Plus a whole lot more….

If you are ready for this, then let’s get started with this touching story as it has some connection with writing a heartfelt mother of the groom wedding toast.

Martha had been to many weddings her whole lifetime and loved everything about wedding traditions, particularly the speech- making part of the show.

As someone blessed with the gift of words, she loved it whenever she heard someone give a great wedding speech and wished that she too would make her own children so proud when they are getting married someday.

Martha had always looked forward to having her own children. But, after five years of marriage, she thought she would never see them.

She taught grade school and loved children and wished to have her own so her joy could be complete because she always said to friends and family that when a mom has a child, she has a flower for keeps. That was her personal motto.

10 years after her wedding, she had her first child and son and they named him Samuel after Martha’s father. In a heartbeat, Samuel grew up into a very tolerant, happy, and caring little boy who never met a stranger.

He was so much loved and admired for his kindness that both adults and his peers loved to hang out with him.  More especially for his sharp wit. Once, Martha caught him having a talk with the president of Volunteer America. Later she gingerly asked what they talked about and Sam replied that he tried to fool him with a trick. When that failed, he challenged him spell his last name.

He promptly spelled it out correctly. Then he revealed he wore a name tag. Samuel wasn’t your typical teenager. He was involved in any of the adolescence drama stuff but all he did was to bury his head into his books and ended up becoming a Straight A student in high school.

From high school, Sam transitioned to college and out of the home.  To Martha, it was a loss since it was the first time his only child and son had moved out of home. But Sam made the most of his stay there and kept telling his parents everything that happened.

He excelled and got a great job with great pay and progressed up the ladder to gain invaluable experience that brought him more success.  It was at this same time that he brought Abigail home. Abigail was his first love and as soon as he feasted eyes on her, he told his mom and dad that he was going to marry her.

What should a mother say to his son on his wedding day

True to his word, their wedding plans began after dating for only six months and asked his mom to say some remarks at their wedding. That almost freaked mother even though, she’d been long looking forward to making her son proud on his big day.

Sure, she was good with word but never had she imagined that it would take something extra to come up with the good words to help her write a mother of the groom speech.

After days of working so hard on it, something didn’t click. Thankfully, she reached out to someone who had helped mothers from around the world deliver wedding speeches for their sons successfully and together they came up with this short wedding speech for her son.

A Mother of the Groom Speech Toast Sample/ Template

Good evening ladies and gentleman. Thank you all for joining us and we are so happy to have you here.

I am Martha, Samuels’s mom and I want to thank you all for coming here today and sharing this special day with us.

And to everyone who traveled several miles to be with us here today, we truly appreciate the time and expense involved to get here. Thanks a lot for coming.

Samuels’s marriage to Anita brings back very fond memories of the time Alfred and I got married.

I remember when we looked eye ball to eye ball and made our vows to love and help each other discover our true self and potentials.

Samuel, when you came into my life, you were so cute and perfect and felt blessed to have you in my life.

The days that followed, we bonded like never before and I looked forward to seeing you grow into a wonderful man.

In a heartbeat, you grew into a very tolerant and friendly little boy with a love for the outdoors.

Even though you are getting married to the love of your life, I still have so many memories of you growing up.

From the time you’d ramble on at the dinner table, telling us some winding stories that sometimes drove us to the brink of sanity to the good ones we loved to listen to.

I also can remember you following your dad and grandfather around, either in the pig barn or riding in any of the farm equipment.

As a child, Sam didn’t like the slow pace of his growth. You looked forward to growing taller than your brother and I still can remember how you’d get a height rod to measure yourself to see how fast you were growing.

Much to his dismay, he kept getting the same results anytime he checked his height before quitting for good!

The years that followed, he grew up too fast and became a very responsible teenager.

When Sam was 16 years old, he became our savior so to speak.

Samuel was home by himself on a Friday night when a knock came on the door around 11:00 p.m.

A mother and daughter were there, and asked him “do you know that your backyard is on fire?”

Samuel tried to reach us, but we didn’t answer the cell phone at the lake.  He took charge of the situation quickly by dousing the fire before the neighbors arrived.

There aren’t too many young teens who would have handled themselves so calm and cool like you did. But you bravely did it to the admiration of those who saw you.

Samuel, we were extremely proud of you on that day. You risked your life on that day to keep our property safe and that incredible act of bravery made you the family’s ‘’hero!’’

Today is your big day and we are so proud of the person you’ve become at such a young age.

You have accomplished so much working on your dad’s farm as a millwright.

And we know you have made such a wise decision to settle down with the love of your life as life certainly gets better when you find someone who truly loves you.

I will miss all those moments we have spent together, particularly your nice stories and hearing you say ‘’hi mom’’ as you walk through the door each night after work.

How to write a heartfelt mother of the groom toasts

Anita, I know for sure that you are blessed to have found Samuel.  Having been married to Alfred for quite some time, I know how important and sweet finding a loving spouse is.

Samuel is very kind and tender-hearted. I remember seeing Anita for the first time years before she and Samuel started dating. She was likely about 12 or 13 at the time.

She had her hair tied back in a ponytail, and a skip in her step (she still walks like that today), as she headed to the barn. She kindly waved to me.  I remember thinking, “oh boy… that looks like a nice girl, I wonder if she would be interested in Samuel sometime down the road”.

Now, here we are as a mother’s dream has come true.  Samuel and Anita, from this moment on you will have to start laying a firm foundation for a flourishing marriage. And I am confident that you both have what it takes to do so as you have similar passions and dreams.

Nevertheless, a good marriage is like cultivating a good farm. It is a work in process that can never be left unattended- not even for one day.

What that means is that you always have to pay a price to make your marriage so strong and beautiful.

Make sure you put each other first in everything you do and never ever take each other for granted no matter what.

That way, nothing can quench the love you have for each other.  God bless you and love you both.

Did you enjoy it? I did but don’t know about you. Whatever it is, let’s go on to how you can easily write a heartfelt mother of the groom wedding speech toast taking inspiration from the above example

Are you ready? Please relax, shut everything down and sit still as we delve deep into how to get the right words and ideas to write a mother of the groom speech example that would make your son and new daughter-in-law so proud of you.

Here You Go, My Sister!

If you go back to read that template once again, you will notice that the above example and every wedding speech you will ever hear is made up of these core elements: introduction, body, and conclusion.

So, first and foremost, let’s start by looking at …

How you can easily compose the introductory remarks of your mother of the groom wedding speech for your son.

First, let’s review the introduction we looked at so we can figure out what goes into writing a great introduction.

Here you go:

‘’Good evening ladies and gentleman. Thank you all for joining us and we are so happy to have you here. ….And to everyone who traveled several miles to be with us here today, we truly appreciate the time and expense involved to get here. Thanks a lot for coming.

Samuels’s marriage to …. brings back very fond memories of the time ‘’

If you study the excerpted example very carefully, you would notice that it has these core components

  1. Short self-introduction which is the norm as you know it
  2. Then, thank everyone for coming

Now, I love people who take action. So, this is what I want you to do right now.

Using the example above, write down your own self introduction.

Oh I forgot about something I would like you to know. Your opening lines can be used to thank people who have had profound impact on your son’s life.

Here’s an example you can learn from.

A Special Day like this takes the efforts of many people who worked hard and tirelessly to create this incredible Day. First and foremost, let me thank Samuels dad, Dan, whom I have been able to count on like 1,2,3 for love and support from the day our son was born. He’s a great role model and an amazing father.

Did you see how I wrote that? It’s actually simple. All you have to do after writing a short self-introduction is to jot down names of people who have been a tremendous blessing in your son’s life and indicate the help you got from them.

You can mention personalities like

  1. The groom’s father or your own husband
  2. The groom’s siblings or friends
  3. Your own parents (groom’s grandparents)
  4. Your neighbors
  5. The bride’s parents

…….the list goes on and on.

So, please sit down and write their names down.

Closely connected to the above is how you start your wedding speech as we saw earlier: ‘’ Samuels’s marriage to …. brings back very fond memories of the time ‘’ ‘’

Simply put, you have to start with a bang so you endear yourself to the wedding attendees. Do you want to know how you can do that? I am beyond excited to share with you a couple of simple ideas you can easily use.

Do you have a very touching or funny story of what really happened when your son was born? You can share that moment to lighten up the mood. I remember that a woman once wrote to me and said that when their child was born, her late husband was giddy with excitement that he ended up driving to the dump on their way back home.

She didn’t tell me what really happened but I assumed he lost control of the wheel due to excitement, right?

Do you remember what happened prior, on the day or even after he was born? If you, then please write it down.

  1. If your son’s entry into planet earth has no exciting twist to it, you can simply start your mother of the groom speech with a witty quote and this is proven to work if you are aiming for a sentimental mother of the groom speech.

Here are a few quotes you can actually use to enrich your wedding speech for your son and daughter-in-law.

Quote #1: "My greatest blessing has been the birth of my son. My next greatest blessing has been my ability to turn people into children of mine’’ – Maya Angelou

Quote #2: "There has never been, nor will there ever be, anything quite so special as the love between the mother and a son."- Unknown

Quote #3: "Raising boys has made me a more generous woman than I really am.’’ – Mary Kay Blakely

Now, can you use any of that to grab the attention of the audience? Can you really do that?

Ok, I am going to illustrate with Maya’s quote: ‘’ My greatest blessing has been the birth of my son. ‘’

I am going to borrow these words: my greatest blessings….’’

My mom once said that the greatest blessing in her life was being the mother of three girls. Well, I got to understand her better when I became a mom to four strong boys and it has made me realize that motherhood is a very wonderful adventure that never ends.

I first go to taste the joys of motherhood when Samuel (name of the groom) was born….

Got that? Don’t you think ears will perk up when you start your mother of the groom speech this way? You be the judge!

Now, let us consider

How You Can Write The Content or Structure of Your Wedding Speech For Your Son

To figure out how that can be done, let’s first re-look at excerpts of the above template/example.

Here you go: Please take note of the underlined phrases as I did that on purpose and I am going to use it to elaborate on those phrases soon.

‘’As a child, Jonathan didn’t like the slow pace of his growth. You looked forward to growing taller than your brother and I still can remember how you’d get a height rod to measure yourself to see how fast you were growing…..

When Sam was 16 years old, you become our savior so to speak…..There aren’t too many young teens who would have handled themselves so calm and cool like you did. But you bravely did it to the admiration of those who saw you…..’’

Well, let’s see what goes into writing the content of most great mother of the groom speeches.

There are several factors to consider before you even jot down the storyline. If you just get into writing mode, your ideas might not flow very well.

This is what you have to do to get it done right.

First and foremost, you can watch a few YouTube videos about mothers of the grooms making their speeches to get a fair idea of how to go about it. Here are some great videos I found for you specially.

Video# 1: Mother of the groom speech example

Video #2: Mother of the groom toast sample

Second, you have to decide how long you want your speech to run. 3 minutes? 5 minutes? Or what duration do you have in mind?

Third, the best way of striking a chord with the wedding guests is to choose a style that your listeners that best reflect who you are.

It’s actually funny to see the overwhelming majority of mothers modeling their wedding speeches after very successful ones.

But that’s wrong because everyone is unique and it’s always a wise idea to choose one or more of the following styles: dramatic, tender, poetic, rhythmic, narrative, and even funny.

Fourth, after you have picked your style, you have to decide the direction you want your wedding toast for your son to go and you can do that by dwelling on or more of these aspects of his life:

  • A memorable story about his childhood as we saw in these lines: As a child, Jonathan didn’t like the slow pace of his growth.
  • An anecdote about his teenage years as seen here: When Sam was 16 years old
  • A remarkable story you can remember about when he was growing up

Hint: You may cull stories from each of those developmental stages of his life and combine them to say something about your son.

Action Tip: Starting from your son’s infant years to when he brought the bride home for the very first time, write down the most memorable moments you can remember.

Then, pick the good ones you wish to use and use them to craft your storyline. Remember to not mention any negative thing about his past years.

Let’s look at another important part the equation:

How You Can End Your Mother of the Groom Speech Toast with a Bang

Have you ever wondered why some wedding toasts become the talk of the evening while several others barely hit the mark?

If you said that the wedding speakers ended on a remarkable note, then you are right.

Recently, someone wrote me that his speech was a hit and on hindsight, I think the concluding remarks might have struck a chord with everyone because I said something to this effect:

‘’It goes without saying that it takes love to create a marriage and after several years that marriage creates true love.’’

That’s a quote that strongly resonates with me and I am sure that did the trick for him.

You might have written a touching mother of the groom speech. But if you don’t end well, your speech might be very well received as you’d anticipated.

Well, here are some cool ideas you can use to finish strong.

First, you can end with a joke.

For example,

Always settle disputes before going to bed and you will end up making love first thing in the morning.

Second, you may end with a nice poem like this one by Linda Harrison.

M is for making a future that will last.
A is for Accepting both the present and the past.
R is for Respect for each other every day.
R is for remembering those special things to say.
I is for Issues, which no doubt will challenge you.
A is for Always find a way to talk them through.
G is for Growing the love that keeps you strong.
E is for Endurance when sometimes things go wrong.

Third, if you are a devoted Christian or a religious person, you can use one or more of these bible verses to write a faith based conclusion.

James 1:17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

Proverbs 31:10

“Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.”

Proverbs 18:22

“Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the Lord.”

I can use the James 1:17 verse to write this short example.

Tom and Shelly, the love for you have for each other is a gift from above so always cherish each other and you will have a very fulfilling marriage.

Did you notice how I infused that short verse into that marital advice? That’s how it is done.

Fourth, you can share nuggets of wisdom based on your experience as a wife and mother.

Below is an example from the speech example we saw earlier

A good marriage is like cultivating a good farm. It is a work in process that can never be left unattended- not even for one day.

What that means is that you always have to pay a price to make your marriage so strong.
