Does a mother of the groom have to give a speech at his son’s wedding? This is a question most mothers grapple with when their sons ask them to speak at their wedding.

Well, you really have to honor your son with a great speech and this very short but moving story holds the keys to doing just that.

So, please stay tuned for everything you need to know about saying something about your son on his wedding.

What If You Were The One?

Mary loved his son not because they were kith and kin. But there was a story behind their very strong attachment.

Their strong bond of friendship was formed even before James was born. Her family had this chronic history of infertility that spanned decades.

A few in the family were lucky to have their own children and her entire tribe had only 10 members. Some had experienced miscarriages, and others lost their tiny babies at birth.

After her marriage to Chris, she really struggled to conceive. Test after test after test showed there was nothing wrong with the couple. When they least expected, the couple had a baby boy who filled their lives with hope and meaning.

Speech to my son on the day of his wedding

26 years later, their baby boy had grown into a very compassionate man and was about to get married. His mom felt he had to give him a gift that would outlast time itself and prove to everyone how much he loved his beloved son.

After carefully weighing several options, she decided to surprise his son with a mother of the groom wedding speech.

On his son’s big day, he gave a truly heartfelt speech that captured her story, the beauty of their relationship, and what his son means to her.

After reading the tips on this page, she delivered a speech that made his son feel so completely proud.

In the next lines, I will share with you her entire sample so you can pick a few nuggets you can use for your own message. So, please read the mother of the groom sample below carefully with an eye towards writing one that will make you so proud of his mom.

Mother of the Groom Wedding Speech Sample/Example

Hello everyone. I’m  Mary, James’s mom and I am so happy that we are finally here to celebrate with James and Stephanie and their true love story. We waited a year, but they finally got the wedding they deserve!

James has always been such a good heart. Even when I was pregnant with him, it was a dream pregnancy, so easy. Of course, the birth part was a bit less of a dream. 26 hours of labor.

Christopher and I wore a path in that maternity ward, walking and walking all night long.  Everytime we’d pass the nursery we would stop and look at the babies. I couldn’t wait to finally meet you, but apparently you were just fine. And your father with his camera!

He took pictures of the whole thing to document my level of pain. But he stayed with me the entire time, and when the three of us could finally go home, he rented a limo to take us. Your first ride in a car was in a limo!

James was always very smart and basically a great kid.  He did well in school, was loved by his teachers, had many friends, and he loved playing sports.

When he turned 6, we introduced him to his new baby brother Tanner. We used to joke that Tanner had 3 parents. James was the best big brother in the world. Always looking out for him, a great role model, very helpful, very supportive, they have a close relationship to this day, even though they are as different as night and day. That is always something that makes me so proud.

When James was very small we lived near South Coast Plaza and our favorite thing to do was to walk there to go on the carousel.  James did not like riding on the horse, so we would always end up sitting on the bench.  Going round and round sitting on a bench with a toddler.

One day when his Poppy and Grandma Ethel  were visiting, we went to the San Diego Zoo.  When James saw the elephant ride, he got excited and wanted to ride the elephant.  There was a very long line and I thought , “oh great, we’re going to wait on this long line, I’m wearing a skirt and will have to straddle this elephant and I know he won’t go on.”

When we got to our turn sure enough, he jumped right up there and loved riding the elephant.  He was afraid of the carousel horse; he had no problem riding the grand elephant. I think that says something about  James. He may be cautious when it comes to cheap thrills, but when it comes to something real? He embraces that part of life with everything he has.

Even as a teenager, James was so calm. He played football and when they had to go for away games, he would just sit on the bus doing his homework. Some nights they wouldn’t get home until midnight, but he was completely not stressed. I had to do all the stressing for both of us.

James was 1 of 10 valedictorians at his high school graduation.  Then he was off to UC Berkeley where he graduated in 4 years.  He started his own financial /wealth management company this past year during COVID  and is doing well.  He has wanted to do this for a very long time and felt the time was right now. I always thought he would make a great teacher, like mother like son, right?

Well, James says he is a  sort of teacher.  He says “ I teach people how to manage their money to live their best life” He is extremely passionate about what he does and his clients are full of praise for him.

That’s why I could not imagine a more perfect partner for him than Stephanie. She’s also so hard-working and intelligent. She recently completed her PhD in public health. She also kept up with her studies and maintained a long-distance relationship with my son, making sure they got to see each other almost every weekend. That is determination. Christopher and I call them 2 peas in a pod, and it’s really true.

We met Stephanie at a wedding. James was the officiant, so Stephanie had to hang out with us. I really believe she became part of our family right then and there. But I’m still so glad that she’s actually family now.

You know, I started running in my 50’s and James and I completed our first half marathon together.   I have continued running and when I completed the Beach Cities Challenge, James said, that if my mom can do this, so can I and he completed it too.  He finished his series after me, so I ran an extra race, so I could run with him when he completed his Beach Cities Challenge. He was a big support to me and always very encouraging.

When I ran the LA Marathon he and the rest of my family was there to cheer me on. The reason I’m telling you this is it is a good example of something my husband always makes a point of saying. He says that our “core family” which did  mean the four of us, and now means the five of us, always stick together.

I know that someday our core family will be even bigger when James and Stephanie have beautiful babies. We are always going to be here for the two of you as you go on this great marathon we call life. Don’t ever forget that.

My hope for you two is that you always have one another to talk to, to be best friends, and to depend on one another in good times and bad.

And I hope that your home is always filled with love and laughter. James, this is not a carnival ride, this is the elephant! Have a blast both of you.  L’Chaim! To James and Stephanie!

They say a promise is a promise and I really want to do everything possible to honor the promise I made earlier on this page.

So, without further ado, let me walk you through how you can make the most of the above mother of the groom sample to write a sincere speech that comes straight from your heart.

But before we start, let’s look at a few things you need to know before you think of putting your ideas together.

The first step is to decide what you have to do.

Like everything else in life, the speech writing process involves planning.  Planning what to say, how to say it, and where to get the ideas to say what you wish to say.

Of course, it is possible to wing it if you have this sudden bout of inspiration that compels you to write so well like one of the finest writers of our time.

The key to pulling it off is to start on a right note. So, you should first get a purpose and theme for your toast.

And by this, I mean deciding how you want your mother of the groom wedding speech to achieve a certain effect. To do that, you should ask yourself these simple questions:

  • Do I want to give a short and sweet speech?
  • Should my speech be sentimental, sappy, or heartfelt?
  • Have I been asked to simply make the welcome speech?
  • Do I want to render it in the form of a poem?
  • Can I make it different by making my speech like a song like this one?
  • Can I keep it as simple as I can?
  • Can I make it a narration of my boy’s life by picking a few memorable stories about his life?
  • Am I funny enough to give a funny mother of the groom wedding speech?
  • Can’t I do a father-mother of the groom speech or a joint speech with my husband?
  • Or can I use bit and pieces of all the above styles to say something about the groom and the bride?

Moter of the groom wedding toast outline

Please take this from me: If you are going to speak at more than one venue, then you may decide to say make a simple toast at one setting(rehearsal dinner) and give your mother of the groom toast itself at another venue, say the wedding reception.

Second, you need to get a clear idea of how such speeches are made. I know you have been to several weddings in the course of your life. But you obviously weren’t there for the speeches. But for the food and drink and everything that comes with it.

So, you can warm up your brain and mentally prepare for task by watching a few videos about how mother of the groom wedding speeches are delivered.

The theme or purpose you selected above will ultimately influence the kind of videos you watch.

For instance, if you think you are a naturally funny person, then you can search for ‘’funny mother of the groom speeches’’ with the intention of getting great ideas for writing your own hilarious wedding toast.

Similarly, if you are thinking of making a sentimental mother of the groom wedding speech, then you can input that phrase into the search box of your favorite video sharing platform.

By the way, here are two of the best videos I found online that can stimulate your brain into coming up with the best ideas.

Now, please press the play buttons in the following videos below. Then, watch them, and write down tips and ideas that speak to you.

A step-by-step approach for writing a mother of the groom wedding speech

Now, let’s dive right in by looking at a step-by-step approach to writing a memorable toast for your son and daughter-in-law.

First, let’s start by looking at how to write the introduction. We can do that effortlessly by reviewing the opening address of the above template.

Here it is again:

‘’ Hello everyone. I’m Mary, James’s mom and I am so happy that we are finally here to celebrate with James and Stephanie and their true love story. We waited a year, but they finally got the wedding they deserve! Derek has always been such a good heart.  ‘’

M6 (1)

Please keep the underlined sentence in mind as we will come back to it later. I know it’s been ages since you left high school.

But do you remember what your high school English teacher said about writing an engaging introduction? Can’t give it a try?

If you said that a great intro compromises of a short self-introduction, then I think your memory is like a magnet! Congratulations!

Please don’t worry if you had no clue.  If you really don’t want to waste time on this aspect of the introduction, then you can simply emulate the example you saw.

But it goes beyond that because your introductory remarks should also prominently feature one or more of these components:

  • Give a special shout out to people who played a tremendous role in your own life, your family, as well as your son
  • Thank the parents of the bride for welcoming your son into the family

Action Tip: Can you write down a short intro and mention names of people you want to say thank you to for something they have done?

Well, let’s take a stroll down memory lane and write down names of people you want to express appreciation to for their love and support over the years.

Now, let’s come back to this: James has always been such a good heart.

I know you might be wondering what the heck that means? Ok, it is called the hook and I will explain what that means as we go on.

You see, that is part of the introductory example we are looking at. You might not know this. But all opening addresses are made of these elements:

  1. Greetings and a short self-introduction(which we looked at the onset of this page)
  2. The hook (it is that part of the speech that draws in the listener into the story)

The hook should be funny, engaging, and inspiring so that your family and friends imagine your speech to be a very special one and not like the boring stuff they often hear at most wedding receptions, rehearsal dinner or even at engagement parties.

How to Capture the Attention of The Wedding Guests

How then do you can capture the attention of the wedding guests from the get go? It’s simple and the following examples can help you capture the spirit of a great intro.

First, you can start with a joke or tease your son with a story that won’t embarrass him.

Here’s an example.

About half of you know the groom (my son) as Jack. Others call him Bread….But I like to call him Jack Bread because that weird combination sounds like music to my big ears!

So, for just a few minutes, I would like to tell you a few stories about your favorite guy: Jack Bread.

For those of you who don’t me, I am Margaret and my friends call me Miss. Bread….Sounds strange right? That a mom and his son share the same nickname. Just hold on and I will tell you the complete story.

Well, I actually got that cool nickname when I was in high school….

Did you notice how I slipped in that small story to entertain the audience? If you are not a naturally funny person or love to joke as a family, then you should just go with something you are very comfortable with.

Second, if you are a musically inclined person, you can simply write a simple song about your son’s life and toss in a few pictures without actually making a traditional speech. This music video can serve as a very useful guide.

Third, if you are a Christian or you have a strong religious upbringing, then it makes a lot of sense to start your speech on a note of gratitude to God as well as to your family and friends or a simple prayer.

Fourth, if you are a very emotional person and think your mother of the groom speech should have streaks of that to be felt throughout your message, then you can start with some touching quotes.

Here are some great ones you can make good use of.

  • "You mean more to methan anyone in this world." —Peter Pan, Peter Pan

  • "You are my greatest adventure." —Mr. Incredible, The Incredibles

  • "If love is as sweet as a flower, then my mother is that sweet flower of love."---Steve Wonder
  • "Mothers hold their children's hands for a short while, but their hearts forever."- Unknown

Finally, if you have ever written a letter to your son that captured your love for him in a very special way, you can start with that. For example, if it was a letter to him advising him about his future spouse, then you can start from.

This is how this can be done. Please read this example very carefully.

When my little husband (that’s what our neighbors used to  call us when he was toddler because we were extremely close). Well, when my little husband (now Rose’s sweetheart) turned 21 years old, I wrote him a letter that gave him great advice on what to look out for when choosing a spouse someday.

In that letter, I said Mike if you marry who loves you more than anything else and you will never regret it. I had never seen him with a lady. So, when he first brought Rose home 6 years later, my mind went back to the contents of that letter and I realized that his choice of spouse was a reflection of that maternal advice.

M4 (1)

If you remember writing a lovely letter to your son, just dig around for it and see if you can rework parts of it for his wedding speech. I did it once for a client called Lori and her speech was a hit with everyone from family to friends of the bride and groom.

How to Give Them Something to Smile About

The body comes next after the introduction. So, let’s see….

How to put together the Content of your mother of the groom wedding speech

The body of your presentation is all about saying something about your son and daughter-in-law.

Here, you first begin by talking about your son. To make things much easier for you, you can do a little brainstorming and write down at least four (4) character traits of your son starting from when he was a toddler until now.

For example, my son is a kind, diligent, patient, daring, and caring young man.

Next , get stories or anecdotes for each attribute and use those that appeal to you write a rough first draft. Remember, you can always go back to review it until you are very happy with your speech.

That’s not all though. You can write a few things about your daughter-in-law. What you say should be thoughtful, honest and sincere and devoid of any resentful tone even if you think or feel she’s not the right woman for your precious son.

Now, let’s see

How You Can End Your Mother of the Groom Wedding Speech with a Bang

The golden rule of all memorable speeches is this: start with a bang, and end with a bang. It’s not uncommon for most wedding toasts to end like this:

‘’ Without further ado, please raise your glasses and toast to the happy couple’’

Is there anything wrong with that, really? Absolutely not. But that closing remark is not really inspiring since a first grade student can even master that.

Believe it or not, this is one of the most important tributes you will give in your lifetime so your conclusion should pack a punch.

Well, you can easily wrap up with any of these tips if you really want your speech to stand out.

First, you can end with an advice. Here are a few practical marriage advice that can always help the couple stay true to their promises. You may share what has actually helped you and your husband weather the storms.

  • Choose to love each other even in those moments when you struggle to like each other. Love is a commitment, not just a feeling.
  • Make time together a priority. Budget for a consistent date night. Time is the “currency of relationships” so consistently invest time into your marriage. There are no shortcuts. Building a strong marriage takes time and effort.
  • Your friends will impact your marriage, so choose your friends wisely. Surround yourself with friends who will strengthen your marriage and remove yourself from people who may tempt you to compromise your character.
  • Give your best to each other, not your leftovers after you’ve given your best to everyone else.
  • ‘’Your words matter to your spouse. But the tone in which you speak those words matter just as much. ‘’----Dave Willis

What to say and write to your son on wedding day by his mom

Second, you may end with a blessing or bible quotes or even a prayer if you are a Christian or a person of faith. My friend Christine used this bible verse when her sons were getting married and I am sure she would still use them when her grandchildren are also getting married someday.

Psalm 128

A song of ascents.

Blessed are all who fear the Lord,
who walk in obedience to him.
You will eat the fruit of your labor;
blessings and prosperity will be yours.
Your wife will be like a fruitful vine
    within your house;
your children will be like olive shoots
    around your table.
Yes, this will be the blessing
for the man who fears the Lord.

May the Lord bless you from Zion;
may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem
all the days of your life.
May you live to see your children’s children—
    peace be on Israel.

This is also another powerful verse you can use in a prayer for the couple.

Numbers 6:24-26

New International Version

24 “‘“The Lord bless you
    and keep you;
25 the Lord make his face shine on you
    and be gracious to you;
26 the Lord turn his face toward you
    and give you peace.”

Third, you can end with a few quotes from the movies. I am really fond of these ones.

“The best love is the kind that awakens the soul and makes us reach for more that plants a fire in our hearts and brings peace to our minds.” – The Notebook

“When you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.” – When Harry met Sally

Fourth, you can make your conclusion super memorable by asking a few members of your family to share with the couple what has worked for them in their marriage on video and share it with couple. It may project it on a screen.

Furthermore, you can put your own piece of advice on a picture frame and gift them to the couple and they will thank you for that very kind gesture.
