Funny Father Of The Groom Speech or Toast: Here's an easy to follow step to writing a funny and heartfelt wedding speech for your son
Have you ever listened to or heard a funny father of the groom speech that made your day? Just pause for a moment and see if you can remember one thing the speaker said that almost threw you out of your seat.
If you ask any father whose son is about to get married to tell you the kind of wedding speech they envision giving on their son’s wedding day, the vast majority of them will tell you that they intend to make a hilarious father of the groom speeches.
There’s something really special about making a humorous speech about your son at the wedding or rehearsal dinner as it is one of the best and easiest ways to endear yourself to your family, friends, and even the guests.
Well, even though that’s the dream of most fathers, putting on a rib-cracking performance that will be talked about even days after the wedding bells have stopped ringing is not an easy walk in the park for most fathers.
Most fathers wrongly assume that you have to blessed with a natural gift of humor or even have to be a talented comic writer and performer to deliver a funny father of the groom speech.
While having a great sense of humor or having a funny personality can help you accomplish your writing or speaking goals, that gift is by no means all you need to make your listener’s laugh with excitement.
To make your wedding speech about your son funny, you just have to throw in one or two amusing anecdotes you can remember. So you shouldn’t in any way force it or pretend to be someone you are not. Remember, your speech should essentially be written using good stories about your son’s life.
Having said that, there are proven ways of making your father’s speech humorous even if you are so serious like a corpse and we are going to look at those tips in this post.
Before we do so, let us watch a couple of funny father of the groom speech videos so we can figure out what goes into writing them.
So, here’s my piece of advice before we start: Watching the videos are meant to give you a pretty good idea of what to expect. So, grab your pen and book or journal so you can jot down ideas that easily come to you.
Here you go:
Funny father of the groom speech #1
Funny father of the groom speech # 2
Let me ask you this: Which clip did you really enjoy? I or 2 or both? Whatever your choice is, I just hope you had fun and learned a thing or two from watching both.
Now, I want us to see the comic techniques that were used by those speakers so you can best understand how to write yours.
First is a situational comedy: a kind of comedy arising out of ordinary or everyday situations. Here, you can do a little brainstorming about your son’s life from when he was a little boy and pick anecdotes you would like to use.
The second is, stand up humor or comedy. Stand up humor is a comic delivery in which someone entertains an audience with jokes. If you know a good joke here you can work it into your speech. Most fathers really embarrass themselves by doing all they can to come with something up even if there’s no room for it.
Another style is satirical comedy: a kind of comedy that mocks human weakness. Most fathers mostly use them. But their usage often backfires because the speakers end up saying things that don't have to be said. If you ever write something, ask yourself if it won’t embarrass your son or anyone.
Last is self-deprecating humor. Using this requires that you say something awful about yourself to catch the attention of your audience.
For example, you can say: When Kelvin was a little boy, his friends used to ask me if I was his grandpa even though I was only 25 years old when we had him. You see, for some very reason I was balding and the kids thought I was too old to be his dad.
With all that being said, let us look at a short funny father of the groom speech example. After we have read it, we will break each part of this sample down so you can get a perfect idea of how you also can write something similar if not better.
So, put on your thinking cap and take notes as you read through it carefully.
Here you go:
A Short but Funny Father of the Groom Speech Example
Good evening everyone. For those of you who don’t know me, my name is John and I am the father of the groom.
I want to thank you all for being here tonight, and it means a lot that many of you have traveled from near and far to help celebrate this very special day.
As long as I can remember, Jerry was a fiery little boy who was always an endless source of laughter and joy.
Little John was a great listener but she was talkative as a parrot. He always had something to say and if you asked him why he loved to talk, he would look back at you, point at his mouth and say’’ I talk a lot because I have a big mouth!’’
Once, we were at Disney and he kept screaming so loud that a little boy asked him to keep mute. Guess what he did? He stood back, looked at the little kid, and said: ‘’ You are not so lucky. You would have been so loud if you had a big mouth like mine ‘’
Even though his mouth is not as big as it used to be, my son can still talk his way out of anything. So, Michelle, you have been warned.
In a flash, the ‘’Little Chatterbox’’ grew into a very outgoing, funny, hardworking, and resourceful teen who took on a variety of jobs to support herself and the family back home.
One time, I saw him going under his bed and curiosity drove me to see what he was doing there. It wasn’t before long that I heard what I thought was the clinking of coins.
Thirty minutes later, he emerged from under the bed with a box full of coins.
So, I asked him what he was doing with the box and he said: ‘’ Dad, I want to become the first millionaire in the family. I just want to touch many lives like the good ones.
So, I will keep saving coins until every room is covered in coins since you said sometime back the banks can’t be trusted! ‘’
That was who he was. A wise hoarder. He saved every penny and nickel and it doesn’t come as a surprise that he’s now working as a stockbroker.
The years have rolled by pretty fast and it’s such a great pleasure watching Jerry grow from that funny boy into a wonderful young man.
I couldn’t be happier that he’s found someone to start the next chapter of his life with.
Michelle’s family has been friends with ours since we became neighbors some twenty years ago.
I have known her for a very long time and I can tell you that she is very polite and respectful. On top of that, she’s a great cook. Nothing beats food prepared by this great cook! Should you see that Jerry has gained a little weight in the weeks ahead, then you can be sure that Lady Michelle’s Kitchen has become his favorite place in their house. Isn’t he lucky?
Jerry and Michelle, I want to wish you and well and to congratulate you both for finally tying the knot. My father said when I was getting married to my wife that the secret to a successful marriage is all about dating your partner and putting them first.
That stuck with me so much and it has helped us walk on the endless journey for 40 long years now.
So, my advice to you both is to always date each other and be each other’s keeper. By doing so, you will rekindle the spark in your marriage and enjoy your special love together.
God bless you and I wish you the very best in all your endeavors.
Was that good? Yes, it was. While there’s the tendency to swipe some of the contents, you don’t have to because so many eyeballs are also reading and you will sound off as a copycat if you do.
Now, this is what I want you to do now. Please pick your pen and your journal and put on your thinking cap as I walk you through how that was written in a step-by-step manner. What you will glean from my analysis will easily help you write your father of the groom speech as you want it to be.
We are going to break it into parts as we move along, so let’s start with how to write the introduction of your father of the groom speech.
To do so, let’s relook at excerpts of the introductory remarks in the speech above so you can model your example after that.
‘’ Good evening everyone. For those of you who don’t know me, my name is John and I am the father of the groom.
I want to thank you all for being here tonight, and it means a lot that many of you have traveled from near and far to help celebrate this very special day.
As long as I can remember, Jerry was a fiery little boy who was always an endless source of laughter and joy…’’
If you read through the speech template above thoroughly, you will notice that there are basically three parts to that script.
Do you know what they are? Well, they are the introduction, body, and conclusion.
The introduction sets the pace for the rest of the toast.
The opening remarks are quite similar to meeting someone you love for the very first time because you just have a single chance to make a favorable impression on the guests.
So, other than the customary greetings that precede the rest of your hilarious funny wedding speech for your son, you should put in a lot of thought, energy and creativity into coming up with a very captivating opening remark that will have them salivating for more.
Thankfully, there are several proven ways of starting with a bang and I am more than excited to share some of them with you. They are guaranteed to bring the house down even if you are not a naturally funny person.
So, please don’t go anywhere. Just stick with me a little longer.
Here they are:
- If you are your son’s best man, you can tell the wedding guests how you felt when he asked you to be his best man.
Below is an example.
For those of you who may not know me, I am John Williams. I am proud to be Ben’s father and his best man.
I figured initially that Ben would ask one of his buddies to be his best man since those youngsters have hot, fresh blood.
But I feel very honored that he asked me to step into that very active role even though I am not so young anymore and my blood doesn’t flow as well as it did when I was Ben’s age. It’s now cold as ice.
Did you see I wrote that? That’s one of the best ways of bonding with the wedding guests with a great intro.
Now, let us consider the other styles.
- If your soon-to-be daughter in law is from a country where English is not spoken as the first language, you can take the pains to greet her family in her language if they will be at the wedding. You don’t have to worry about getting it right because your in-laws will be very excited that you acknowledged their presence in their own language.
- If you are going to make a short speech, you can probably say this after your initial self-introduction.
See the example below
''I promise that this is going to be the shortest father of the groom speech ever ‘’ and then you roll down a very long sheet of paper and jokingly add this: ''Seriously, did you believe me when I said that? Remember, Ben’s mom and I have raised her for 30 years now and you shouldn’t expect anything less than that. You are even luckier to have gotten these few pages considering how old he is. I just didn’t have the budget for a short movie…I was actually considering making a movie about his life because it’s so dramatic! ''
- You can also start with a good joke. Don’t force yourself to come up with one if you don’t know one. You can simply make fun of the groom or others if you want your opening remarks to be lighthearted. But make sure you don’t have to go too far.
- A lot of fathers have very horrible singing voices like airplanes taking off a runway. But if you can sign your introduction well, it will be a hit and probably go viral! Wouldn’t you love it if your speech becomes a sensation overnight?
- You also can come to upstage looking so funny as a comedian. You may appear in an unusual dress or don a very bizarre wig even if you are not going to make a funny father of the groom speech.
- You may share a story about what your son was like when he was a little boy as you can see in the above example. I am sure that will be so easy to do.
It’s now over to you….which of those tips or ideas do you think you can work with?
Please decide what you will be comfortable with and go with it. Thank you
We have to draw the curtain on that. Let us now see...
How To Write The Body or Structure of Your Wedding Speech For Your Son
Before we do, let us look at excerpts of our model template to guide us in this all-important chapter of our discussion.
''As long as I can remember, Jerry was a fiery little boy who was always an endless source of laughter and joy.''
Little John was a great listener but she was talkative as a parrot. He always had something to say and if you asked him why he loved to talk, he would look back at you, point at his mouth and say’’ I talk a lot because I have a big mouth!’’
I still can’t stop laughing as I re-read this portion of the speech. Well, the body is the easiest part to write since it’s simply a narration of your son’s life from when he was a little kid to when he found the love of his life.
If you are still not sure how to come up with good ideas for the structure of your son’s wedding toast, then I highly recommend that you provide answers to the following questions.
- What was his life like when he was a little boy?
- What was his attitude like when he was an adolescent?
- Does he have any accomplishments you wish to share?
- Do you recall any trips or vacations or anything you were involved in that made your bonds of friendship stronger?
- Do you recall any hilarious anecdotes you want to add to the body of your father of the groom’s speech?
Please note: You don’t have to force it if you can’t recall funny memories, just stick to what you have.
Having jotted down answers as you could to those questions, just try to write a rough draft of your wedding speech. You can always go back to refine it until it comes out just as you want it.
Now, let’s go on to see
How To Write The Concluding Remarks of Your Father of The Groom Speech
Once again, here are excerpts to help us accomplish our writing goals.
‘’ So, my advice to you both is to always date each other and be each other’s keeper. By doing so, you will rekindle the spark in your marriage and enjoy your special love together. God bless you and I wish you the very best in all your endeavors. ‘’
Your closing remarks are just as equally as important as your introductory statement because it’s usually the part of your speech that will stay in their minds like the first time you went on a date with that special person in your life.
So, how can you make it happen? It sounds simple enough. Now, I am going to show you a few simple ideas you can use to close strong.
First, you can end with a simple piece of advice as you saw just right above the lines above.
Second, you may use a few quotes to enrich your message. Below are just but a few.
Quote #1: “Compromise, communicate, and never go to bed angry - the three pieces of advice gifted and regifted to all newlyweds.”
― Gillian Flynn, Gone Girl
Quote #2: “Love is a vessel that contains both security and adventure, and commitment offers one of the great luxuries of life: time. Marriage is not the end of romance, it is the beginning.”
― Esther Perel, Mating in Captivity: Reconciling the Erotic and the Domestic
Quote #3: “Most of a husband’s life is spent in doing research on his wife.”
― Pawan Mishra, Coinman: An Untold Conspiracy
Third, you can write a faith-based piece of advice with words from the Bible or any good piece of religious literature.
Here are some good bible verses you can use to jazz up your closing thoughts.
- There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. We love him because he first loved us. 1 John 4: 18-19
- Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers a multitude of sins. 1 Peter 4:8
- And now these three remain faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love. 1 Corinthians 13:13
Fourth, you can compare how they both look like to something that's well known to inspire laughter.
For example, you can say that the couple is a lot like Tom and Jerry.
That can become:
I absolutely love the fact that Dan and Linda are like Tom and Jerry who just can’t live without each other.
Their differences seem obvious, but I admire how they seem to be on the same page when they are bent on accomplishing a goal. They remind me of the proverbial couple who sets goals together and work together to make their dreams come true.
As I said in the beginning, your father of the groom speech shouldn’t be funny from the start of your script to the end.
So, you should strike a fair balance between humor and any other speech style you intend to use.
P.S: Most dads do this...Have you considered it? Want to write and give a great wedding speech like the one above but can't seem to get started because you don't know the exact words to use?
Or not too sure if what you intend writing will be well received by the guests?
