Maid Of Honor Speech Example/ Template

I would like to thank hitched.co.uk for posting this on their website.

Liz… I’m so happy to be here today as your maid of honour, and to be able to tell everyone here how perfect Liz and Mike are for each other.

For those of you who don’t know, I’m Michelle, best friend of Liz’s for nearly 20 years. We were in 6th grade when we first met, and bonded because we were both going through our cringy anime phase together (and are still going through). She was obsessed with the anime Gundam Wing and I was a weird, nerdy kid who happened to like it too.

You were by my side on my actual wedding day as my maid of honour, and now I am by yours, finally getting to see you walk down the aisle to the man of your dreams.

I never would have thought that this friendship that started from passing notes in class and doodling anime boys to one another would be my most treasured and long-lived friendship. But it wasn’t hard, since, over time, I learned that Liz is one of the most dedicated and loving people you will ever meet.

When she decides to be loyal to someone, she will put her whole heart into it. I really could go on and on about how wonderful she is, and god knows I have many stories of our shenanigans, from anime and boy drama through middle school and high school, to drunken all-nighters and Anime Expos in college. But when I think about our friendship, I like to recall us sneaking off to the apartment pool one night because summers in Riverside are hot as hell even after sunset.

We dipped our feet in the water and gushed about being at each other’s weddings and even having kids around the same time so our kids could be best friends like us (OR MAYBE MORE…). And here we are now…

You were by my side on my actual wedding day as my maid of honour, and now I am by yours, finally getting to see you walk down the aisle to the man of your dreams. And I know there’s no man more worthy of your love and intense loyalty than Mike.

I watched their relationship bloom, from cute virtual dates in World of Warcraft, to sneaking off to Disneyland during the summer, and I saw that both of them were romantics who genuinely wanted to make it work.

Liz has always had a type – she loves the cool, mysterious, quiet types with good jawlines. In Mike’s case, his cool exterior as they got to know each other in high school was likely him just being socially awkward and shy.

But I watched their relationship bloom, from cute virtual dates in World of Warcraft, to sneaking off to Disneyland during the summer, and I saw that both of them were romantics who genuinely wanted to make it work. And I know you both worked your asses off to make it work.

Maid of honor speech examples

Few people realise how many challenges you two overcame to be together and stay together. You were long distance for half of your relationship – over high school AND college, across the country, from California to Ohio. That’s a huge accomplishment.

People change so much from those ages, become totally different people with different goals. Yet Liz and Mike made it work. They grew together and always, always made an effort to intertwine their lives together.

They never stopped communicating, never stopped dating each other, even when they finally closed the distance. This is a couple that still kiss and hug and look at each other like love-struck teenagers several years later...

As Liz’s roommate, I can tell you she was always on the phone or webcam with him. She’d lovingly craft comics and art of them two to send in care packages to him, and I remember Mike drawing something for her, even though he’s not the drawing type, and running it by me for the sake of reciprocating her love.

And they kept this up for years. They never stopped communicating, never stopped dating each other, even when they finally closed the distance. This is a couple that still kiss and hug and look at each other like love-struck teenagers several years later, yet have the confidence and intimacy of one that’s grown old and wise together.

Liz and Mike, as a couple, you two are exactly where you should be. To the happy couple and their happily ever after!

As someone who has watched their relationship from the very beginning, you two truly embody a piece of advice I once heard about marriage:

“A wedding ceremony should only, ever and always, be an affirmation that the relationship is where the couple wants to be, and a promise to keep it like that.” Liz and Mike, as a couple, you two are exactly where you should be. To the happy couple and their happily ever after!

Well, Let's Dive In! - We're Going To Draft A Beautiful Maid Of Honor Toast

Recall that maid of honor speech sample? It has an introduction, body, and conclusion.  Pretty standard, right? But these three components form the basis for every speech.

So, let’s now focus on how best to write the first part of your maid of honor speech: an introduction

To get a fair idea of how to write the opening remarks, let's revisit that introduction, digest it, and then you'll know what to say.  Also, what not to say, which is equally important.

"Hello all. Your presence here, to cheer on Brooke and Brian, means the world. I'm Faith, if you didn't know. Brooke's little sister. And today, I stand here as her Maid of Honor."

Take a pause here, let that sink in. Then, show your gratitude.

"A special thank you goes out to our parents. Mary, Robert, your love for us is undeniable. Gloria, William, your support for Brian has been immense. All of you, together, made this day possible. The love you've shown, it's a shining beacon. It's the essence of true marriage. From the bottom of my heart, thank you."

Let's break it down, shall we? The first few lines should include two things (Part A):

  • First, who you are and how you're connected to the bride.
  • Second, a warm welcome and expression of appreciation.

Let's say you're the bride's sister. Go ahead and express your gratitude to your parents, grandparents even, especially if they've played a significant role in your upbringing. If you are a friend of the bride, simply thank everyone for coming to the wedding and deliver your speech.

Take a moment to thank her for the honor of being asked to speak. Make sure she knows how deeply honored and excited you are to stand beside her side as her maid of honor. There's magic in expressing your emotions, believe me. The crowd will feel it too.

Let's take a little task to start things off. Grab a pen, a piece of paper. Write down names. Names of the folks you'd like to acknowledge, right at the start. Jot them down in this space.

 1)…………

 2)…………

 3)…………

Believe it or not, there’s actually a second part connected to the introduction. Shall we look at it?

Ok…here you go: I picked up those lines from the maid of honor speech above.

''Brooke, as a big sister, you were incredible. Growing up, I didn’t fully grasp the extent of your love and support.''

Guess what? It's the preface to your speech's body, the hook if you will. Here's how you can make your speech captivating from the get-go with a ‘’killer’’ hook.

First, start off with a compliment, simple and sweet. Look at this example:

Anita, you radiate beauty tonight, sitting next to your charming prince.

Next, got a good singing voice like this maid of honor? Use it. Serenade the audience with your opening lines. Entertain the guests with a popular tune. One they can hum, sway or even dance along to. Make it an unforgettable moment. Trust me, they'll love it! Here's an example:

Next, open with a quote. A quote about love, marriage or friendship. Here are a few heart-warming ones to kick start your speech:

  • Moulin Rouge said, “The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return.”
  • Jean Dan said, “Every woman deserves happiness. Yet, she becomes her true self when she finds the one who completes her joy.”
  • Jean Dan also said, “A good man is the best gift God can give a good woman from His treasure chest.”
  • Here's another from Jean Dan, “True love remains elusive until you meet the one your heart and soul yearn for.”
  • Megan said “I never knew what love was until I met you, and when distance separated us, I discovered what true love meant."

Now, let's ask ourselves. Can you transform any of these quotes into an enchanting intro? Let's try this exercise together.

"I discovered the true meaning of love when I met my best friend two decades ago."

Feel the warmth in that? It pulls at your heartstrings, doesn't it? Noticed how seamlessly I incorporated the quote, "'I never knew what love was until I met you. When distance pulled us apart, I discovered what true love is'"? The result is touching and genuine. That's the power of a well-placed quote.

Another tactic? Play with words. Make your speech humorous. Something like this:

"Good afternoon, all. I'm 'berry' happy…(pause and laugh) Maybe it's because I had berries for breakfast? It warms my heart seeing so many of you traveled from afar to be here. It means the world."

Maid of honor speech for friend

(Note: switch 'very' with 'berry' to engage the audience)... (pause, wait for chuckles, then add)...

Better still, you may start with a rhyming poem like this one:

These I Can Promise - Mark Twain

I cannot promise you a life of sunshine;
I cannot promise riches, wealth, or gold;
I cannot promise you an easy pathway
That leads away from change or growing old.
But I can promise all my heart’s devotion;
A smile to chase away your tears of sorrow;

A love that’s ever true and ever growing;
A hand to hold in yours through each tomorrow.

Now, a question for you. Which technique resonates with you for the second part of your introduction? Pick one. Scribble down some thoughts and see what happens.

Next up, let's learn...

How to Write The Body of Your Maid of Honor Speech Using This Example

Let's take inspiration from the example above. The path to guide us, so to speak.

"Almost every childhood memory of mine involves you, all the more wonderful because of you. Remember our all-day 'Olden Days' games?"

Faith discussed memories. And that's precisely what your maid of honor speech should be.

How to gather those memories? It's easy. Get your notepad, pen, and answer these questions:

  • When and where did you first meet the bride? If you're her sister, talk about her birth. If you are not her sister, you can just mention how and when you first met and became friends.
  • How did your bond grow? Share childhood memories if she's your sister. Stick to the good ones. No embarrassing tales, unless they're humorously spun.
  • What shared interests do you have? Travelling? Shopping? Sports? Reading? Just write them down and embellish it with a good story if you can
  • What funny and sweet memories do you have of the bride?
  • Mention the groom too. If you don't know him well, tell him he's lucky to have married your friend or sister and share with him a few tips for making her happy.

Here's what I suggest: Answer the questions above, use those to create an outline or bullet points. Then, pen a first draft. Edit and polish it until the content and style sing in harmony. If your storyline is too long, just go with what you would like to share with your family and friends.

Alright, now we come into the last part...

Wrapping Up Your Maid of Honor Speech Unforgettably!

The grand finale of your toast should leave an imprint like the words of a sacred book. You want the memory of your words to linger. To achieve that, here are some foolproof strategies:

  • Are you married? Share a golden nugget about what keeps a marriage thriving.
  • Share encouraging words or wishes for the newlyweds. Simple yet heartfelt. Can you write one? Not too hard to jot one down, right?
  • How about ending with a love quote from a movie? Here are some contenders:

From "Angels in the Outfield" (1994), "Love is that can't-eat, can't-sleep, reach-for-the-stars, over-the-fence, World Series kind of stuff."

  • If the couple met online, borrow this from "Her" (2013), "The heart's not like a box that gets filled up. It expands in size the more you love."
  • Or, the tongue-in-cheek quote from "Knocked Up" (2007), “Marriage is like a tense, unfunny, version of Everybody Loves Raymond, only it doesn’t last 22 minutes. It lasts forever."
  • Or, a touching poem could be just the thing. Poetry has a way of expressing feelings like nothing else.
  • If you or the couple holds Christian beliefs, ending your speech with a Bible verse or scriptures could add a special touch.

I'm drawn to using Psalm 128 as my wrap-up. It's such a heartwarming scripture!

Psalm 128 from the New International Version reads like a song rising to the heavens:

I would like to use Psalm 128 to wrap up….it’s such a beautiful bible quote!

Psalm 128(New International Version)

A song of ascents.

1 Blessed are all who fear the Lord,

who walk in obedience to him.

2 You will eat the fruit of your labor;

blessings and prosperity will be yours.

3 Your wife will be like a fruitful vine

within your house;

your children will be like olive shoots

around your table.

4 Yes, this will be the blessing

   for the man who fears the Lord.

5 May the Lord bless you from Zion;

may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem

all the days of your life.

6 May you live to see your children’s children— peace be on Israel.

These are all great choices. But remember, it's about what resonates with you, what you feel will best encapsulate your sentiments, and importantly, what you believe will be a meaningful note to end on for the bride, groom, and the audience.

Your maid of honor speech is your gift to them, so make it as unique and special as they are.
