can gift the couple a nice gift before you go back to your seat.
Third, you can modify the lyrics of this song and close with it. If you can do it well, everyone will laugh out loud. You can probably sing it if you have a good singing voice. For example, I were ending with this song, this is how I would alter the words of the song.

Hello my name's Steve and I'm Gavin's best man, although I'm sure Gavin will have a new name for me by the time I've finished this.
When Gavin asked me to be his best man I was initially thrilled at the prospect. Unfortunately it didn't take long for this feeling of wellbeing to dissolve into utter apprehension as I remembered the last time I had to stand up in a room full of people..… I was found guilty and fined £300. “Wait for laughs to finish”
I have known Gavin for over 10 long years now. When I first met him in college he was loud, aggressive, rude, abusive and swore a lot, but just look at the man he's become now…..nothing has changed. Whilst at college we discovered a local nightclub called Winkers. I would regularly witness Gavin's unique, raw, undiscovered style of dancing in Winkers that left the women speechless. By speechless I mean absolutely none of them would speak to him.
I'd like to mention Gavin's good points. Gavin is intelligent, caring, trusting and good look…look… (Look at Gavin) “I'm really sorry Gavin; I can't read your handwriting”
One of Gavin's strongest traits is loyalty; he is a Leeds United fan after all. A team that has done nothing except disappoint him and betray his hopes and dreams for the past 5 years. If that is anything to go by Sarah doesn't have to make any effort for the next 5 years, she can make him miserable, and break all her wedding vows and generally walk all over he……and he'll still feel that things will turn around come August.
Gavin used to a good runner as a young man. Unfortunately Steve soon convinced him that getting plastered in the Black Horse in Chorleywood was the way to go instead. It certainly was a shame to see such a promising athletic career go down the pan at the tender age of 12.
Many of you will be aware that Gavin and Sarah have recently purchased their first house together. This house does require a bit of DIY work, and anyone who knows Gavin will know that he is not exactly a DIY king. However, in order to get the house looking good he assures me that since moving in he and Sarah have been banging and screwing at every opportunity.
In the run-up to the wedding Gavin had something on his mind that was bothering him, so he decided to ask the Vicar about it. “Vicar” he said, “what do you think about sex before marriage?” “Well”, said the Vicar, “I'm absolutely fine with it as long as you still get here on time”.
Gavin is a generous man, and demonstrated this to all his friends during the stag weekend. I'm not talking about the champagne he bought for us all; I'm talking about our visit to the go-cart track. Whilst racing he consistently let everybody overtake him with absolutely no thought for himself. Talking of stag weekends, that brings me nicely onto the next subject.
The stag weekend
The stag weekend was difficult to organise, partly because I had to do it and partly because getting money out of some of our friends is harder than getting blood from a stone, Rawcliffe was out as we have been banned from most pubs there, therefore we decided that we had to go further afield, so a stag night was changed to a stag weekend.
We thought about Dublin, but it was no good, we had already been there and they hadn't forgotten. We tried Amsterdam, but were told politely not to bother by the Dutch authorities so in the end we settled on Newcastle. This town was a good choice for two reasons. Firstly, it was far enough away from home for none of us to be recognised and secondly it was far enough away from home to prevent Gavin from doing his usual Saturday night party trick of drinking like a fish for 2 hours, hurling abuse at his friends for being ‘lightweights’ and then hailing a taxi home at 8pm on his own in a drunken state.
Fortunately this didn't happen, not because Gavin wasn't drunk, it was simply because no Geordie taxi driver in their right mind would let a shaven haired Southern drunkard into their cab dressed in a French Maids outfit
Sarah
When I first met Sarah my impression was of a beautiful, witty, charming, clever, friendly and thoughtful person. But she soon ruined this by agreeing to marry Gavin.
Speaking of Sarah, I would like to say how beautiful she looks today in that fantastic dress … Gavin likes it too as he thinks it blends well with the rest of the kitchen.
Gavin truly is a lucky man today marrying Sarah; she is a wonderful lady who deserves a good husband … so I think Gavin has done a fantastic job at marrying her before she had a chance to find one.
Sarah has become a good friend since I have known her. She is kind, thoughtful and caring and I know her father pulled her to one side just before the wedding to give her some advice on three things to remember:
Aisle. As it is the longest walk you'll ever take
Altar. The place where 2 become 1
Hymn. This is where the congregation celebrate your coming together
Sarah certainly took this advice to heart; indeed I heard her muttering the three words under her breath as she walked down the aisle “AISLE ALTAR HYMN”, “AISLE ALTAR HYMN”,

In the days leading up to this marriage I thought it would be a good idea to seek out some wedding advice from our mutual friends so that Gavin and Sarah can benefit from their wisdom:

Short-self introduction
A lot of times most groomsmen begin their wedding speeches without letting everyone know who they are and their relationship with the bride and groom. That goes against wedding speech etiquette. It’s always a good idea to introduce yourself before you start your speech.
This cliché always work:
For those of you who don’t know me, I am Graham, proud brother of the groom.
To make it funnier, you can say it like this:
For those of you who don’t know me, I am Graham, proud brother of the groom. Of course, I am the wiser, more handsome, silly older brother of the groom. My friends here call me cucumber because it’s my other nickname. I actually have like two other nicknames….those sound weird.... So just for tonight, I would like you to call me Mr. Graham Cucumber!
Did you notice how I managed to make you smile with that little introduction? If you are the brother of the groom, you can humorously thank your mom and dad for their love and support.
Then, you should thank everyone for coming out from far and near to support the couple.
We are not done yet. Let’s look at the third idea:

Your opening remarks is undoubtedly the most important part of your groomsman speech but most wedding speakers don’t it so well because the vast majority of them are accustomed to starting with remarks they have heard at weddings.

As you can see, those opening lines are not so impressive. I know it can sound cliché for most groomsmen to say that but that’s always on the lips of those speakers.
Having said that; I am going to share with you ideas about how to make your introductory remarks very unique and special.
First, you can start with a nice song everyone can sing along to and your speech will be a hit. You can get an idea from this talented guy.
Second, you can start with a joke. It could be an inside joke, a joke about your friendship, or you can even start with a funny story about what happened before your brother was born or any hilarious anecdote that occurred during your childhood.
What you can do now: Sit back and reflect and write down happy memories you’ve had with the groom and bride.
Third, you can simply make your speech rhyme. Just look at this example…
Ok…here are a short poem you can modify too for your groomsman speech
Today, my brother has taken the most important step in his life
He has chosen to marry a special woman on the most important day of his life
There’s no greater joy for a man to find that she’s found a woman to love his whole life
What a perfect way to start life with someone you love
And when life gets tough, he can find someone to hold and to love
Love is sweet when you share with someone you love . So love one another and you will find that love is the best gift there is.
Let’s get on to the next point:
Share memorable stories about the groom
You’ll agree with me that there are so many stories you can share about the groom. But it gets hard to know which stories to choose from; especially if you have had several wonderful moments with your best friend or friend.
So, it makes sense that you winnow down the stories and pick at least two great stories you would like to go with.
This simple mental exercise can help you do that. Put on your thinking cap and write down answers next to each question:
When did you meet him?
What drew him to your side?
What do you really admire about him?
What memorable stories would you like to share with the wedding guests(write several of them down and pick two or three from the pool)
How has he become a better person over the years?
Action tip: Write down answers to those questions and use them to write a rough draft which you can always go back to trim down and refine.
The game is still on…let’s look at the next idea:
Share some good stories about the bride
If you have known the bride for a very long time, just write down many stories about her and just use what you are comfortable with.
Please note: If you don’t know her too well, just say this: ‘’ you are happy that the groom has found someone to spend the next chapter of his life with ‘’
In that same vein, you can humorously comment on how they complement each other or look good together.
Finally, let’s look at…
How to write the ending of the groomsman speech
I love this quote by Maya Angelou that says that people will forget what you said; people will forget what you did but will never forget how you made them feel.
That is to say that if you conclude with some memorable lines, people will never forget how you made them feel. So, have to do your best to end on a strong note.
If you have nothing to say, you can end with this:

First, if you or the couple is rooted in faith, you can end with a prayer or this bible verse.

Second, if you are musically gifted, you can modify the lyrics of this song and wrap up with it.
Third, you can end with a good quote about marriage or love, even if you are not married. Here are some examples to help you end on a strong note.
