And that’s what happened to Elizabeth and Kerry days leading to their big day. It was Elizabeth’s birthday and Kerry decided to go with her to see horses race in a competition.
Kerry’s team won and Elizabeth was so thrilled to see the horses gallop here and there.
So she asked Kerry to help join the local polo club. She wanted to learn how to first ride a horse so she could win the competition in the women’s category someday.
She enrolled and was doing great. Her trainers said she was one of the determined people they had seen. Kerry even bought her her private horse to enable her train harder and better.
An accident occurs!
With just days to their big day, Elizabeth fell off the horse during her training session one afternoon. Unfortunately, she was kicked in the belly by the stallion powerful left hoof.
John, her trainer didn’t mind but rode on. He thought it was just one of those tricks Elizabeth played when she was tired.
After twenty minutes, she was still on the ground so he quickly rushed to the scene and saw her student lying motionless. And blood was oozing from her left thigh. He couldn’t help it so he called an ambulance and she was rushed to hospital.
Kerry, her fiancée was about to call her on the phone so they could go shopping when his own phone rang several times. He rushed to grab the receiver and to his dismay, an unfamiliar voice announced that Elizabeth had fallen into coma.
Kerry informed Elizabeth’s mother and he picked her up on the way to the hospital. When they arrived doctors informed them that she would need to be operated upon if she didn’t recover.
Everybody was down in spirit and they even wanted to put off the wedding. But they had paid for the things they needed and it was just unbearable to raise money; having planned this event for close to 5 years!
But Kerry just believed that this event couldn’t be postponed.
In less than three weeks to time, she showed remarkable signs of recovery and incredible strength and doctors were even stunned!
At this point, her wounds had healed and she was no more hobbling. When the family got to know this they were thrilled!
Preparations for the wedding got place albeit on a slow note.
Seeing what the family had gone through, Elizabeth’s mum told her husband that they needed to make the event memorable. A lot of things came into mind but her husband suggested that she give a speech.
After considering the kind of wedding speech to give, she settled on a funny speech.
On the day itself, this was what she said when she was asked to give her funny mother of the bride speech.
Her speech began
Many years ago, a French husband and wife were travelling through Eastern Europe with the wife’s aged aunt. The old woman had been pains in the butt from the word go, complaining about everything… the food, the hotels, the weather, and the people.
Finally, she went too far and insulted a small nation’s queen. As a result, all three members of the family were sentenced to corporal punishment in the form of fifty lashes.
However, because the nation did not wish to be viewed as hostile to foreign visitors, the queen agreed that each be granted a wish before receiving the punishment.
The wife said that she would like a pillow to be bound to her rear end. And so, the pillows were tied in place and the aunt received her fifty lashes.
Finally, it was the husband‘s turn.
I have two wishes, if that’s possible … he said
That’s acceptable… said the Chief Of Police. ..I am empowered by her royal highness to grant you two wishes. What are your wishes Sir?
Firstly, I would like to be given one hundred lashes instead of the fifty
The Police Chief stood speechless and said Are you sure? That’s an unusual request. Nevertheless, I would grant your wish. And what’s your second wish?
I want my wife’s aunt to be bound to my back.
From that story, we can glean the following lessons

I stand here today a proud mom not because my daughter has found the man of her dreams but because your life has been a great blessing to the family since you were born. I see you are happy and nervous like a Christmas toy but I want to assure you need not worry.
Marriage is a lot like the story I shared at the start of my talk. You need not complain like the aged aunt who went too far and insulted a nation’s queen because you can never have all you need in this life. Learn to content with the little things that come your way because you can only have much when you learn to count your blessings.
She also added the account of the tragedy the family experienced and that brought tears to some people who were in the audience. She even got a standing ovation for her efforts.
Elizabeth’s ordeal and her mom’s triumph brings to mind the power of using words to influence people, and getting them to do whatever we want. The right words can inspire, heal, and even make us laugh when used appropriately.
