Being a mother of the bride can be very tiring experience, particularly if you are single parent or mom.

From being there for your daughter in good times and bad, to helping her plan for her wedding,  to choosing the right wedding dress to wear , your duties never seems to come to an end.

Nothing Can Compare To This

But none of that can compare to the joy of standing up in front of your family and friends to express your love  and admiration for your daughter and the groom, how your own journey has been like as a mom, and what you wishes for the couple are as they start the roller-coaster ride of marriage together.

In spite of it being an honor and privilege to say a few words about your precious baby girl, most mothers cower with fear when they have to deliver a heartfelt mother of the bride wedding speech.

For fear of embarrassing their daughters, some mothers decide to skip it altogether. Others are forced to do it but are really scared to death whenever they imagine what to say.

Mother of the bride speech sample

I can still remember this mother of the bride who asked for help with her speech. She was so excited about the prospect of making her daughter proud with her wedding speech until she wrote back to tell me she couldn’t handle it anymore because the mere thought of making a toast made her heart miss several beats.  I felt so sorry for this poor woman!

But other nervous ones have been very successful in spite of their dilemma. Take the case of  Donna who wrote this hilarious and sentimental mother of the bride speech.

What she said is what all mothers should aspire to make on the wedding day.  Well, I am going to share her words with you.  After that, we will break it down bit by bit so you can figure out how to easily express the deepest sentiments of your heart on her big day.

Here you go:

Mother of the Bride Wedding Speech Sample

Hello everyone. My name is Donna and I’m Amanda’s mother.

As most of you know, my daughter lost her dad at age 13. I can’t think of a more terrible time to lose your father. But I feel privileged to have gotten to raise her since then, to love her with my whole heart, and to stand with her today as she marries her prince, Peter.

When she was little, she loved puppies. She had a dog that was crate trained and Amanda would take her pillow and her blanket and crawl into the crate, claiming it as her bed. The poor dog had no clue what to do, get into the crate with her or not.

As a teenager she was very shy and quiet, of course that is the time that she lost her dad.  But she found comfort in the violin and her drawings. She created beauty from pain. That has always been her gift. She later developed an appreciation for doing hair and make-up and is pursuing that dream now.

Amanda, you are quite talented but I’m glad you didn’t give yourself any scars or boils on your face today. You look beautiful!

I have to take a moment to say thank you to her step dad and my husband Charles, as well as Destiny’s Uncle Corey and her other grandparents: Mima and Papa. It was their love that sustained Amanda along with mine during the tough years.

Amanda, I know that your dad is looking down on you today filled with the same pride and joy that I have always felt with you. He is your guardian angel, and I’m sure he’s so happy you found the one who completes you.

Peter, you are a good man who has taught Destiny to love and to trust in a way that she has never done before. I know you will see this as the gift it is and cherish her heart forever.

My advice to the two of you is as you walk through this life cling to one another through the storms and enjoy every rainbow hand in hand. Never go to bed angry. Sounds like a cliche, but it’s true. Don’t hold grudges and always treat each other with respect. Love each other with all your hearts and have a happy life. When you decide to start a family,  that love for each other will be the key to raising children who will grow to know love too.

Peter and Amanda, your love is forever and a lifetime. Share every fear, every dream, every milestone together. Because now each other’s dreams are your dreams. I wish that every single dream you have comes true!

God bless you and I wish you nothing but good health, endless love, and prosperity.

Did you enjoy reading it? I enjoyed every bit of it. It’s a very short and sweet speech.

Please Don’t Do It This Way

Guess what most mothers do when they spot such an example? They conclude that they can write something close to that if not better. So, they either swipe it or look for similar ones and then start writing.

That approach always help if you are a very gifted writer or you happen to be struck with an air of inspiration that fills your mind with great ideas on the fly.

But as you are pretty much aware, not everyone is blessed with the gift of inspiration or words.

First and foremost, you have to plan what to say and how to say it with flair and confidence. It’s more like preparing your favorite dish: you have to use the right cooking ingredients to make it taste yummy.

Two steps are involved here in the pre-writing process if you really want to fill your mind with many rich ideas.

First, you have to watch a couple of videos. Why should I watch them? That’s a great question! Mother of the bride speech videos can give you an idea of what to say.

So, this is what I recommend you right away. Please go grab your journal or notepad and click on the play buttons in each of the video.

As you do, write down ideas, thoughts, and phrases that you think you can work into wedding speech for your daughter.

This Is How to Get Great Ideas to Come To You

The final step in the pre-writing process has got to do with picking a theme or style of your speech. There are several options to pick from.

But it’s always wise to pick something that resonate best with your demeanor and personality and not based on the latest fad or trend.

To choose a style, you should first reflect on these questions?

  • Am I person of few words? Can I make my speech short and sweet?
  • Do I have a soft heart? Will a sentimental mother of the bride speech be my thing?
  • Can I tell a little story about my daughter’s life and let everyone know how proud I am to be her mom?
  • Do people tell me that I am a smart person? If so, can I deliver something witty?
  • Most mother of the bride speeches sound quite similar. But, can I make my toast a little different? Can I make mine dramatic or even a little poetic?
  • Can I make my wedding speech a video- based one?
  • Am I known for my singing prowess? And I can make my speech like a song?
  • Am I a natural funny person? Do I really have what it takes to make a hilarious mother of the bride wedding speech like this one?

  • How about doing a joint speech as parents of the bride?
  • Am I talented enough to do bits and pieces of all that I have listed above?

Picking one of the above will ensure that you get a direction or purpose for your wedding toast. After you’ve picked the right style for your wedding speech, you start writing your talk.

To make the writing process much easier, you should split the task into these three parts:

  • Introductory remarks
  • Body or content of your wedding speech
  • And the concluding remarks

First, let’s figure out what goes into writing a great introduction. To do that, it’s best to re-look at excerpts of the above example.

Here you go:

‘’ Hello everyone.

As you are pretty much aware, the introductory address of any piece should feature one or more of these core components:

  1. Your name and your relationship with the bride and groom as you can see right above
  2. If you are a single mom or your husband is deceased, you may pay a small tribute to him. Once, this proud mom did that and these were her exact words

‘’ This candle that is burning right

beside me is in honor of  Brook’s dad Rex , who is in heaven. Brook, I can tell you that your dad was immensely proud of you.’’

  • You may also use that opportunity to give a special shout-out to family and friends who have had a tremendous impact on your daughter’s life. Can you write the names of such individuals?

Ok, let this give you a clue. You can mention

  1. The father of the bride. What other personalities are on your mind? Please put down their names and mention what they have done for you, your family, and the bride.

By the way, this is how it was properly captured in our example.

‘’ I have to take a moment to say thank you to her step dad and my husband Charles, as well as Amanda’s Uncle Corey and her other grandparents: Mima and Papa. It was their love that sustained Amanda along with mine during the tough years ‘’

What to say about your daughter on her wedding day

You may not have realized this. But if you scroll up this very page and read the introductory extract once more, you will notice this part of it as well:

‘’ When she was little, Amanda used to love puppies. She had a dog that was crate trained …‘’

The underlined words above are the introductory part of the speech we call hook because it draws the wedding guests into the speech itself.  Make it plain and boring and you will lose everyone’s attention. Make it engaging and you will win everyone’s heart.

Wondering how to win the hearts of many with a gripping intro? It’s actually simple and I am happy to share a few of those tips with you.

How to Write a Great Introduction

First, you can dive right into your presentation by sharing a story about when your daughter was only a little girl. Just make sure you pick something memorable.

Second, if you are a very emotional person, you can share a few details about what happened before she was born. It could be about several miscarriages you had prior to her birth, prolonged labor in the delivery room, or when the doctors told you that you were never going to have your own baby girl.

Third, you can of course make your remarks very funny or hilarious by sharing a little story.  Here’s an example:

‘’ It’s interesting what actually happened

before she was born. When her dad and I

were expecting her, the doctor told us early

on after examining me during one of our

prenatal appointments that I was going to

have a boy.

I dreamed of little girls and, somehow,

whenever I thought of myself with a child, I

always pictured a girl. So I felt crushed and

disappointed and gave up hopes altogether

of raising a little version of me when he said

that.

But that wasn’t the case on my due date

when we shockingly discovered that I had a

baby girl, much to my joy!’’

Fourth, you can kick-start with a few witty quotes. Here are some quotes you can use to spruce up your opening remarks.

  • "No matter how old she may be, sometimes a girl just needs her mom."
  • A daughter is God's way of saying, ‘Thought you could use a lifelong friend.'"
  • " Because even if the whole world was throwing rocks at you, if you had your mother at your back, you'd be okay. Some deep-rooted part of you would know you were loved."
    - Jojo Moyes, One Plus One
  • "To describe my mother would be to write about a hurricane in its perfect power. Or the climbing, falling colors of a rainbow."
    - Maya Angelou, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings
  • "The more a daughter knows the details of her mother's life, the stronger the daughter."
    - Anita Diamant, The Red Tent
  • "God couldn't be everywhere so that is why he invented mothers."
    - Diane Keaton as Daphne Wilder, Because I Said So
  • "By the time a woman realizes her mother was right, she has a daughter who thinks she is wrong."

We are going to use the sixth quote: ‘’ God couldn't be everywhere so that is why he invented mothers’’ to write something brief so you get an idea of how to use quotes to write a short intro.

Ok, this is how it is done.

When I was growing up, my own mother used to say that couldn't be everywhere so that is why he made mothers. In my child’s mind, I thought God was a mother who is always busy taking care of his numerous children in heaven and have employed mothers as assistants right here on earth.

I held onto that for a very long time until I had my first child who’s now grown into the beautiful bride we have before us today.  A few days after I gave birth to Elaine, mom visited us.

I remember that she looked me in the eye and said once more that God couldn’t be everywhere so that’s why he’s made you a mom. Just make sure you make him proud.

I smiled back at her and said’’ Mom, I pray that you live long to see the kind of woman she grows into.’’

That happened 30 years ago. Mom is now 100 years old and she likes to call herself Sweet Sixteen.

For those of you who don’t know, Sweet Sixteen is here with us tonight and can you do her a favor by giving her a thunderous clap? She’s been there for us through thick and thin and her words of comfort and encouragement have sustained us all these years.

She’s been such a blessing in our lives.  She and dad will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary next weekend! If that is not love, then I don’t know what is. I pray and hope that Elaine and Mike follow in their stead.

Did you see how I managed to infuse that quote plus a little bit of humor and even nostalgia into that short description?  Can use any of those quotes to write something short and sweet? You’ll never know until you give it a try.

Now, let’s consider...

How to Put Together Your Random Thoughts into a Very Nice Speech

After you have captured your initial feelings in the intro, you have to put together your scattered or random ideas and thoughts into a very touching mother of the bride speech.

On the surface, the body seems fairly easy to write.  But I am always amazed whenever I get desperate pleas from mothers who are unable to write their speeches.

In most cases, they have something written down. But their thoughts and ideas don’t flow too well and it’s my duty as a mother of the bride speech writer to connect the dots so to speak.

If you are stuck or unable to compose this essential part of your toast, then you can follow this simple plan.

Divide your writing sheet into these main branches:

  • My daughter’s childhood
  • My daughter’s teen years or adolescence
  • When she became a woman

If you are aiming for a narrative piece, then you can write down memories or anecdotes about each developmental stage of her life and pick out stories you are really fond of.

Alternatively, you may write a character-based speech and connect it to why you think your daughter will be an amazing wife and mom.

Mother of the bride wedding speech examples

For example, you can say that she’s loving, compassionate, and a very patient person. For example, you can elaborate on this character trait (patience) with a story about your daughter’s life.

Another technique you can use is to tell a simple story about how the couple met and how you have seen their relationship evolve over the years they have been together.

Here’s a very short example.

I remember back at the end of

2010, Dan started talking about

a girl named Ellen. When he

came home for Christmas that

year, he was somewhat

saddened that during the school

holiday break, he thought that

he may have potentially lost

her…

Now, let’s talk about…

How to Write the Ending of Your Mother of the Bride Speech

Your concluding remarks are always the easiest part of your speech to jot down.  But I cringe whenever I hear mothers wrap up because most of their conclusions have very similar tones.

It’s all too common to hear the endings in the form of a toast or pieces of advice. But I think you should make yours a little different and unique. By the way, here are some tried and tested ideas you can use to end up on a memorable note.

First, if you are a Christian or a religious person, you may end with a prayer or blessing before the food is served.  Here are some words you can use.

“May your marriage always bring glory to God, joy to one another and blessings to your family for many generations to come. May love and laughter fill your hearts and your home for all at the days of your lives. May you face every challenge hand-in-hand and side-by-side knowing that with God’s grace, you’ll conquer all obstacles together. May the world be forever a better place because the two of you fell in love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

How about this one from Numbers 6: 24-26

24 “The Lord bless you and keep you;
25 The Lord make His face shine upon you,
And be gracious to you;
26 The Lord [a]lift up His countenance upon you,
And give you peace.” ’

Second, if you are great singer, you can end it by singing a powerful love song about newlyweds or married couple. Here’s one of them

Third, you can end with a few quotes about marriage or even give them a gift as a token of their special love. For instance, you can write a short advice and frame it and gift it to them.

P.S: Is the thought of giving you a great wedding speech keeping you up at night? It shouldn’t if you do what most moms do. By following this simple plan that's guaranteed to help you write a great mom speech like the one you read above.

Claire was quite skeptical when she came to us but we kept assuring what she will make her son and family proud-and this is what she sent over after the wedding was over.

'' Hello Dan, their wedding went very well. The usual stress beforehand for the couple organizing the event but all things to do went so smoothly. I also like to say that I'm so proud of my speech, almost got a standing ovation, lol! I'm so glad I've found you. I will definitely recommend you to my friends and family for future weddings. I wish you the very best.''-  Claire, New Zealand
