Mother of The Groom Speech Or Toast: Now, You Too Can Easily Write A Funny And Heartfelt Wedding Toast For Your Son
Have you ever listened to a funny mother of the groom speech or toast that almost threw you out of your seat? You probably enjoyed it so much that you said to yourself that when your son is getting married to the love of his life, you are going to take a stab at it.
Now, that dream is about to manifest as you prepare to give a hilarious mother of the groom speech or toast. But let me ask you this simple question. Do you really have what it takes to come up with a humorous wedding speech that will bring the house down?
Most mothers erroneously think they have to be naturally funny to come up with hilarious wedding toasts. While having that quality can help make your mother of the groom speech a hit, it’s by no means all the only way to endear yourself to your audience.
There are several other ways you can tickle the wedding guests with excitement even if you are not so friendly like a bulldog or you are not a naturally funny person.
Before we do so, let’s look at this one thing about funny mother of the groom speeches.
Contrary to what most folks think, you really don’t have to force it if you can’t recall amusing anecdotes about your son’s life. You see, your utmost concern when you grab that microphone is to tell the guests about how he is being transformed from that little boy who used to play with his toys to the wonderful man he is now.
So, in effect, you are in to tell a story about his life. If in the process of doing that, you throw in a few fond and funny memories here and there in a non-embarrassing way, you will give everyone a reason to hang on to your words.
However, if nothing of that sort runs through your entire speech, you just have to go with what you remember about his life.
After all, we all have different personalities and your son’s life might not have been punctuated with funny events and incidents.
With that said, let’s dive right in by looking at what goes into writing a funny mother of the groom speech or toast.
There are processes involved in in writing a great piece, and you have to go through each of them unless you are an exceptionally good speaker who can easily make things up in their mind.
The first step is the pre-writing process. Here is where you get yourself in the mood before you actually plan out the content of your wedding speech for your son and daughter-in-law.
One of the best ways of getting yourself in the mood is by watching funny mother of the groom speech videos. So, this is what I recommend right now. Go watch a few videos on Youtube.com or on your favorite platforms and take note of how such presentations are made.
As you watch a couple of them, please put down tips and ideas you consider very helpful that you think can help you put your thoughts together in a very coherent manner.
By the way, I found two great examples that can inspire you to come up with great ideas for your speech.

Funny mother of the groom speech #2
I really enjoyed both clips and I hope you did too? Did you find anything that you wish to add to your wedding speech or toast for your son?
Well, another tool that can easily help you write the best mother of the groom speech are wedding speech examples.
Do you know why? It’s because they contain a lot of helpful tips and ideas that you can easily adapt for your own narration.
Unfortunately, I have come across situations where some wedding speakers have carelessly swiped them without customizing them to suit their own needs.
That’s so wrong. Well, I want to show you how to make the most of them. So, please bear with me for a while as I walk you through an easy-to-follow step to using mother of the groom speech examples to come up with your own speech.
Here you go:
A Funny Mother of the Groom Speech Sample
Good evening and welcome everyone! I’m Millie, Dan’s very proud dad!
I would like to thank everyone who has come from near and far to share in our joy and happiness. It means a lot to see you all here.
Dan is my first child and it seems like only yesterday that Eric and I were in a state of nervous excitement as we awaited the arrival of our first baby boy.
Dan was a very active little boy who was always determined to steal the spotlight at any cost.
As a little boy, he felt the best way to do that was to protect his family.
You see, Dan absolutely loved Robin, of Batman and Robin fame, and how they beat up the bad guys. To imitate Robin, Dan‘’the super fighter’’ would run around our house in his Robin outfit like a wind, making sure that his cape was flying, and pretend that he was fighting all the bad guys in the neighborhood!
Once, he climbed up a wall near where we used to live and tried flying only to land on the grass with a loud thud. Unfortunately, he lost one tooth and we had to send him to the emergency room and we came out of there as a wise little boy!
Growing up, Dan loved playing sports. He was very much into High Schools Sports that he got a varsity letter in Soccer and Lacrosse for being the most valuable player his senior year.
In spite of those sporting accomplishments, he was so focused and worked so hard to achieve his goals and dreams. Dan, we are so proud of you and who you have become.
I have always hoped that you will find someone who really cares for you and I couldn’t be happier that you are getting married to someone who really looks out for you.
I still remember the day my son introduced Margaret to us and I could tell by the way he looked at you and the special light in his eyes that he’s found someone he loves dearly.
Dan and Margaret, today is your big day and I have a few words of advice for you.
Your marriage, like every other, is like a garden. It needs intentional care and cultivation to make it look great. By loving each other, holding each other so close, and being there for each other in good times and bad, you will be making a concerted effort to make your love blossom and you will come to know as time goes by that you simply can’t live without each other.
You both are heading on an amazing journey and I know you are going to have so many happy years together. God bless you.
Did you enjoy it? I did enjoy the time Little Dan tried to imitate Robin. While it’s very tempting to copy this mother of the groom speech example, you don’t have to because there are so many eyeballs on it and you will come across as a copycat if you do that.
Well, I am going to break it down into bits and pieces so you can get an accurate idea of how to write a heartfelt and funny mother of the groom speech or toast.
Are you ready? Ok, let’s get started.
First, let’s start with...
How to Write the Introductory Remarks of your Funny Mother of the Groom Speech or Toast.
To make things easier, I am going to take excerpts of the speech example before us to help us put our write what we want to say for our opening remarks.
Here you go:
‘’ I’m Millie, Dan’s very proud dad!
I would like to thank everyone who has come from near and far to share in our joy and happiness. It means a lot to see you all here.
Dan is my first child and it seems like only yesterday that Eric and I were in a state of nervous excitement as we awaited the arrival of our first baby boy. ‘’
Now, please look at that opening address and see if you have anything to say about it.
If you’ve read that extract very carefully, you will notice that there are two parts to it. Do you have any idea what these two sections are? You may scroll up and look at it again.
Please don’t worry if you still can’t figure it out. I am here to help.
I noticed these things:
- A short-self introduction
- The wedding speakers relationship with the groom
- Expression of gratitude
- As well as a rather brief line about how happy the mother of the groom was when his son was born a couple of years ago.
These are by no means what a perfect introduction really entails. But it at least gives us a clear idea of what goes into writing a great introduction.
You may use one or more of the following strategies to write a kickass opener that will perk up ears.
First, you can simply share how you felt when your son was born as illustrated above.
Second, you can simply state why you are so excited about him getting married to the love of his life.
Third, you can start with a quote about marriage. For example, you can start like this:
There are two memorable days in every man’s life. When he’s born and when he gets married to a truly beautiful woman.
Did you see how I wrote that?
Having written that short example, let’s now turn our attention to how to start your humorous mother of the groom speech with a bang even if you are as stiff as a board.
First, if you burst out into a well-known song everyone can sing along to, you will naturally have a lot of admirers at the wedding reception. If you have a good singing voice, that will be a plus for you. If you are not that gifted, you can still give it a try. With a little help from someone who is musically gifted, you might make a headway.
Second, if anything funny came up when your son asked you to give a funny wedding speech, you can share it with them. Here’s an example to illustrate it.
It’s probably no secret that I have been thinking about my speech practically since the moment Dan and Janet got engaged last November. For most moms, it’s the dress. But for me, it’s the words. I’ve been writing in my head, jotting down notes on my phone while staring at the roasted chickens at Costco(truly). I‘ve been distracted on the tennis courts and let my team down. But every time, someone calls out love, I think of another family anecdote about Dan.
- If you are going to make a very short but hilarious mother of the groom speech, you can probably say after mentioning who you are and your relationship with the groom.
See the example below
''I promise that this is going to be the shortest mother of the groom speech ever ‘’ and then you roll down a very long sheet of paper and jokingly add this: ''Seriously, did you believe me when I said that? Remember, Eric and I have raised him for 30 years now and you shouldn’t expect anything less than that. You are even luckier to have gotten these few pages considering how old he is. I just didn’t have the budget to make a short movie…I was actually considering making a movie about his wonderful life! ''
- You also can come upstage looking so funny like a comedian or be adorned with unusual jewelry to lighten up the mood.
- Ok, How about this idea as an alternative to all of that? If your soon-to-be daughter in law is from a foreign country where English is not the lingua franca, you can learn a few phrases and incorporate them into your toast.
For example, if she from France, you can learn how to greet and do a short-self introduction and her family will love it. You don’t have to master it to communicate it well. The fact that you said something in their native tongue will make them applaud for you.
If you are fluent in the language, then you can render part of your speech in English and the other half in her dialect. Better still, you can compose the entire thing in English and summarize the key points in their own language.
Now, let us see...
How To Write The Body or Structure of Your Mother of the Groom Toast
Before we do, let us look at excerpts of our model template to guide us as we analyze this crucial aspect of our presentation.
‘’ Dan was a very active little boy who was always determined to steal the spotlight at any cost. As a little boy, he felt the best way to do that was to protect his family.
You see, Dan absolutely loved Robin, of Batman and Robin fame, and how they beat up the bad guys. To imitate Robin, Dan ‘’the super fighter’’ would run around our house in his Robin outfit like a wind, making sure that his cape was flying, and pretend that he was fighting all the bad guys in the neighborhood!...‘’
This is the most interesting part of the wedding speech which is undeniably the easiest section to write because it’s simply a narration of your son’s life right from when he was a little kid to when he finally brought the love of his life to meet the family.
So, how then did you get ideas to write the content of your toast? This is where things get perplexing because you probably have so many ideas running through your mind and wondering how to distill many years of memories into a very short time.
Thankfully, below are some pointers that can help you refine your thoughts and ideas before committing them on paper.
So, please grab your paper and provide answers to the following questions.
- What was your son really like when he was a little kid?
- What was he like when he was becoming an adolescent?
- Does he have any accomplishments you wish to share? If you think it’s obnoxious to talk about it, please stay clear of it.
- Do you have memories of your vacation trips or anything you did together that really deepened the mother-son bond?
- Do you recall any funny and fond memories you want to add to the body of your message?
Please note: If you can’t recall funny events about his life, just stick to the facts. Remember, you are not there to necessarily make others laugh per se, but to give an account of what your relationship with your son has been like over the years.
After you have provided answers to the questions above, piece them together to form your first draft. Afterward, you have to keep redrafting it until you are very happy with what you have got.
With that said, let’s now turn our attention to...
How to End Your Mom's Wedding Speech with a Bang
As we always do, we will carefully review the conclusion of the speech example so we can figure out how to write a memorable conclusion.
Here we go once again:
Dan and Margaret, today is your big day and I have a few words of advice for you.
Your marriage, like every other, is like a garden. It needs intentional care and cultivation to make it look great. By loving each other, holding each other so close, and being there for each other in good times and bad, you will be making a concerted effort to make your love blossom and you will come to know as time goes by that you simply can’t live without each other…’’
If you should ask me where you should put in all your efforts, then I will tell you that you should never take the closing remarks of your funny mother of the groom speech for granted.
Here’s why it’s so important. You see, the closing remarks are like the last lines of a letter written to someone you adore so much.
It has to be succinct and memorable and not verbose because they are the very words that will be remembered for years to come. Nevertheless, a lot of mothers end very poorly using the same clichés we hear at most weddings.
Yours will have to be unique to be remembered. So, I am going to share with you a few tips and ideas to help you do just that.
First, you can end with a simple piece of advice as you saw in that excerpt. You could use your personal experience or even embellish it with some good marriage quotes.
Below are a few of them.
‘’A perfect marriage is just two imperfect people who refuse to give up on each other’’ ― Kate Stewart, Loving the White Liar
‘’Marriage – the roots are deep, the covenant is solid, love is sweet, life is hard, and God is good.’’- John Piper
‘’Never marry the one you can live with, marry the one you cannot live without.’’- Aleatha Romig, Consequences
‘’It is not a lack of love, but a lack of friendship that makes unhappy marriages.’’-Friedrich Nietzsche
Moreover, you can also write a faith-based piece of advice with words from the Bible.
Here are some scriptures you might want to use to spiff up your speech.
"So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate."- Matthew 19:6
‘’Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.’’ –Ephesians 4: 2-3
"And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love."- 1 Corinthians 13:13
Again, you can compare how they both look like to inspire laughter
For example, you can say that Dan (your son) and Amanda are like two peas in a pod.
That can become:
I absolutely love the fact that Dan and Amanda are like two peas in a pod. Do you know why? Once, we were hiking up a mountain when Amanda fell off a small muddy cliff….
Do you see where this is going? I hope it gives you an idea of how to showcase how they complement each other in an amusing way.
All in all, your mother of the groom speech should strike a perfect balance between humor and any style you want to pair it with.
For instance, it can be 30 percent funny and 70 percent storytelling or sentimental.
P.S: Is the thought of giving you a great wedding speech keeping you up at night? It shouldn’t if you do what most moms do. By following this simple plan that's guaranteed to help you write a great mom speech like the one you read above.
