Best Man Speech Examples And Templates For Your Friend Or Brother

Use These Excellent Best Man Speech Examples To Write A Funny Wedding Speech For Your Brother or Friend

If you have ever been asked to write a best man speech for your friend or brother on their wedding day, then you can be sure to have some sleepless nights whether you have a flair with words or not.

Best man speech example for my brother

You see, just about anyone can write anything and proclaim from the roof top that their best man speech is all set: which is why you hear several boring best men speeches at most wedding receptions, rehearsal dinner or bachelor’s party.

To write a best man speech that is very special, unique and comes from the heart, you have to figure what goes into writing a memorable best man speech for your brother or friend.

I know the question on your mind is, how do you go from staring at the blank sheet of paper into organizing your thoughts and ideas into an amazing best man speech.

M4 (1)

It’s actually simple, you know. This stuff goes into writing a great best man speech:

  • Prepping yourself mentally
  • Identifying the two kinds of best man speech examples/templates
  • Studying best man speech examples/templates
  • Making the most out of best man speech examples/templates
  • Writing your best man speech using the knowledge gleaned from studying best man speech examples/samples

Let’s start with the first idea:

Prepping Yourself Mentally To Write Your Best Man Wedding Speech

If you have never made a best man speech before, you will certainly feel nervous because of what you’ve heard others say about speaking in public. Well, nervousness isn’t a sign of weakness and that shouldn’t stop from doing your best.

Instead, you can channel your fears into confidence by believing in yourself and focusing on the task ahead no matter how you are feeling right now.

Holding this positive mental image in your mind for a while will inspire and even embolden you to speak with poise and clarity.

That being said, you can calm your nerves by writing and practicing your best man speech until the wedding is over.

To do this, you have to do this next:

Look For Best Man Speech Examples/Templates

There are two kinds. Visual or video best man speech examples and written examples. Best man speech video examples are visual resources that give an idea of what to add and what not to add to your best man speech for your friend or brother.

There are so many examples you can find online, but I found these great examples for you. Just watch both video clips and make some notes if you can.

Here you go:

Let’s look at the next bullet point:

  • Studying best man speech examples/examples

After you have watched a few video clips, you then go on to study a few well-written best man speech examples/samples. Of course, there are so many examples you can find online. But here are some exceptional ones you can study, learn from, and model your best man wedding speech after.

I want this part of the write-up to be as interactive as possible. So, let me tell you what I am thinking about right now. I am going to share two examples on this page. For the first one, we will break it down and analyze it so you can figure out what goes into writing a great best man speech.

The second example will comprise hints and on the spot assignments to get your speech written fast. Is that okay with you?

Ok…thanks…Let’s get started right away by analyzing the first example!

Thoughout both speeches are my comments and writing tips and ideasyou can plug into your own script. The second example is basically designed to help you brainstorm ideas for the content of your presentation.

Here you go:

Best Man Speech Example/Template#1

First and foremost, I would like to thank hitched.co.uk for posting this on their website.

Good afternoon ladies and gentleman, before I actually begin my speech can I ask The Bride to place her right hand on the table, and Groom can you place your fat fingered, sweaty palm on top of the Brides. Don't worry I'm not going to ask you to sing a duet, knowing that you've both got voices like strangled cats.

Excellent

Can I just ask you all to stand up for me for a moment……………………..

[Ask 50% of the audience to raise their hands over there heads with the hands apart. The other 50% to raise their hands over the heads with their hands together]

Best man speech example for my friend

TAKE COUPLE OF PICS

Cool, doesn't matter now what I say because I now have proof I got a standing ovation.

(Here are my comments/writing ideas you can plug into your own best man speech):

Well, as is the case with best man speeches, Andrew begins by greeting the audience:  ‘’Good afternoon ladies and gentleman’’

In all cases, you have to start your speech by greeting the audience, most of whom have come from far and near to be at your friend’s or brother’s wedding.

So to get your ideas off the ground, please write down a short greeting by getting to know about the audience.

For example, if the bride’s family is travelling from a non-English speaking country, you can learn a few phrases about how to greet the wedding guests in their language and you will get some really good feedback.

This is where it gets exciting: See this excerpt:

''before I actually begin my speech can I ask The Bride to place her right hand on the table, and Groom can you place your fat fingered, sweaty palm on top of the Brides. ''

(Here are my comments/Ideas you can use for your speech) After you’ve saluted your audience, you have to dive right into your speech as you’ve seen in the example above.

Here are some ways to inject fun and excitement into the opening remarks of your best man speech.

First, you can start with a joke. Here's an example you can weave into the content of your best man wedding speech.

''Good afternoon ladies and gentleman, before I actually begin my speech can I ask The Bride to place her right hand on the table, and Groom can you place your fat fingered, sweaty palm on top of the Brides.

Cool, doesn't matter now what I say because I now have proof I got a standing ovation.''

Second, you can generate some incredible excitement by singing a nice song about the groom and the bride. You can write your own lyrics from a popular song. I really admire the energy of this best man.  You can probably adapt his style.

Let’s get back to the speech.

‘’In case some of you don't already know me I'm Andrew, Stacey's best man. ‘’

(Here are my comments/ideas to help you write your best man speech for brother or friend):

Do you remember what I told you about introducing yourself before you speak? Just look at the above underlined words and see it for yourself.

He takes it to another level by making it funnier. Did you notice how he mentioned his nicknames?

To make your best man wedding speech humorous, you can slot in your own nicknames.

Wait a minute. Does the groom have some cool nicknames too? If so, include it by all means.

Here’s an example.

Good evening everyone. For those of you who don’t know me, I am Mike. I am the proud friend of Dan aka Mr. Tomato Paste…..Sorry if you almost fell off your chair when I mentioned his nickname. In the course of the speech, I will let you know why the man of the moment is nicknamed Tomato Paste.

Let’s get back to the speech.

Commonly known by the Bride as Biatch, trollop, local bike and a few other course names which I probably will be arrested for if I repeat them here today.  However, I can actually forgive all those names if she returns my Barbecue and chairs which she borrowed 6 months ago (just a gentle reminder there again sarah).  I'm also compiling a Search warrant so if any of you have any missing items that these 2 have borrowed I'm happy to add them to the list.

You can both lower your arms now and sit down, I just wanted Stacey to have the upper hand over you for the first and last time in your marriage!

So, where shall we start, well firstly I'd like to say a huge thank you for attending the best mans party, and can I say a special thank you to Sarah and Stacey for making such an effort and getting dressed up for the occasion!!!  Although I didn't actually know that Primark did Dress Hire.  But you have to agree that she looks absolutely stunning so can we all raise a glass to Primark……..

M5

(Here are my comments/writing ideas you can slot into your speech): A huge part of your best man speech comprises thanking some personalities and individuals who have played an influential in the lives of the groom and bride.

Now, if we scroll down the page, you will find several words of gratitude to the bridesmaids, etc.

Now, this is what I want you to do. Write down names of people you’d like to add to your wedding speech. You can include figures like the groom’s mom and dad if you are his brother.

You can also express gratitude to the groomsmen, the bridesmaid, maid of honor, your co-best man, etc.

This is my homework assignment for you: Please write down names of individuals you’d like to thank and mention why you are thanking them

Let’s get back to the speech.

No seriously Sarah you look a million dollars in that beautiful dress and I know that Stacey thinks so too as he told me earlier that you will blend really well with the rest of the kitchen.

To Sarah (raise glass)

Best man speech samples

And to the bridesmaids, who look amazing and have done an excellent job in making this day special for Sarah.

Toast To the Bridesmaids

I have to say it wasn't that much of a shock that I was asked by Stacey to be his best man considering that Sarah made 100 or so annoying calls and text messages to me asking “has he asked you yet, as he asked you yet, honestly he's gonna ask you, and the ultimate “Andrew, Stacey loves you, has he asked you yet” and then “god he's bloody useless”.

So eventually the day came when Stacey plucked up the courage and asked me to be his best man…………………..by “Text Message”…………..2 days ago!!!!

(Here are my comments/ideas to help you write your best man speech): As seen above, you can share how you felt when your friend or brother asked you to be his best man if it has a funny twist to it.

The next lines dwell on the groom’s relationship with the best man. We will delve into it in due time.

Back to the speech.

Anyway, I've known Stacey for about 5 years or so and it really is a pleasure to stand here and call him my “Mate”.  Mates will do anything to help you out and Stacey is no exception. For example Anybody who knows me will know that DIY is just not one of my fortes and I seemed to have a problem with ..… lets just say….a leakage.  No problem, Stacey being Stacey jumps up and sets to work to sort out my plumbing!!!  You see, mates mates mates.

He's also a guy of very few words.  I always try to make time through the day to contact mates so I usually email Stacey, you know like you do and ask him how he is and how work is and tell him what kind of a day I'm having, usually crap of course.  And what reply do I get from him…………….”yeah”

His work colleagues from what I have also found out describe him as being godlike.  When asked to qualify this they said – they never see you, you make your own rules if you do any work, it's a bloody miracle.

Now I understand that most of you here will know Stacey quite well and most of you will also know Sarah quite well, but I thought this would be an ideal opportunity for us all to get to know them a little bit better as a couple.

(Here are my comments/take home points for writing your script): From these lines: ‘’ Anyway, I've known Stacey for about 5 years or so and it really is a pleasure to stand here and call him my “Mate”.  Mates will do anything to help you out and Stacey is no exception…to little bit better as a couple’’ we come to appreciate the relationship between the groom and the bride.

That’s actually the content of the whole thing. Wondering you can get your ideas flowing when writing about the bonds of friendship with the groom?

Here are some pointers with examples culled from this speech and elsewhere.

  • Write down when and how you first got to know the groom

Here’s an example:

‘’Anyway, I've known Stacey for about 5 years or so and it really is a pleasure to stand here….’’

  • Briefly write about how you became his best friend/brother.
  • You may write about your shared interests. For example, if you belong to the same tennis club, you can humorously share how he always outplays you when you are at it.
  • Share how he’s a source of pride and inspiration to you and other close pals
  • If there are some guarded secrets the bride doesn’t know about, you can share a few inoffensive ones and you will get some good laughs.

This is your writing assignment/homework: Jot down answers to the five questions and use your responses to come up with the body or content of your wedding speech.

Ok…Let’s get back to the speech.

For this I have derived a short game of  Mr & Mrs for the newly weds to participate in, so if I could ask the Bride & Groom to stand together back to back – just to avoid seeing each others answers.

Right, all you have to do is simply answer a few simple questions by raising these cards

So try to keep your answers as honest as possible, there will be a prize if you manage to match all of each others answers, which is an open bar for you both for the rest of the night and this has been very kindly donated by Alcoholics Anonymous.

  • Test (if required) – Who's the tallest?

Right then, here goes, a nice easy one to start with:

  1. When you're on a night out and you both hit the dance floor, who has got the best dance moves?
  2. Which of you would be most likely to forget your anniversary?
  3. Which one of you is likely to go on holiday and leave a personal item at home only to find that a picture of it has been posted on facebook when you return.
  4. Which of you would you say is the most romantic?

And finally, a bit of a tricky one.

  1. On your holiday in August last year in Zante, who, after a few glasses of champagne, decided to go skinny dipping in the hotel's indoor pool? And when being caught by hotel staff, then ran naked through the hotel back to your room?

M6 (1)

Can you all please give a big hand to the Bride and Groom for being so sporting.

(Again, here are my comments/writing ideas you can weave into your message): I think that game can be played on the wedding day with some slight modifications.

What do you think? You can probably change a few things here and there to suit the bride and groom and your speech will really go down well.  You have to give it a try if you really want your best man wedding speech to stand out from the pack.

We are not done yet. Let’s look at how to craft your closing remarks.

Let’s get back to the speech. Whilst I still have your attention The Bride and Groom have asked me to read a few cards out

[READ COUPLE OF CARDS]

There's also a couple of telegrams which arrived at the hotel reception this morning.

To Stace we could have been so good together I will miss our nights by the pool – lots of love, Michael Barrymore.

Dear Stacey, congratulations on getting married, and also on winning our big spender of the month award! Lots of love from the dancers at Blue Leopard Pole Dancing Club in Leeds.

I'm pleased to say my speech is over now, once again its been an honour to be your best man. I hope you both are fully enjoying your day as much as everyone in this room is.

So Ladies and Gentlemen, I would like you all stand for a toast to our newly wed bride and groom Mr & Mrs Dickinson, wishing them all the happiness in the future..

(Here are my comments/writing ideas): It’s the norm for most folks to close with one or more of these well-worn techniques:

  1. Words of congratulation or best wishes
  2. A simple toast

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with both closing styles. But, did you know you can your conclusion very impactful, heartfelt and unique?

Here’s how:

  • You can involve the wedding guests by asking a one or a few simple questions about the bride and groom. It should be based on your presentation. Then, you give a few gifts to those who had the right answers. I have never seen this done anywhere. So, what are you waiting for? Just do and people would applaud you for your ingenuity.
  • You can surprise them with a beautiful gift as well.
  • You can end with a beautiful quote. These are my all time-favorites drawn from the movies:

The best love is the kind that awakens the soul and makes us reach for more, that plants a fire in our hearts and brings peace to our minds.
The Notebook

You have bewitched me, body and soul, and I love, I love, I love you. I never wish to be parted from you from this day on.
Pride and Prejudice

I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.
When Harry Met Sally

You are the most important thing to me now. The most important thing to me ever.
Twilight

Let’s get back to the speech.

[TOAST]

Unfortunately as is usually the case with Sarah, a male NEVER has the final word and I understand that the tablets that shes taking for her tourettes problem have finally kicked in.  So I will leave you with a few words from Sarah.

(Here are my comments/writing ideas) : We’ve come to the end of the road so to speak.  But, I have good news for you because it’s fun time! We are going to have some fun flexing our writing muscles. So, grab your notepad and pen and relax as we do these brain stimulation exercises together.

Best Man Speech Sample/Example#2

Please note: Interspered throughout this second sample are few ideas and plenty of assignments to help you brainstorm. So, please grab your pen and notepad as we do this together.

Hi everyone,

For those of you that don't know I'm Andy. John was actually best man at my wedding just 6 months ago. At the time we did make a deal that if we we're both good at it then we could do it for each other next time as well so I hope this is good enough!

(Question to help you come up with some ideas:) Do you remember how I showed you to write your introductory remarks? The underlined phrases’’For those of you that don't know I'm Andy’’ should give you an idea. So, please write a short one. I hope you can? Don’t belittle yourself because you can! Just go ahead and do it right now.

back to the speech.

I actually think that the main reason John picked me was so that when he was stood up at the front here he would have someone stood next to him to make him look taller and thinner! I'm glad I could help!

I thought it would be appropriate if I started the speech like this…

Ladies and Gentlemen, I would like to welcome you on board the wedding of John and Jane. I am Andy and I'll be your bestman for this speech. On behalf of both John and Jane I would like to welcome you to this special day for final leg of the journey from boyfriend and girlfriend to husband and wife.

This speech will be lasting approximately 5 minutes and, with any luck, be including many laughs and stories along the way.

Please be aware that, should the need arise, your nearest exits are here, here and here.

At this time can I ask that you have a full drink in hand and your seats are upright, mobile phones are switched off and that you are sat comfortable as, for one of us, this could be a bit of a bumpy ride!

I would like to start by saying on behalf of the bride and groom, thank you all for your coming today in celebration of their marriage. Jane, your dress is amazing and you are looking exceptional today, and John, well, he's here!

(Comments to help you come up with ideas for your speech): Please look over the above bolded words carefully and tell me what you can find. If you mentioned that it’s expression of gratitude to the friends and family of the bride and groom for attending the wedding, then you deserve a pat on the back! Congratulations!

M4 (1)

Can you take it a step further by writing yours? You can do it! Take action now! I believe in you! Just make a few changes to it and presto, you are good to go!

I'd also like to say what a wonderful job the bridesmaids have done and how amazing they look as well, so here's a toast to say thank you…

(Comments to help you write well):Of course, the bridesmaids have done amazingly well and need to be thanked. But, who else is on your thank you list? Remember what I said earlier about thanking the groom for choosing you to be his best man?

How about the groomsmen? I am thinking about thanking the bride for agreeing to marry your friend or brother? Who else comes to mind? I need you to think about these deeply. Then, write their names and attach a few words of gratitude to each name. I rest my case here.

TOAST <the Bridesmaids>

I'm lucky enough to have known both John and Jane for many years since our sixth form days at Stretford Grammar.

(Questions to help you brainstorm): There’s a hidden idea here….Hint: Write down the number of years you’ve known the groom and may be the bride. So, you can start this way(as seen above) and go on from there.

Let’s get back to the speech.

Like my wife and I, they are a product of the Stretford Grammar common room and John often tells me that, going off the way things seem to work he and Jane seem to be working to a similar schedule to us.

How to write your best man speech

Around 6 months after we got together, John and Jane got together, literally 6 months ago we got married and here we are today with John and Jane getting married. So by my calculations with our baby due in February that means around August next year there might be some good news?

I actually still remember the first time I feel I really got to know John; well I remember parts of it! We'd been out in Manchester and had a few drinks but weren't really enjoying the evening. Luckily, Dave had a free house and, in his words ‘some drink’ that we could have.

This sounded like a great idea and so, kebab in hand, the 3 of us headed back to Daves. Sadly I can't tell you much more about that night as we managed to polish off the drink that was promised – and Baby Cham really goes down easily! – and the next thing I remember was Steve snoring downstairs, no one remembering how or when he arrived, and me waking up next to John in bed. He was smiling though so what ever happened must have been fun!

Hints to help you jot down your ideas: Just write down where and how you met the groom and how your friendship evolved from there. You may throw in a story or two.  Don’t be shy to pick some great ideas from here since the storyline is quite dramatic.

Let’s get back to the speech.

Everyone will know John is a quiet and sensible person. In fact I think it's fair to say John's that sensible that he won't play on Fifa on the PlayStation in case he gets injured! Luckily we managed to get him into net for our 5-a-side team, the Stretford Old Boys. I have to say that he was a cracking keeper and probably kept us in the division we were in single handedly, and every so often he used his other hand and his feet and on more than one occasion his face!

Well that and the fact that we were in the bottom league so couldn't go any lower! I also think he does hold some records for the team as well. Most ‘Man of the Match’ awards, Most visits to A&E after the game award and also the record as being the only one of us to never score during a game…well…in the oppositions net!

Away from the football you can safely assume that if neither John nor Jane are working then they will be either at the cinema watching the latest films or tucking into a Nandos chicken, even back when Jane was a vegetarian!

Quite often we'll go as a group and I remember when having a conversation with them at Nandos and completely misunderstanding what they meant by wanting to spice things up! I was thinking about buying them a book on the Karma Sutra, they were thinking of going for a hot marinade instead of lemon and herb!

Question time: In the first example, we talked about mentioning the groom’s shared interests. If the couple has similar taste in fashion, music, sports, it makes it much more interesting. So write down what excites the groom the most and pair it with those of the bride and weave in an interesting story and the couple will appreciate your efforts.

Here’s an example to get you thinking:

Renee, you are a beautiful addition to our circle
of friends, and I am so happy to see the two of
you getting married today. It also helps that you
are also a fan of the Lakers and of course,
Prince!

I still would have been happy for Cesar
if he’d met a girl who did not like Purple Rain,
but I am certainly much more pleased with the
fact that he did!

Let’s get back to the speech.

As a couple I'm sure everyone can see that they are perfect for each.

Can I ask our bride and groom to stand holding an arm out and can John put his hand on top of Jane's for a few moments.

It was a great privilege being asked to be your best man and I hope I haven't let you down. John is my best friend and I'm sure he will make a great Husband and I'm even more sure they will be extremely happy for many a year to come.

Comments: I think it will be a great ideas to slot in the highlighted words into your best man speech. What do you think?

Let’s get back to the speech.

You can both lower your arms now and sit down; I just wanted John to have the upper hand over you for the first and last time in your marriage!

And so:

Ladies and Gentlemen welcome to the end of my speech. The local time is <check time> and the weather is <check weather>, however for these 2 the outlook is bright.

For your safety can I ask you remain clapping until I am seated as this will indicate the end of the speech?

Could you check your table for your drink but be aware that it may have moved around in all the laughter.

Comments: You may try modeling part of your best man speech for bride and groom after the bolded extract?

I would like to thank you for choosing to listen and finally could I ask you to raise your glasses.

To Mr and Mrs Jones

Ok…my friend, I think you can do this well….Well, if you are still nervous, then I have a good news for you.

Best Man Speech For Brother Or Friend: Proven Tips And Ideas To Help You Write A Great Best Man Wedding Speech For Your Brother Or Friend Even If You Are Very Nervous

Making an amazing best man speech for your brother or friend is something every best man should aspire to do when they are asked to deliver a few remarks on the wedding day.

However, not many best men get it right. Well, have you ever wondered why some exceptional best man speeches go viral while so many others sink into oblivion as soon as the speaker goes back to their seats?

Short best man speech

That’s not because the very eloquent speakers are great with words nor have magnetic personalities.

While those natural abilities help to an extent, a lot is involved when it comes to writing and delivering a heartfelt best man speech for your brother or friend.

To do justice to your speech, you need to get a mental picture of what you want to achieve and stick to that plan from start till the end.  Here’s what I recommend you do if you want to get it right.

M4 (1)

Guess what? You just have to follow this simple process and steps:

  • Having a positive mindset
  • Creating an environment for the expression of your ideas
  • Scripting your ideas and tie together the loose ends
  • Practicing your best man speech

Let’s look at each idea in detail. Shall we go on?

  • Develop a positive mindset

Let’s start with one problem all best men face and how to overcome it. Guess what the problem is? Nerves!Whenever you imagine speaking before the wedding crowd, your heart will miss several beats and you will be wondering if you have the guts to do that.

If you have never made a best man speech before, that feeling might leave you paralyze and you might even wonder if you can really make your friend or brother proud with your wedding speech?

Believe it or not, you can do it! You see, whenever you have to deliver any speech, your mind will bring back unpleasant feelings of when you did a terrible job talking to a small crowd.  But you should put the past behind if you really want your best man speech to be a hit.

This, in essence, is the first step to taking control of the situation even before you deliver your best man toast.

Now, let’s look at the next idea:

Before you sit to write your speech, you need to create the right environment to help you put your ideas together.

If you don’t know where to start or how to get good ideas for the content of your best man speech, it can be quite daunting.

But, there’s hope. The easy way out is to watch a few best man speech video clips to get a fair idea of how such toasts are made.

There are so many clips on YouTube but I managed to get these really good ones for you! I recommend watching them several times so you can figure how it was scripted before you give yours a try.

Here you go:

Here they are:

Best Man Speech Friend Example/Template #1

Hello everyone. I’m Jason, and I’m cast today as “Best Man #2” which is a great honor and privilege for me. As many of you may know, I have known Jimmy for a long time. In fact, I first met him when he was just a kid, as I was his teacher. Little did I know that one day, that kid would become one of my closest friends.

Jimmy has always been an incredible athlete, and it was no surprise to me when he came back to work as an assistant coach after college. We have been coaching together ever since, and I have seen him grow as a coach and as a person. We also get to chaperone a group of 8th graders to New York and Washington DC every year. And he can tell you, when you look at these kids, you aren’t thinking “one of these kids is going to be my best friend someday.” Believe me!

But what can I say, from the moment I met him, Jimmy has been one of the most genuine and authentic people I have ever met. He has always been true to himself, and that is what I admire most about him. He sets goals and works tirelessly to achieve them, whether it is in coaching, college, or his career.

But Jimmy's journey would not be complete without Mary, who is one of the final pieces of his life’s puzzle. Mary, you are a beautiful and remarkable woman who has captured the heart of our dear friend. You complement each other in every way, and your love for one another is evident in everything you do.

Jimmy is one of the most loyal and dedicated people I know, whether it is with his family, friends, or soon-to-be wife. He has been in my life since my children were born and has been one of their biggest supporters at athletic games over the years.

I can't wait to return the favor and be in the stands, cheering on his children one day. And if they aren’t athletes, that’s ok. I’ll be cheering them on in the auditorium as they win for their debate team, or star in the musical, or whatever.

Jimmy, my friend, I am honored to stand here today as your best man. You are an incredible person, and I am so grateful for our friendship. Mary, you are a beautiful addition to our circle of friends, and I am so happy to see the two of you getting married today.

M5

It also helps that you are also a fan of the Lakers and of course, Prince! I still would have been happy for Jimmy if he’d met a girl who did not like Purple Rain, but I am certainly much more pleased with the fact that he did!

Please remember to always laugh together, never be afraid to cry together, and always stand together against the world. Hand-in-hand the two of you can do absolutely anything. So I say pick “happily ever after” all right?

Ladies and gentlemen, let us raise our glasses to Jimmy and Mary, wishing them a lifetime of love, happiness, and success. Cheers!

Now, here’s the next sample:

Best Man Speech Friend Example/Template #2

I’d like to thank hitched for having this example on their site.

Good Afternoon everyone and thank you for coming to this special occasion, it's lovely to see so many friends and family here today. I'm sure you will all agree it's been a fantastic day so far, yet every silver lining does have a cloud, and that is, unfortunately that you've now all got to listen to me ramble on for a while…

I did hear there was a sweepstake running on how long this speech was going to be and just so you know, I managed to get 200/1 on an hour and 12 minutes, so I hope you've all been to the toilet, filled your glasses and are all sitting comfortably.

Firstly I'd like to start by saying what a wonderful job the bridesmaids have done today and how fantastic they all look.

They are of course only outshone by Sally, who I think you'll all agree looks absolutely stunning.

I would also like to thank the ushers, for at least turning up relatively sober.  Good job though boys, I'm sure everyone here would have all struggled to find their seats, without the help of the five of you!

So for those that don't know me I'm Dave and I've known Andy since we were toddlers…My main aim today is not to embarrass or humiliate the groom, but rather to help you all to get to know him a little bit better.  Although as a disclaimer, I cannot deny that a little embarrassment and humiliation may be on the cards.

The first thing a best man is supposed to do in his speech is let everybody from the bride's side know what sort of man Sally has married, so here we go…Andy is caring, loving, funny, charming, generous and…*squint and show card to groom* Sorry mate but I'm struggling to read your handwriting! Well you get the idea anyway, he's a decent bloke.

Andy and I have been best friends for many years now, so obviously I have been witness to some of his finer moments.  I've have also, of course, been witness to some of his less fine moments.  And naturally, it's mainly those moments I shall be focusing on today…after all leading up to the wedding, he did say he didn't care what stories were told in this speech.

Even with this in mind, I soon realised that the majority of the stories still fell in to the ‘not fit for public consumption’ category!

Naturally, in preparation for writing this speech I consulted his family to see if there were any funny stories from the groom's childhood. John informed me that as a small child when he needed the toilet, he had to go and hide behind the sofa…well, ladies and gentlemen, I can assure you that 20-odd years later, thankfully, he has now grown out of this habit…however his toilet habits can still resemble those of a two year old, as was the case on holiday in Spain last year, when he had a little accident in the middle of the night!

Luckily for Sally though, being a dog owner she's quite often carrying a poop-a-scoop around with her so she must be fairly used to clearing up other people's mess!

Andy was the year below me at school and has always told me what an academic genius he is, and in fairness, there's nothing really to suggest to the contrary.

Now that may sound like he was ‘blowing his own trumpet’ and whilst on the subject, Andy used to take trumpet lessons back in school…Rock and Roll I know! Unfortunately for him though, a characteristic of a good trumpet player is that you need the right kind of lips.

I always thought that Andy grew ‘too cool’ to continue his trumpet playing, until a couple of years ago, when Sami reliably informed us that the real reason was because his bottom lip was in fact too big! I'm not sure if she made that bit up though?!

Luckily during our time in Tarporley 6th form, myself and Andy discovered a new shared interest in…lager, bitter, cider, vodka, Sambuca…well I think you get the idea!

We spent many good times ‘socialising’ in our local public houses and especially enjoying many lock ins with Ahmed and everyone in the Copper Kettle!

M6 (1)

After 6th form we both went our separate ways and whilst I was in Sheffield, Andy went to study in Liverpool.  He enjoyed his first year SO much at University that he decided to attempt it again.  He assures me it had nothing to do with excessive drinking and partying and was purely because he wanted a change in direction.

On our return from our time at University, we decided to move in to a rented house in town. I'm sure Sally will agree that Andy isn't the tidiest of people to live with, but we did share some great times whilst living in Handbridge.

Most people like to make their mark on a home, but Andy took this quite literally and one piece of advice I can pass on to Sally that I learnt from my time living with Andy, is never go away for a weekend and leave him with a bottle of Rum punch, especially if you decide to lay cream carpets in your new house!

It's rumoured that on the day in question, or should I say the morning after, Andy (and Matthew) were found face down on the living room floor next to a HUGE orange stain. For those who have never drank Rum punch, I'd just like to advise you at this point, that it is fluorescent orange in colour so as you can imagine it's not the easiest stain to get out of a cream carpet and this was confirmed by Chrissy, my mother and also ‘Compentent Carpet cleaners of Chester’.

I think it's safe to say, Andy really made a lasting mark on that house! Seriously though Sally, I think you need to get laminate flooring throughout your new home!

Not long after we had moved in together, Andy and Sally went on a blind date. After this first date, I remember Andy telling me that the night they met, there was enough electricity to power the National Grid…in light of them both being accountants, I like to think that what he really meant, was it was enough to power a Casio Calculator!

Andy is far from the stereotypical accountant. That said, in the run-up to the wedding he did prepare a spread sheet listing the probability of attendance for each and every one of us. He had Sally down as 100%…which I thought was a tad presumptuous.

After a few years together, Andy proposed to Sally out at sea whilst on a holiday in Spain last summer. He chartered a yacht and whilst they were supping Champagne, the boat became surrounded by a pack of dolphins.  A very romantic scene, I am sure you will all agree.

Now you may be wondering where this anecdote is leading…well, a lot of you here today may know that Andy's nickname is ‘Clogg’, but what I bet a lot of you didn't know is that Sally has her own pet name for him…*turn to groom* isn't that right DOLPHIN?

No seriously, their relationship has obviously blossomed down the years and anyone who has spent any time with you both will agree you make a fantastic couple.

The other love in the groom's life is Birmingham City. Being a massive Birmingham City fan, and having held a season ticket for many years now, Andy and his dad often make the trip down to see their beloved Blues on a Saturday afternoon.

In fact, he's such a huge fan that he still lets his dad pay for his season ticket, misses the train most weeks and when he does eventually turn up to meet his Dad, he never has any cash on him!

Andy and John will travel the length and breadth of the country to watch Birmingham play…as was literally the case the time Andy was getting the train to New Street from Manchester after a night out and ended up waking up in Cheltenham; on the plus side he woke up in time to get off in Cheltenham and return to Brum just in time for thesecond half!

Myself and Andy have spent many a holiday together. From our regular trips to Puerto Banus, to our trip to Tokyo, Sydney and Thailand (for Xmas back in 2007). I'd like to tell you these were highly cultural trips filled with museum visits, theatre trips & sightseeing  – however, reminiscing now I can confirm that in fact none of this ever took place & instead our time was mainly spent in hostelries sampling the local liquid delicacies. Each trip was an experience I can tell you.

This brings me nicely on to the stag do…well what can I say about the stag do, not a great deal in present company, but I can say we enjoyed a few days in the sun in Barcelona.

I can also let you know that Andy looks fantastic in lycra, he wears a henna tattoo remarkably well, and that Barcelona is in fact one of Boris Johnson's favourite holiday destinations.

Anyway that's about as far as I'm willing to go with that, or as far as I remember if truth be told!

Before I let you all enjoy the rest of the day, it's traditional to offer the groom some advice and as I have just mentioned with him being such a huge fan of Birmingham City, you'll be pleased to know that a successful marriage can be compared to football…so Andy…

–       Ensure you are fully committed every week.

–       Try your best to score every Saturday.

–       Don't put your tackle in too hard as you might get injured.

We've had some excellent times together over the years, and I know we will continue to do so in the future. You have been a fantastic friend and it really is a great honour to be your Best Man today and it's been a real pleasure getting to know Sally over the past few years so I wish you both every happiness for the future…

I also hope you have a great honeymoon, which I only found out today was spending some time travelling around Asia.  Originally I thought it was in North Wales as Andy told me he was going to Bangor for a week.

Just before I make a toast I'd just like to thank all the staff here at Nunsmere hall for their fantastic hospitality today…bar-keep, cue the moment when you need to start pouring me a pint!

And on that note, ladies and gentlemen, could I ask you to stand with me, and raise your glasses in a toast to Andy and Sally, the new Mr & Mrs Clegg.

We wish you well for the future and hope they enjoy a long and happy marriage.

To Andy and Sally.

Both are great best man speech examples, right? I bet you can write something more captivating than these. To get a hang of it, we first have to split up those best man speeches into these parts:

  • Introductory remarks
  • Body or content
  • Conclusion

First, let’s start with the introductory or opening remarks. Let’s cull out the opening remarks of both best man speeches so we can figure out how to write one.

Best man speech for friend example#1---(opening remarks)

‘’ Hello everyone. I’m Jason, and I’m cast today as “Best Man #2” which is a great honor and privilege for me. As many of you may know, I have known Cesar for a long time. In fact, I first met him when he was just a kid, as I was his teacher. Little did I know that one day, that kid would become one of my closest friends.’’

Hilarious best man speech ideas

Best man speech for brother template#2---(opening remarks)

Good Afternoon everyone and thank you for coming to this special occasion, it's lovely to see so many friends and family here today. I'm sure you will all agree it's been a fantastic day so far, yet every silver lining does have a cloud, and that is, unfortunately that you've now all got to listen to me ramble on for a while…

I did hear there was a sweepstake running on how long this speech was going to be and just so you know, I managed to get 200/1 on an hour and 12 minutes, so I hope you've all been to the toilet, filled your glasses and are all sitting comfortably….(funny)

Both remarks (particularly the second introduction) is pretty amazing. But I guess both are pretty standard, right?

This is your homework assignment: Can you write a simple introduction as seen above? Let’s try writing coming up with our own example and let’s see how it goes.

As a hint, you may start by writing down names of people you’d like to express gratitude to. If you are the brother of the groom or his best man, you can add your own parents to the gratitude list and mention why you are thanking them.

If the best man is marrying a girl from another country where English is not widely spoken, you can probably learn a few self-introductory phrases and you will end up getting some good laughs out of that.

M4 (1)

Before we moved on to other things, let’s look at second portion of the introductory remarks.

They come right after the extracts I culled them out from both speeches. You remember?

Ok…Let’s go back and use those same examples.

Example #1: ‘’ Cesar has always been an incredible athlete, and it was no surprise to me when he came back to work as an assistant coach after college…

Example #2: ‘’ Firstly I'd like to start by saying what a wonderful job the bridesmaids have done today and how fantastic they all look.

They are of course only outshone by Sally, who I think you'll all agree looks absolutely stunning…

So for those that don't know me I'm Dave and I've known Andy since we were toddlers…My main aim today is not to embarrass or humiliate the groom…‘’

If you read both examples, you will realize they come after the introductory remarks. After you have said a few things about who you are, expressed gratitude, and acknowledged the groom for choosing you to be his best man, you have start your best man speech with a captivating hook/opener so that it stands out.

You may use or one more of these strategies to come up with a thrilling hook.

  • Start with a little story about how you became friends.
  • If you are the brother of the groom and you’re much older, you can share a story about how you felt when your little brother was born. If you are his younger brother, you may share why and how you look up to him for inspiration and guidance.
  • Another great way to get everyone into your speech is wax poetic or sing about the bride and groom like this talented guy did when his brother was getting married.

Ok….now, let’s have some fun now: How would you like to start your best man speech? Please write down what suits your personality best and just go with it.

Having said that, let’s look at…

How to Write an Outline and Structure for Your Best Man Speech

Drafting an outline and structure for your best man speech should be a fairly easy process because this part of your wedding speech highlights what your relationship with the groom and bride has been like all the years.

Nonetheless, the problem lies in organizing your scattered thoughts into a very thoughtful piece and that’s something most best men struggle with.

To make this part of your best man writing process a breeze, you just have to center your thoughts on these ideas:

  • Share fun and fond memories
  • Write about your shared interests…For example, you belong to the same sports club or you like to dress alike, you went to the same high school or college
  • Write about his personal transformation from the time you became friends
  • Share your thoughts about how he met the bride

That’s not all. If you really know about the bride, you may share a few anecdotes about her too and mention how she complements your friend or brother.

If you really don’t know the bride very well, you can simply say that you are happy that they have found each other.

M4 (1)

That brings me to the conclusion of this piece:

How To End Your Best Man Speech With A Bang

There are several ways of ending on a resounding note and I am happy to share a few ideas to help you finish strong.

First, you can simply end with your best wishes or intentions for the bride and groom as seen in this second example.

And on that note, ladies and gentlemen, could I ask you to stand with me, and raise your glasses in a toast to Andy and Sally, the new Mr & Mrs Clegg.

We wish you well for the future and hope they enjoy a long and happy marriage.

To Andy and Sally.

Second, you can end with a poem or prayer if the couple is religious.

Third, you can frame your speech and gift it to the couple or give them a very thoughtful gift.

Mother Of The Groom Speech: The Ultimate Guide To Writing A Great Mother Of The Groom Speech For Your Son And Daughter-In-Law

Writing a great mother of the groom speech is definitely a labor of love you shouldn’t take lightly. It sure can be disheartening if not downright scary when your beloved son calls you out of the blue and ask:

Mom, can you please do a lovely mother of the groom wedding speech on my big day? When most moms find themselves in such a desperate situation, their defenses kick in and they conclude that the best thing to do is to just say something about their sons; surmising that it’s better to say something than not say nothing at all.

M3

You know what? Instead of feeling so anxious like a sailor caught up in a sudden storm, you have to breathe in and out to relax your whole body and then ask yourself this simple question:

What Should A Mother Of The Groom Say In Her Speech To Her Son And Daughter-In-Law?

Great question! As a mother of the groom wedding speech writer, I have seen how moms read a few mother of the groom speech examples and then hastily put their thoughts and emotions together without figuring out what goes into writing one.

This very act reminds of a story where two wood cutters were hired to cut down trees on a large farmland. Thinking he was good to go, he hurriedly set out to cut out those massive trees so he could collect his wages and go back home to be his family.

Mother of the groom wedding speech

The second wood chopper was about to start chopping down those trees when he remembered his grandfather’s advice to always sharpen his axe before he cut down any tree. So, he sharpened his tool for several hours on a sharpening stone and cleared the entire field before the other guy did.

The moral of the story: when you prepare and plan for anything, you can accomplish more in less time.

So, it is with writing a heartfelt mother of the groom wedding speech. You have to prepare and plan for your wedding speech and stick with that plan. That I would say is the secret recipe for success in the speechwriting world.  I am sure you might be wondering how you can do that. It’s simple.

Here’s what I recommend you do before you even think of writing your script. I always follow this proven plan when I need content ideas for a mother of the groom speech.

Before we dive deep into that, let’s look at one crippling thought that can stand in your way of success even if you feel what you have on paper is the best ever mother of the groom speech. Do you have any idea what that is? Hint: It starts with n and ends with s. If you mentioned, nervousness

Then, congratulations, you have been inducted into the mother of the groom speech club!

All joking asides, let’s look at…

How To Calm Your Nerves So You Can Deliver Your Mother Of The Groom Speech With Clarity and Confidence.

While it can be an unpleasant feeling, pre-performance nervousness is not a problem in and of itself. It shows that you’re only human and is a natural response to an impending situation that indicates an unhealthy mixture of excitement and dread.

To calm your nerves, you should first reflect on these questions:

  • Did I ever stumble over my words when I gave a speech?
  • Am I naturally confident person?
  • Do I lack writing skills?
  • Do I stutter when speaking before a small crowd of people?

If you’ve ever found yourself in any of these situations, then you have to put the past behind you and work at building your self-esteem and confidence. Here are practical ideas to boosting your self-confidence.

  • Get some sticky notes/post-it-notes and put these words on it:

''I would make my son proud with my mother of the groom speech''

Then, fix it on a prominent place in your home. This simple but proven goal-setting exercise is a as a constant reminder that you have an obligation to do your very best on his big day. Besides, it will help you overcome procrastination.

  • Learn to change your mindset. The difference between those whose excel behind the microphone and those who don’t has to do with perceptions and reality. The perception is that writing a mother of the groom speech is a hard thing to do and the reality that it’s indeed a very a hard thing to do if you don’t know how to get your idea off the ground.

  • Learn to be a self-confident person….I repeat….learn to be a self-confident person because it’s a learned skill. Before you throw a stone at me, let’s consider this scenario.

If you are comfortable behind a steering wheel, then you won’t feel nervous driving a car, right?  Likewise, you won’t feel jittery if you are a good cook in the kitchen.

It stands then to reason that you are on the edge because you don’t have excellent writing and speaking skills. Isn’t that the case? What that means is that you need to seek help. Once you seek help, you would be taking small but sure steps to becoming a good mother of the speech writer and speaker.

Ok…Let’s look at how to do just that. It all comes back to having a plan and following through on that plan. Your writing can be a breeze if you follow like this simple plan:

The fourth item on the list is my favorite resource of all my time. It’s a goldmine for tongue-tied mothers who are really struggling to come up with their own toasts.

Here’s Why You Should Use Well-Written Mother Of The Groom Speech Examples/Templates

  • You can modify one and adapt it for your personal use
  • You can borrow aspects of it to enrich your mother of the groom speech. Just imagine how memorable your wedding speech would be if you end with this piece of advice I culled from another example:

My wish for the two of you of you is that your
love grows deeper with each passing day. And by this, I am reminded of the quote from the movie: The Notebook. It says that the best love is the kind that awakens the soul; that makes us reach for more, that plants the fire in our hearts and brings peace to our minds.

It's my hope and prayer that you experience this kind of love. That
you have a family, and also tons of adventures.

life together!

  • Not only does tapping into them give you peace of mind but it’s also a creative outlet for inspiration.

For example, if you can’t seem to get started, you may read through this example slowly. Afterward, we will break it down and analyze it so you can figure out how to map out a vision for your mother of the groom speech.

Here it is:

Mother Of The Groom Wedding Speech Example/Template

Hello everyone! For those of you who don’t me, I am Lucille, very proud mom of the groom. I want to thank each and every one of you for joining us all today to celebrate this wonderful couple and their true love story. Today would have been beautiful regardless, but it wouldn’t have been as lovely without you.

And to Mark and Christie – it’s finally official!! We are now one great big family! Welcome to our crazy clan, and thank you for making Jimmy as well all of us Swains feel welcome into your family too! I look forward to many family celebrations and milestones with the two of you.

Okay, as the mother of the groom, I get to exercise my right to embarrass the groom just a bit. So here goes…

Jimmy was a happy baby, and a good toddler. He started walking when he was 8 months old! And when Michael was born, he wanted to carry him. I got lucky.

However, When Jimmy was 2 years old, his Uncle put his beer down and Stephen decided he was going to drink it. Suffice it to say, it did not agree with him. I’d love to say that he never picked up another beer for the rest of his life, but that is stretching it. I will say that he waited a long time before he tried it a second time!

When he was 6 or 7, he came home telling me that he was this lady’s hero because she had locked her keys in her car and his arms were small enough to reach inside through the crack she’s left in the window and get the door open. That amazed me that he was able to realize that there was an adult who needed assistance, and that he could provide that assistance even though he was a child. That desire to help others never left him.

Mother of the groom speech samples

Once when we were camping, a friend of ours brought a wig. It was a huge afro. Jimmy got up one morning, put on that wig, and went fishing on the other side of the lake. He did it just so that he’d know that as we were looking across the lake at him, all of us were giggling at his enormous hair!

When he decided to join the marines, he was 13 years old. I remember asking him why and his answer was that he wanted to protect his country. He signed up for the delayed entry program at 17. He went into the marines at 18, 3 months after graduating high school.

He served for 6 years and came home a disabled veteran. But that didn’t stop him. He went on to become the first person in our family to graduate from college, and he did that with honors. He continued his education by getting his masters degree in Geographic Information Science. He made us very proud.

There’s a story that I won’t tell in complete detail, but it has to do with Jimmy coming to my rescue and a tenant at a Hotel where I used to work. He protected both of us from a not so nice man who was being very rude to me and very abusive to my tenant.

Jimmy just came out and started barking order, and when the man decided he didn’t want to listen…Jimmy threw him through a window to get his attention!

When the police arrived, they listened to Jimmy, and told the other guy to shut up and sit on the curb. One of the policemen was also a marine. Jimmy looked at him and said Family First, to which the officer replied “Exactly, Family First!” That was the first time I heard Jimmy say that, but I guessed that the Marines had taught him that phrase. It meant a lot to me.

Jimmy has grown to be a smart, generous, compassionate, and thoughtful man. So of course, I was very pleased when he found a loving, kind, respectful, honest and loyal woman like Marina. I’ve waited for 10 years for this day, and I couldn’t be happier!

I knew the first time I met her and she would smile every time she talked about Jimmy that she was the one. And today, she is my daughter!

My hope for the two of you is that you will continue to grow together, that you will always bring out the best in one another, and that together you will make all your dreams come true. My advice for the two of you is always listen to what the other person is saying. Never take cheap shots during a fight, you know – name calling or bringing up the past.

Words can hurt, so be careful with them. But also, don’t keep things bottled up. Just communicate. Tell each other what you are thinking, and how you are feeling. And always say I love you. You can never say that too much.

Okay, with that I will ask everyone to raise their glasses to Jimmy and Marina! May you both live happily ever after!

M6 (1)

I am sure you enjoyed reading that example, right? This is an excellent example of a touching mother of the groom speech. Well, anyone can look it over and figure that they can do better than that. But, it is easier than done because a lot goes into writing such a sample.

As a mother of the groom speech writer, I have had the opportunity to review some mother of the groom speech draft example and a mistake I see most make is to read through an example and then proceed to write their own.

That is not a great way of getting things done, unfortunately. They say behind every great script is a good story. A story about how it was written so you fully grasp the concept behind the write-up.

Before you start putting your stories together, you first have to pause and consider a few things like:

  • The kind of wedding speech you would like to make
  • The length/duration of your mother of the groom wedding speech
  • When and where your toast will be delivered

Let’s look at each point briefly before we figure out how to easily and quickly write the content of your mother of the groom speech itself.

First,

  • The kind of wedding speech you wish to make

From personal observation and analyses, I have come to the conclusion that there are eight kind of mother of the groom speeches.

They include the following:

  • Touching/Emotional mother of the groom speech
  • Dramatic mother of the groom speech: Here’s an example:

  • Poetic mother of the groom speech
  • Joint parents (father and mother) of the groom speech
  • Music/Rap mother of the groom wedding speech: Here’s another example

  • Religious/Christian mother of the groom speech
  • Combo approach: This is really helpful if you really want your presentation to stand out.

My homework assignment: Reflect for a moment and ask what kind of toast you would like to make.

Second, look at…

  • The duration or length of your mother of the groom speech.

If you ask me what how long or short your mother of the groom speech should be, I will say that the content trumps everything else.

I have written long mother of the groom speeches that became a hit and I have also written short ones as well. So, it doesn’t really matter how long or short is. You just have to do a great job and no one would be too bothered about the length of your wedding speech.

However, if you have asked to speak for a certain number of minutes, then you have to be a good time keeper.

Let’s look at the third idea:

When and Where Will You Be Making Your Speech?

  • At your son’s engagement party?
  • At his rehearsal dinner?
  • At the wedding reception?

Having done all that work, you should proceed to create an outline for your mother of the groom speech.

By developing a clear layout for your ideas, you will save yourself from the mental torture of not knowing where to start and how to piece your storyline together.

How can you do that? I created this simple outline below from the mother of the groom speech example above.

Mother of the groom speech tips and ideas

Let’s see how it all unfolds.

  • Start with a greeting
  • Mention your name and state your relationship with the bride and groom
  • Thank the wedding guests for coming
  • Start with a hook
  • Talk about your son
  • Talk about your daughter-in-law
  • Share some marriage advice/Share your best wishes
  • Father of the groom toasts to his son and daughter-in-law

This is what you have to do next after creating an outline for your speech. Just pick an idea and back it up with some supporting material as you see below.

  • Start with a greeting

Here’s an example:

Hello everyone! For those of you who don’t me, I am Cathy, very proud mom of the groom. I want to thank each and every one of you for joining us all today to celebrate this wonderful couple and their true love story. Today would have been beautiful regardless, but it wouldn’t have been as lovely without you.

I think anyone can write this aspect of the speech so let’s move on to something else.

  • Mention your name and state your relationship with the bride and groom

This is an example to support it: Hello everyone! For those of you who don’t me, I am Cathy, very proud mom of the groom.

  • Thank the wedding guests for coming

Again, here’s an example: I want to thank each and every one of you for joining us all today to celebrate this wonderful couple and their true love story. Today would have been beautiful regardless, but it wouldn’t have been as lovely without you.

  • Start off with a hook

The hook of your speech is your gateway to your speech’s universe, and a well-crafted one that can make the difference between a great speech and one that falls flat.  It reels the listener in and makes them want to hear more of what you have to say.

M3

The hook or opening lines can be a joke, a funny story about your son’s birth, a personal story, a story about the bride and groom, use mother of the groom speech quotes , sing a well-known love song or share how it feels like giving a speech on your son’s  big day..

Below are two examples:

First, share a mother of the groom joke:

Second, share how you feel about giving your speech:

It’s probably no secret that I have been thinking about my speech

practically since the moment Laura and Bill got engaged last

November. For some moms it’s the dress, but for me….it’s the words.

I’ve been writing in my head jotting down notes on my phone while

staring at the roasted chickens at Costco (truly).

Afterwards, you have to do this:

  • Talk about your son

Here, you can share a few memories from when he was born to when he first told you about the bride. If you don’t know where to start, just write down several stories and pick from the pool.

From personal observation, most mothers center their anecdotes on these themes:

  • Anecdotes of your son from when he was a little boy so you can create a short mother of the groom speech from those memories.

  • Stories that define your bonds
  • ''Proud moments'' stories: Here, you mention why you are so proud of him and back it up with a story or two from his life.

A mom once said that her proudest moment was when his son doused out the flames on her barn.

Question: What are your most proud moments as a mom? Write them down and figure one which ones you want to use for your mother of the groom speech.

That brings us to the next point:

  • Talk briefly about your daughter-in-law

Main ideas to consider:

  • Talk about who she is to you and your son
  • Your impressions when your son first brought her home
  • Mention her beautiful traits
  • You may share how she brings out the best in your son

That takes us to this:

Culled from the sample are these words:

‘’  My advice for the two of you is always listen to what the other person is saying. Never take cheap shots during a fight, you know – name calling or bringing up the past. Words can hurt, so be careful with them. But also, don’t keep things bottled up. Just communicate. Tell each other what you are thinking, and how you are feeling. And always say I love you. You can never say that too much. ‘’

Before you go back to your seat…Just ask everyone to raise their glasses and toast to the bride and groom.

Father Of The Groom Speech: Here Are Time-Tested Father Of The Groom Speech Tips And Ideas To Help You Write A Wedding Speech For Your Son And Daughter-In-Law

Writing a heartfelt father of the groom speech can sometimes feel like facing a court of competent jurisdiction.

Picture this: You are brought before this respectful, impartial judge and you are asked a simple question.

You certainly have the right facts and figures but you suddenly feel faint and begin to mumble like a toddler that it appears as though you are a pathological liar.

Similarly, when fathers are asked to say a few words about their sons and daughter-in-laws at the wedding reception or rehearsal dinner, their father of the groom speeches don’t turn out as expected.

6

They have tons of precious memories deep inside their brains but it gets hard when they have to tie the loose ends together to form a sweet father of the groom wedding speech.

With a father of the groom wedding speech in mind, the question now on any curious lips is:

What Should The Father Of The Groom Say In His Wedding Speech About The Groom And Bride?

It’s actually much easier than you can ever imagine even if you have never done a speech of this nature before or not too sure if you have what it really takes to write and deliver a great father of the groom wedding speech.

Leaving a mark with your wedding toast actually boils down to making a plan and sticking to that plan like a soldier at war because proper planning is the womb of every achievement, big or small.

Before we get into the heart of the matter, let’s take a moment to reflect about the common side effects of nervousness on public speaking performance so you can figure out how to calm your nerves and speak with clarity, purpose, passion, and confidence.

Please be advised that I am going to dwell on this a bit since it can be the barrier between you and success on your son’s wedding day

Ok…So, how do you go from being a very terrified speaker to feeling very confident like President Obama behind a microphone?

Well, these confidence boosting tips can help you out even if you are as anxious as a hungry squirrel crossing a very busy street.

Allow me to digress here.

If you are always on the edge anytime you are about to speak in public, then you probably have one or more of these fears:

  • Fear of failure culminating from past speaking failures
  • Fear of being ridiculed or laughed at
  • Fear of imperfection
  • Fear of being despised
  • Fear of not being good enough

All these worries ultimately contribute to low self-esteem which affects your ego and self-confidence.

But that shouldn’t bog you down because just about anyone( I mean anyone) can develop a spirit of self-confidence in anything they set sights on. Self-confidence is a learned skill and not an ingrained thing.

For example, I am so sure of my public speaking skills and abilities when I am on stage but that’s not the case when I am in the kitchen because I am not a good cook. Does that in anyway indicate that I lack self- confidence? No and yes in both scenarios.

That means that the more you know about something, you will become naturally confident at doing things the right way. If you’ve been a victim of past speaking failures, then I recommend that you do one of these:

  • Acknowledge your weakness/past errors and seek help from the right sources since no man is an Island
  • Leave the past in the past and say to yourself that you would do all you can to make your son and daughter proud with your father of the groom wedding speech.
  • Learn to boost your writing and speaking skills by taking small steps daily to achieve your goal.

Having said all that, let’s look at…

How To Get Content Ideas For Your Father Of The Groom Wedding Speech

Once again, it all boils down to having a solid plan so you are not overwhelmed. This quote by Abraham Lincoln strongly resonates with me when it comes to finding content ideas for what to say at your son and daughter-in-law’s wedding.

He says: ''If I had six hours to chop down a tree, I’d spend the first four hours sharpening my axe''

Father of the groom speech writing quote

You have to spend some time digging up some tips, ideas, and advice about how to write a father of the groom wedding speech.

As a father of the groom speech writer, I follow these same exact steps to come up with ideas for writing the content of my clients’ father of the groom speeches and I recommend that you do same as it will save hours when you have to…to borrow part of Lincoln’s words ''chop down the tree.''

First, look within for help. If you have ever made a speech that was really good, then go back and dust it off and carefully examine how it was written.

Again, if you know a father of a groom whose speech really went down well, you can seek for help and have a brainstorming session together.

It could also be your own son, daughter, brother, a friend, and so on. That way, you can come up with some terrific ideas you would never have considered if you were doing it all by yourself.

Second, you can watch some father of the groom speech videos to get a fair idea of how awesome father of the groom speeches are made. Thanks to video sharing platforms, you can watch a few of them.

But the good and bad ones are on youtube.com.  I always watch both clips and learn from them.

For example, if you insert your preferred keyword ''father of the groom speech into the search bar, these results will pop up:

How to write a father of the groom speech

By the way, here are some wonderful clips you can learn a thing or two from.

As you watch these fathers tell their stories on film, do a little bit of self-analysis and ask yourself some basic questions like:

  • Did I enjoy watching this video?
  • Can I simply model my father of my groom speech after this video example?
  • Are there aspects of the clips I can borrow for my own toast?

Ok….. So, here are both videos.

Third, my all-time favorite tool I always look into whenever I get stuck is: wedding speech for son and daughter-in-law examples/templates.

Here are my main reasons and why you should consult well-written father of the groom speech examples/templates when you are looking for creative ideas, when you get stuck, or even when you don’t know how and where to start.

Take, As An Example, This Father Of The Groom Speech Example/Template

Can we please read it now? Let’s go over it carefully since we would use bits and pieces of it when we begin to analyze the whole thing in the subsequent chapters.

Hello all! My name is Jack and I’m the very

proud father of Samuel. I guess I should now

introduce myself as Diana’s father-in-law. I like

that Samuel was the first born for my wife Alice and I.

I was so proud, even before I knew what a man

he would become! But then, I realized that I

have been blessed. As a child he was very

athletic and strong. He walked at 9 years old. I

think that is also when he first kicked a ball.

Our house was full of balls! He excelled at every sport, particularly basketball. In fact, for those of you who don’t know, Samuel was inducted into the Hall of Fame in Melbourne at 36 years old.

Before basketball there was soccer. He was also

quite good at that. I will never forget when he

was nine years old and we went to Israel.

We were walking through a park and we saw some teenagers playing. These were like 14- or 15-year-olds. I asked if Samuel could join. He jumped in and scored a couple of goals.

These older kids were so jealous of his skill that

a couple of them actually pushed him! He fell

and cried a little. I of course jumped to his

defense and asked how they could do that to a

smaller child.

Their answer was that in Israel that is how they play. I helped Samuel up and brushed him off and asked him what he wanted to do. He said he wanted to play.

He played and scored a couple more goals. We left with big smiles on our faces. I only wish that I had said to those rotten kids “In Australia, THAT is how we play!”

As a teenager, we had no problems with Samuel.

He was always an athlete, so that kept him busy.

He also started going to the gym and building

that body. He played basketball all over the

country and even internationally.  Alice and I

did nothing but watch him play for several

years.

After he was done playing competitively, we

had to do find some friends so that we would

have something to do on a Saturday night! He

was a good big brother to his sisters, Melissa and Jennifer were always well-protected.

They felt like they had their own bodyguard! He was popular and had many friends. I’m glad to say that I see a few of you here.

So if I were to give him any criticism, it would

be that he is such a nervous passenger in the car!

Of course, he will tell you that I’m a terrible

driver. And his mother will agree with him

because they are both ridiculous when it comes

to this subject. Of course I’m a fine driver. I

owned a car dealership. I have had many very

expensive cars in my life! I do however like to

look at properties while we are on the road.

I see opportunity everywhere. Samuel sees oncoming cars and yells at me to keep my eyes on the road.

Really though, not a day goes by without

someone coming up to me and giving me

sincere compliments and praise for Samuel.

They tell me how fortunate I am to have a man like him as a son. I always say that my wealth lies not with any material or financial success, but with the family I was blessed with.

Then it was off to University where he

completed two degrees. Then he came back to

the family business and became my right hand man.

My parents always wanted to have our name onthe door followed by AND SONS. Samuel, like me, had great respect for my parents, his

grandparents. And they loved him and his sisters unconditionally.  When I became a grandfather, I realized how special grandchildren are.

Now I’m looking forward to having a few with our family name. Around six years ago Samuel brought a beautiful, smart, funny girl to our house. Of course, I’m speaking of you, Diana.

We could see the attraction immediately, but we also felt a bond. We have loved her like a daughter for years now, and I’m so happy that it’s now official.

Mark and Amanda, you have raised a beautiful

girl, inside and out. You should be so proud.

And now we are family too!

I do feel the need to say that I know Samuel’s

parents Lul and Bill and my mother and

father, Jerry and Karen are with us today in

spirit and are proud of Samuel and Diana.

I want to acknowledge them and the gifts they bestowed on Samuel in his lifetime. You two are the future, but one cannot forget the past. You cannot put a young head on old shoulders.

Advice for the two of you? Look out for each

other, always try to understand each other’s

feelings, and discuss things maturely when you

disagree so that you never regret anything that

you say. Mean words can never be unsaid.

Never take each other for granted, and always

be the others best friend.

Someone way smarter than me once said “Marriage is always believing that the other person got the short end of the deal.” Never stop feeling lucky to have one another.

I wish you both health, happiness, and every

blessing that I can bestow. We love you both!

To Samuel and Diana! L’Chaim!

That is a great example, right? It’s easy for any dad to look at this sample and assume that you can do something than better that example. Yes, you can. But, you may lose your sanity if you don’t probe deeper before putting in the work.

Believe it or not, there’s more to it than the eye can see. To write something captivating like the one we’ve just read, you need to sharpen your axe before you can chop the big tree so to speak.

I am sure you are wondering how you can do that. It all comes back to having a plan. Before you start to type away, you first have to decide on the kind of wedding speech you wish to make.

From writing and reviewing quite a lot of father of the groom speeches, I have realized that there are nine kinds of father of the groom wedding speeches dads can pick from.

They include the following:

  • Funny father of the groom speech
  • Emotional/Sentimental father of the groom speech
  • Dramatic father of the groom speech
  • Poetic father of the groom speech
  • Joint parents(father and mother) of the groom speech
  • Best man father of the groom speech: This applies when you are asked by your son to be his best man
  • Music/Rap father of the groom wedding speech: Here’s example:

  • Religious/Christian father of the groom speech
  • Combo approach: A little bit of all the above styles

The question is: What kind of father of groom speech do you want to deliver? Just write it down as it will determine the right style and tone of your speech.

For example, if you are a naturally funny person, then you can opt for a funny father of the groom wedding speech.

Again, you might also want to consider this:

How Long Should My Father Of The Groom Speech Be?

There’s a lot of contention about this topic. But, here’s my honest opinion based on my personal experience as a speech writer.  A wedding speech should be like a good movie. It should hold your attention from start to finish, so you want more of it.

Father of the groom wedding speech examples

So, if your presentation is long or short is not the issue here. Whether long or short, it should be engaging.

I have heard some good speeches that lasted for 10 minutes and made every one’s day. Some others lasted for just three minutes and received just a smattering of applause. All in all, just make sure you have a nice story to tell.

The ball is now in your court. Do you want to make your speech long or short? Please write it down. Moreover, you should also consider when and where you are going to deliver this speech. Will you do it at the engagement party, rehearsal dinner at the wedding reception?

After you have laid the ground, the writing process itself would be a breeze. So, how do you go from staring at the blank notepad to filling its pages with precious memories about your son and daughter-in-law?

Read on to find out how to do just even if you think your writing stinks.

Things can get fairly easy if you first create an outline/structure for your father of the groom speech.

By creating one from a well-thought out example, you will save yourself the agony of not only knowing where to start but also spending too much time stressing, thinking and worrying about what to include and what not to say in your wedding speech to your son and daughter-in-law.

At this point, I would like us to look at an outline/structure culled from the above speech sample. Think of it as the bare-bones of your speech. World-renowned public speaker and coach, Brian Tracy, calls it a working outline.

Here it is:

  • Start with a greeting
  • Mention your name and your relationship with the bride and groom
  • Thank the wedding guests for coming
  • Start with a hook
  • Talk about your son
  • Talk about your daughter-in-law
  • Dispense some marriage advice
  • Father of the groom toasts to his son and daughter-in-law

Most wedding speeches are centered on the above bullet points and you have to build your father of the groom speech on this very robust foundation. After creating such an outline, you have to pick out each idea and support what you say with the right facts.

Again, let’s use the father of the groom speech above as a basis for coming up with the supporting material.

  • Start with a greeting.

Here’s an example:

Hello everyone. I’m Ben and I’m Marc’s father.

On behalf of his mom Melissa and I, we’d like to thank all of you for joining us in this very special celebration.

I think that should be easy to write.Ok…let’s look at the second point:

  • Mention your name and your relationship with the bride and groom

As an example, you can modify this:

‘’My name is Jack and I’m the very proud  father of Samuel. I guess I should now introduce myself as Diana’s father-in-law…’’

If you are doing a joint speech with your wife or the groom’s mother, this can be your opening lines:

Hello everyone. I’m Ben and I’m Marc’s father and this my wife, Melissa.  We are the proud parents of the groom. We’d like to thank all of you for joining us in this very special celebration as our son and daughter-in-law are joined in marriage.

6

Now, let’s see next topic:

  • Thank the wedding guests for coming

Here’s an example you can learn from:

I want to thank you all for being here today. It’s such a special occasion and it’s been made more meaningful by having each of you with us to celebrate the love of Romeo and Emily.

Next on the bill is:

  • Start with a hook

The hook is like a movie trailer. Your hook should grab attention. This could be a joke, a personal story, some funny remarks about the bride and groom, use quotes to start, sing a well-known love song or share how it feels like whenever you are asked to give a speech.

Below are two examples:

First, a father of the groom joke:

Hello everyone! My name is Michael and I’m

Hor’s very proud father. On behalf of his

mother, Mir and I, thank you so much for

joining us today to celebrate love! This beautiful

couple have the world at their feet today, don’t

they? They say “love is blind”, but I hope

this adage isn’t true for Hor, so he can

see his lovely bride today! And Carline, I’m

guessing that the old adage “beauty is in

the eye of the beholder” is true for you

when you look at my son Hor!

What to say at your son's wedding as a father

Second, you can also share how you feel about giving speeches.

Afterwards, you have to do this:

  • Talk about your son

The trick here is to write down stories or anecdotes you want to share with the wedding crowd. Just put down lots of them before choosing those you wish to highlight.

From personal observation, most fathers build their storylines around these themes:

  • Anecdotes/memories of your son growing up: Here, you write down stories about his childhood, teenage years, what kind of man he’s grown up into...etc.

Then, you pick up a story from the different milestones and use it to create a short father of the groom speech.

  • Stories that define your friendship
  • ‘’ Proud moments’’ stories: Here, you mention why you are so proud of him and back it up with a story or two from his personal life.

Someone told me that one of the proudest moments as a parent was when his son courageously put out a farm fire.

Another proud moment for another parent was when his son walked across the dais to receive his high school diploma.

Question: What are your most proud moments? And do you want those magical moments to be the focus of your speech? If you do, just write it down and start a brainstorming session with his mom to recapture those good times.

Moreso, you can put a positive spin on embarrassing stories if it has a funny twist to it.

  • Write about your shared experiences

I remember writing a story for a father who said he and his son enjoyed kayaking. Once, they travelled to Botswana, Africa and while having fun on the water, his son fell into the water when he saw what he thought was a whale. He wasn’t a great swimmer and he began crying out for help which caught the attention of some locals.

Recalling stories like that shows how close you are to him and the guests would want to hear more of such father-son encounters.

You probably have plenty of them in your head. You just have to reflect to get them all down in  your notepad.

  • Focus on the future

I recently wrote a father of the groom speech who said he wanted to dwell on his son’s transformation into a wonderful man. This is how I started it.

''From his early days, he brought an infectious joy into our lives that warmed our hearts. And as he grew, so did his determination and thoughtfulness. He navigated the path of life with grace and strength, even with his older brothers providing their fair share influence, if you catch my drift! But today, we’re not just here to reminisce about the past…''

Here’s my homework: Which of those ideas would you like to go for? It’s possible to combine a little bit of each if you want to.

That brings us to the next point:

Key points to include:

  • Talk about who she is to you and your family
  • Your initial impressions when you first meet her
  • Talk about her wonderful traits
  • You may share how she balances out your son

That takes us to this:

  • Share some marriage advice

Culled from the sample are these words:

''Look out for each

other, always try to understand each other’s

feelings, and discuss things maturely when you

disagree so that you never regret anything that

you say. Mean words can never be unsaid.

Never take each other for granted, and always

be the others best friend ''

Before you go back to your seat…Just ask everyone to raise their glasses and toast to the bride and groom.

Well, you may combine your toast with any of these closing techniques if you really want to end on a memorable note:

  • Frame your speech and gift to the couple or give them a very thoughtful gift
  • You can ask a few questions about the bride and groom and give gifts to those who have the right answers.

What should i say at my son's wedding

Now, I want to ask you this simple question.  Can you really use those tips and advice to write your own father of the groom wedding speech in a nice way?

If you are still in a limbo, then you have to read on to find out how Glen did it even though his writing and speaking skills weren’t so great.

You see, he had tons of memories in his head.  But, juggling work and family meant he had little time to spare. Besides, finding the right words was like pulling out a child’s tooth.Looking everywhere for help, he landed on this page you are currently reading.
