I have written several of such entertaining wedding speeches and I can tell you that it doesn’t come easily to everyone, and that is perfectly fine.
Unless, you are a naturally funny mom, it can be a bit hard to come up with a good one. That is not to say only funny moms stand a chance here.
If you have the wit and skills to write a funny script and have also learned a few tips and tricks about transforming everyday experiences into happy moments, then you too will make everyone happy with your words. Remember, with dedication and a willingness to learn, anyone (including you) can master the art of humor and become a skilled comedian in their own right.
That being said, with or without a natural flair for humor, the proven tips and ideas I will be sharing with you in this detailed post will help you to effortlessly write a funny mother of the bride speech that will make you shine like a rock star on the night. Wouldn’t that be an unforgettable feeling?
Ok, please get ready as we go this happy journey together!
Everything that is worthwhile in life requires planning. So, let’s start by looking at how to plan our speech from start to end.
This comes first in the planning process:
How To Get Ideas For Your Humorous Mother Of The Bride Speech
The reason why a lot of moms get stuck in the writing process is because they have no clue what goes into writing a great script. They find a few funny mother of the bride speech examples online and simple tweak them for their needs.
It comes as no surprise that most speeches are filled lack original humor ideas. They are often a regurgitation of clichés and those same lines we find on the internet and in other books.
To get ideas for your speech, you can simply follow one or more of the five techniques below to come up with ideas that are unique to you and your daughter’s story.
Please note that we will be revisiting and building on some of the tips I will be sharing in a later chapter of this post.
Let’s get into them:
Funny Mother Of The Bride Videos
To start with, you can get ideas, guidance and inspiration from watching funny mother of the bride speech videos on YouTube. I always do that if I need some bout of inspiration and I recommend that you do that. Well, here are three reasons why you need to watch them before you put your notes together.
First, you can pick up phrases and jokes and storytelling techniques you can incorporate into your own speech.
Second, you will find out how other moms balance humor with heartfelt sentiments to engage the wedding audience.
Third, you will discover how humor can be used to break the ice, connect with the audience, and make your speech more relatable, memorable, and enjoyable.
Here, by the way, is a hilarious clip you can watch and learn from.
How About Wedding Jokes?
In addition to the above example, you can get ideas from wedding jokes. You can use inside or family jokes, love and marriage jokes, self-deprecating jokes, and one-liner jokes.
Here’s a very short example:
I am so happy to welcome Mike into our crazy family. He’s blended in seamlessly, mostly because he’s now a card-carrying foodie like my girl. We have successfully trained him to eat at any hour of the day and the results are just obvious. I mean, it only took a few weeks for him to develop that big belly. We are so proud of him!
Let me add that any kind of joke you decide to use should resonate with the entire audience (like the last example) and not just your family and friends.
That being said, you should avoid jokes that could offend or embarrass the happy couple or any of the guests. If you are not too sure about any joke, just discard it and just go for funny anecdotes.
You Can Share Funny Stories About The Bride
Wedding jokes are not the only thing you can use you can also get great ideas from funny stories.
If you don’t have a great memory, just talk to her dad, siblings, aunts and uncles and their conversations will help you spark fun and fond memories you can slot into your speech.
You may also flip through that old family photo album and those funny stories will come back to mind easily. The trick is to write down as many stories you can remember and pick out what you would like to use for your mother of the bride speech.
Funny Quotes Can Also Help
You may come up with yours, borrow quotes from others or simply use one-liners.
Here are a few examples that can help embellish your wedding toast for your daughter and new son-in-law.
The best way to get most husbands to do something is to suggest that perhaps they're too old to do it." —Anne Bancroft
Marry a man your own age; as your beauty fades, so will his eyesight.” —Phyllis Diller
“By all means marry; if you get a good wife, you’ll become happy; if you get a bad one, you’ll become a philosopher.”

Funny Mother Of The Bride Speech Examples Are A Great Help Too
I want us to first look at this short example. Afterwards, we will break it down and see how we can use it to write your script.
Here it is:
You know, as our small family grew, John and I decided to move into a bigger apartment, we thought we’d finally have enough space for our growing family. We loved the place. It was not only roomy but clean and beautiful with all the great facilities you would expect in a decent accommodation.
We loved hanging out in the kitchen, snacking to bananas which by the way, contributed to John’s infamous bot pelly.
Anyway, a few months after we moved in, I started noticing that our bananas were getting gnawed on. I was like, ‘’ What’s going on here? ‘’ And then Sandra comes to me and says, ‘’ Mom, I saw a rat in the kitchen!’’ I couldn’t believe it. I mean our place was spotless and there was no way a rat could hide in there.
So, we de-cluttered the entire kitchen to try and catch the culprit. But a week later, Sandra comes running to me again saying she saw the rat. This time, I was like, ‘’okay let’s get to the bottom of this. ‘’
A few days after that, John and I heard a weird noise coming from the kitchen. I was a bit freaked out so I asked John to go check it out. He tiptoed and peeked through the kitchen door to find Sandra sitting on the shelf and munching on bananas like they were going out of style.
John slowly opened the door and said, ‘’I hope you are having a great day, Miss. Rat. Sandra was so startled. She looked like she’d seen a ghost!
With her mouth full of bananas, she says, ‘’ Dad, I know you love bananas but you wouldn’t let me have more than I need.
Needless to say that was the last time we ever heard of rats or saw that ‘’human-rat’’ in a nice wedding dress.
From then on, I made sure there was enough bananas for her and everyone in the family.
Sandra, you are a joy to be around and I couldn’t be happier that you have found the love of your life and your perfect match in Steve.
Steve loves you to the moon and back and I am confident that he will love and protective you in good times and bad.
Steve and Sandra, the greatest joy in life to share your love with someone you can’t live without. Your love for each other is a special gift and you have to nurture and cherish.
We love you both and I wish you a long and happy marriage. God bless you both.
Did you like it? I think it’s a heartfelt and funny toast on many levels.
Having looked at those five easy steps to finding ideas for your funny wedding speech for your daughter, this raises a natural follow-up question:
How Do You Write A Funny Mother Of The Bride Speech?
You should start by first creating an outline for your toast. A well-structure framework will help you to organize your thoughts and also give you proven framework you can build and develop your ideas on.
Take this simple outline I carved from that mother of the groom speech example we read earlier.
- Welcome everyone(family, friends, the wedding guests) with a smile
- Thank the guests for coming
- Let them who you are
- Start your speech with captivating opener
- Talk about the bride
- Make brief remarks about the groom
- End Your Speech On A Memorable Note
Now, let’s get to work by looking at how each bullet point works with the right examples.
- Welcome Everyone With A Smile
The sole purpose of your toast is to make everyone laugh. So, why not start by warmly welcoming everyone to the wedding reception with a bright and contagious smile.
It could even take it up a notch and flash a ridiculously quirky smile to get everyone giggling before you even begin your welcome remarks in this manner:
You are welcome to the wedding anniversary of my daughter Shelly and Kevin, my precious son-in-law.
Then, you can gaze in wonder and intentionally utter these words: say….Oh…I am so sorry…Ugh! Did I say wedding anniversary? Oh, I wanted to say wedding reception but you can’t blame me anyway.
They have dated for about 10 years and I have been telling friends and family they were already married. So, I came here thinking I was going to do a wedding anniversary speech? Isn’t something wrong with this very young lady?
Don’t you think the above example would make for a hilarious opening? When well-delivered with the right facial expression and body gestures, it would surely bring the house down and you will receive lots of genuine compliments when you hand the microphone to another speaker or the master of ceremonies.
How about this second playful and lighthearted example?
Welcome, everyone, to the wedding of the year! Or at the very least, the wedding of the month. Possibly, this could be the wedding of the millennium…I don’t care what you think anyway? Mmm…I must say the completion is fierce as my other daughter is getting married next month to his dad in a pretend play right here at this same venue.( pause for laughter)
So, let’s wait and see which one becomes the wedding of the millennium! My bet’s on this one, though. But, her dad thinks otherwise. Really? (pause for laughter)! On a more serious note…
- Thank The Guests For Coming
How about this funny way to express gratitude to your guests for attending? This remark can be used as a follow-up to the above welcome speech.
Ladies and gentlewomen and anyone who is just here for the food(don’t worry…I won’t judge) I would like to expend my heartfelt gratitude to each and every one for gracing this occasion with your presence. I know the real draw was our incredible chef from Turkey.
Before I wrap up, I say thank for your love and support. And oh did I say ladies and gentlewomen. I guess I am just a rebel like that. I thought I was at her bridal shower. Forgive me for that. Thanks again, everyone! Now, let’s get this party started and by party, I mean, let’s eat all the food!
- Let Them Who You Are
After acknowledging the wedding guests, you should mention your name and your relationship with the bride.
Here’s a little example:
For those of you who don’t know me, I am Margaret, the very proud mom of the bride. But, I am affectionately called Miss Cutie Putie.
That wasn’t too engaging, right? What if you could make it a little bit fun? This simple example can give you an idea:
Hello everyone! For those of you who don’t know me, I am Mary, the proud mother of this lovely bride. But my daughter likes to call me ‘’ Mary in High Heels’-and trust me, there’s a fabulous story behind that crazy nickname which I will be sharing soon.
By the way, she has an innocent face like a loaf of fresh bread, but she’s been my partner-in-crime, my first love, and my girlfriend of the last 25 years. Yes, you read that right- 25 years and still going strong! So please sit back, relax, and get ready for some laughter, and love and some mischief!
Did you compare the last example with the previous one? Now, don’t you think the second example will get everyone chuckling and giggling with joy?
- Start Your Funny Mother Of The Bride Speech Anyway
How do you start your funny mother of the bride speech? This is a very important question because how well you start your mother of the bride speech will determine how the rest of your speech will go. So, always start on a resounding.
Well, I would like to share two ways to make it fun from the outset.
- Start with a joke. Make a joke about yourself.
This is how it could be done:
Can you give me a hand? Just start by clapping for me because I am going to make a very surprising statement. Just keep it going please.
Well, I promise this is going to be the shortest ever mother of the bride speech? Well, it will last for just one minute! Why am I competing with anyone or what? Did you believe me when I said that? That would have been possible if she was only a year old but for a 28 year old, that’s another story altogether.
- Second, you can also compare the attributes of the groom and bride (in a funny way) using stuff the audience can relate to. This will surely make your speech super memorable.
Well, let me start my saying that they are an amazing couple. I often like to say that Kevin is like candy and Maggie is like a bar of chocolate.
He is fun to be around, sweet, charming, and a caring person who perfectly complements my daughter’s wonderful, bubbly, and sweet personality. I came here with bars of chocolate and candies to give to you all so you can always remember me for that and look back on this day with a grateful heart.
After your introductory remarks and leading with a great hook, you then go on to…
- Talk About The Bride
What do you want to say about her? Here are a few tips to help you do that easily and quickly.
First, go back to your mental archives and jot down all those funny and special moments you have had together and pick your favorite ideas.
I remember reading a story where a mom of the bride said that her daughter always dreamed of getting married that when she was a very little girl, she used to hold her dad’s hands and pretend they were getting married. Stories like that and what you are thinking of always bring joy and excitement to the wedding guests.
If you can’t remember them, just write many stories you can remember about her and choose your favorite from that pool.
Second, you may talk about a funny and fond memories or share any story that you think will make your family and friends laugh out loud. Just make sure what you share will not embarrass her or anyone at the wedding reception.
Third, you can amplify the bride’s traits, habits or quirks for comedic effect.
Do you need an example? I don’t think I have to do that as you know her more than anyone else. So, brainstorm with her dad and siblings and you get tons of those memories. Ok, I have changed my mind.
So, here’s an example: My daughter is like a pizza. She’s hot, cheesy, and always a crowd pleaser.
This is what you have to do after you shared a few things about the bride.
- Make Brief Remarks About The Groom
Here’s a simple example to help you write yours:
Dan, you have captured Melissa's heart with your thoughtfulness, care, and the effort you put into making her happy every day. You ‘have enriched her life and…
Remember, your speech shouldn’t be all funny. It should be a blend of fun and heartfelt sentiments. So, just write what comes to you naturally when you think about him, what he stands for, and the role he plays in your daughter’s life.
Well, if you can share a funny story about him, then that will make the wedding event even more joyous.
- End Your Speech
How do you want to end it?
First, you may end with a funny song like this one, Just so you know, you can modify the lyrics a bit and use it as a piece of advice for your new son-in-law when talking about him.
Second, you can make it fun by ending with a rhyming mother of the bride speech.
Marriage is precious and to be treasured.
The love that you have can never be measured.
It joins you as one, not just with a ring,
But a future together and what it will bring.
Keep the love alive and make it last.
Remember the good times, don't live in the past.
The bond that you have shows the world that you care,
Not just for yourselves, but for the family you share.

Third, you can simply share a piece of advice or end with a quote:
“My best advice is to compromise, make time for each other, never let the little things get in your way, forgive each other, and always say I love you’’
