Groom Rehearsal Dinner Speech: How This Short Example Can Easily Help You Write An Amazing Groom's Rehearsal Dinner Toast

Looking forward to writing the best ever groom rehearsal dinner speech toast? But can’t seem to get started?

Please you don’t have to worry because I am going to share ideas and tips and samples you need to know so you can write a very heartfelt groom rehearsal dinner wedding speech for the bride.

M6 (1)

Before we do, there are a few things you need to get right before you even put together your scrambled thoughts and ideas together to say something about the bride on the eve of your wedding day.

This Holds The Key To A Wonderful Speech

First and foremost, you really have to calm your nerves or develop a positive mental attitude before you sit down to write your groom’s rehearsal dinner toast.

It doesn’t matter if you consider yourself a horrible writer or speaker, you can still make a difference by constantly focusing on what to say and how to say it with poise, confidence, and flair.

Most grooms become so fixated on their past speaking failures that they tend to doubt if they can turn things around and do their wives proud.

It gets very intimidating if you have a poor track record of speaking in public or you're not so good with words.

That self-awareness could magnify your fears and set you up for failure if you don’t dwell on the brighter side of things. The fact you got humiliated when you last made a presentation doesn't in any mean that you are not going to survive this one too.

Groom rehearsal dinner speech examples

You see, from time to time, memories of your past speaking failures would come back to haunt and remind you of your insecurities.

But, you have got to pay no heed to that nagging voice because you are endowed with the gift of ''recovery.'' ''Recovery'' in the sense that you can start all over again even if you have failed countless times. So, please don’t fear!

Just plan something out and keep saying to yourself that you can make your wife and family and friends proud with your groom’s rehearsal dinner toast. I believe in you and I know you can make it.

After getting mentally alert, you have to turn your attention to getting the right ideas for your groom speech, and wedding samples that can help you in this regard.

There are actually two kinds of examples (video and written) that can inspire you to come up with something unique and memorable. Watching video speech examples complement written groom speech examples. They have similar values and structures. The former actually enables you to write the latter.

Having said that, let us look at two groom rehearsal dinner speech videos you can watch to give you an idea of what to expect before you write your speech for the bride.

There are several examples on youtube.com you can watch and learn from to help you put your thoughts down on paper. But I have specifically chosen the ones below due to their sentimental and humorous nature.

So, please go grab your pen and journal and write down ideas that you find handy as you watch both clips.

Well, I enjoyed watching both clips and I hope you did too? At this point, I want to show a well-written piece.

So, here it is...

A Groom Rehearsal Dinner Speech Example You Can Study To Inspire Your Own Creative Writing

Good evening and I am so happy to see you all here on the eve of our wedding. What a joy it is to see Anita and I surrounded by loving family and friends.

I thought of not saying. But I understand there are some professional wedding here with us tonight. So, for those of you who don't know me, I am Mike and that’s my soon-to-be bride Alice. She is actually my first and last girlfriend.

Once in a while, right in the middle of an ordinary life, love binds two lives and hearts together and makes them feel a sense of completeness.

That’s exactly what Alice and I have experienced since we met and became best friends.

When I first met her two years ago at Manly Beach, I knew that I had found the most perfect woman ever who touched all of my senses and fill every corner of my heart.

We clicked right off the bat and I vividly recall how I looked into her eyes that evening and said I’ll look after her. As our friendship blossomed, we found out we had a lot of common interests and shared similar goals, dreams, and aspirations.

We both loved to drive the same cars and support the same football team! I still remember how she would come over to watch me play and yell get off him whenever I got tackled!  We also liked dressing the same.

If I was wearing blue jeans and a white shirt, she would be wearing the same thing---just different shoes.  The good thing is she’s just like a girl version of me!

By the way, I really enjoyed every minute spent with her as she’s very loving, polite, caring, and supportive and I know for sure that she will be an amazing wife and mom.

They say you don’t marry someone you can live with-you marry the person who you can’t live without and I think that sums us up perfectly why I couldn’t imagine her not being part of my life forever.

But I had to convince her of that fact; and as you might imagine, that is no easy feat for most guys! Yes, I can tell you for a fact that it’s not an easy thing at all!

But I plucked up the courage and took her to Port Mac where I popped the question.

Groom rehearsal dinner speech

My heart was beating so fast as I got down on one knee. So, when she agreed to marry me.  I felt like a sprinter who has won an Olympics gold medal in record time!

Alice, It feels like only yesterday when I looked into your eyes and said I’ll look after you.

Little did I know we will come thus far. Scripture tells us that true love is kind, patient, not self-seeking, and it always protects, always trusts, hopes, and perseveres.

As a matter of fact, you’re a pure, absolute embodiment of that true love!  There have been many moments when we’ve both been hit with challenges that seem like a mountain---tall and steep---with no end in sight and no relief coming our way.

But you stood by me, supported and encouraged me as she believed with your whole heart that it would take an eternity to break us!

Today, however, the happiness that we share together is incomparable to any other thing we’ve ever been through.

I’m completely overwhelmed at how amazing you look today, and can’t believe how privileged I am that you’ve chosen to be my wife.

I know now stronger than ever that I want to spend the rest of my life with you. I can imagine us growing old together still madly in love and that fills me with unspeakable delight.

Thank you for agreeing to marry me and making me feel loved and complete in every respect. From tomorrow until the end of time, I promise to love you, still look after you and make sure the beautiful smile on your face lasts for the rest of our lives together!

Ladies and gentlemen, I would like you to join me in toasting family and friends and especially, Alice for making me the happiest man ever!

Alice, I love you today, I will love you tomorrow and forever.

M5

I hope you learned a thing or two from that sample. By the way, let’s look closely at what went into writing that short groom’s rehearsal dinner speech example.

If you study it carefully, you will notice that there are three parts to it: introduction, body, and conclusion.

Your introduction is the first part of your speech and it comprises the following elements: expression of gratitude and a great opener that will capture the attention of the audience.

Let me ask you this simple question? Which persons do you want to say thank you to? You can include your mom and dad, your father and mother-in-law, your own siblings, friends, aunts, uncles, and so on.

If you plan to make a bride and groom rehearsal dinner speech, you can take turns thanking your parents and other people who have been very supportive your whole life.

Action Tip: Grab your pen and your note pad and put on your creative thinking cap and write down the names of people you would like to express gratitude to.

Here are a couple of examples:

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our parents for their support and for being there for me since day 1.

Finally, I would like to thank my wife for agreeing to marry me and for making me the happiest man in the world.

Unfortunately, it’s not been possible to have everyone we love here with us today, but we know they’re here with us in spirit and they’re not only in our thoughts today, but more importantly, they’re with us in our hearts.

After thanking those who have supported you, then you can start with a bang.

You see, a great opening remark will not only hook the guests in but also break the ice and put you on the path to success.

Sadly, however, most groom’s don't start too well and I am sure they have grown accustomed to hearing the cliché: ‘’ We first met…’’ over and over again.

There’s nothing wrong with that. But I always advocate that grooms inject some fun or creativity into this crucial part of their rehearsal dinner toast.

If you are wondering how to go about it, then I am beyond excited to share a couple of tips with you.

First, if you don’t want to mess with this, you can simply start with that well-worn phrase: ‘’ Anita and I first met when we were in our junior year in college’’

Second, you can start with a compare and contrast case scenario. What do you I mean? Great you have asked this question!

It is where you basically mention what you love to do and what your life was like before you met your bride.

For example:

Once upon a time, there was this young man who loved being alone. When he was driving, he was alone. When his favorite soccer team was playing, he drove them alone. I think  being alone was something innate because I was the only child and I really had no one to talk to and confide in when parents were out of the house.

This continued well into college when I heard someone say that men who don’t talk are like oranges. I kept thinking about it for a long time and wanted to find out who came up with that cute quote as  I thought it was in one of the books.

When my buddy told me that Alice was the author, I was a bit skeptical because I never thought her mind could process something sweet like that.

On my birthday, she and her friends joined us and I so much enjoyed her warm presence that I felt she might be a wonderful friend since I was always looking to make friends with a lady who was a chatterbox as I badly wanted to get rid of this undesirable aspect of me for good.

I can go and on. But did you see how I can compare his life before college to when the groom met his future wife?

Again, you can start with quotes above love as I indicated in the earlier example: Once in a while, right in the middle of an ordinary life, love binds two lives and hearts together and makes them feel a sense of completeness.

If you wish to do that, you may use one of the following quotes or witty lines about love.

"Love unlocks doors and opens windows that weren't even there before."- Helen Rowland

''Falling in love consists merely in uncorking the imagination and bottling the common sense."- Mandy Hale

"Don't ignore the love you do have in your life by focusing on the love you don't."- Charles du Bos

"Love does not care to define and is never in a hurry to do so."- Criss Jami

"Love may be harder to find in some people, but when they do love you know it must be something marvelous."- Timothy Oliveira

I guess you will have no trouble at all using those quotes to come up with something short and sweet.

Now, let us see...

How To Write The Content or Structure Of Your Groom’s Rehearsal Dinner Toast

Once again, let us cull parts of our template we are reviewing to help us get an idea of what to say.

‘’ We clicked right off the bat and I vividly recall how I looked into her eyes that evening and said I’ll look after her.

If I was wearing blue jeans and a white shirt, she would be wearing the same thing---just different shoes….  ‘’

As you can see, the body or the content of your message is a natural progression of the story in the opening remarks.

This part is fairly easy to write because it basically recounts the time you and the bride have spent together.

Nonetheless, so many grooms just narrate their stories without making them heartfelt or funny.

The reason is that their stories don’t revolve around any specific theme or style. That in essence separates great speeches from ordinary ones.

So, my advice to you is to first pick a style and then a theme for your speech before you write it. You can choose from any of these styles: poetic, rhythmic, funny, sentimental, or storytelling.

Pick something that best reflects who you are. For example, if you are a funny person, then you can lean towards that. If you are not known for that, you can choose a combination of two or more styles which is what most people go for.

Having picked your preferred style, you then go want to pick a theme that can be derived from your stories about when you met until you got on one knee.

So, please pick a pen and notepad and provide answers to the following questions:

  • Where did you first meet the bride?
  • How did both of you meet?
  • What was the first encounter or outing like?
  • How did your relationship evolve as the years went by?
  • When did you become so sure she was the one you are going to spend the rest of your life with?
  • Why do you really love and adore the bride?
  • What do both of you have in common?
  • What you envision your future to be like?
  • What are your words of commitment or promise to her?

If you are not going to make a speech at the wedding reception, then you can use all of the ideas above to write your groom's speech

If you are making a groom speech at both venues: the night of your rehearsal dinner and at the reception, you can split up the ideas above so your toast becomes unique on each occasion.

After you have provided answers to the above questions, write a rough draft. You don’t have to worry about how it initially looks because you can always go back to review it.

I know that a disturbing question most grooms ponder is this: how long should my rehearsal dinner speech be?

How to write your groom rehearsal dinner toast

It all depends on you since there is no right and wrong answer to that question. Most people are of the view that it should be short and sweet. Oh my goodness, I wish all groom speeches could be as sweet as honey and short like our stay on earth since there may be other speakers wanting to say a word or two.

But as you are pretty aware, not everyone can do that. So, I always recommend doing something you are comfortable with.  If you are bent on giving a long speech, please go for it.

But make sure it’s worth your listener’s time and attention. I have personally heard and written much longer speeches which were a hit even though the speakers initially objected to it because it went beyond the allotted time.

To cut a long debate short, you can go for something long or short, but make sure it’s engaging enough, or else you will just drag on without saying anything meaningful.

Now, let us see

How To Write The Conclusion Or Ending Of Your Groom’s Rehearsal Dinner Speech

Let us go back and take some excerpts of our example to get our creative juices flowing.

‘’ Alice, It feels like only yesterday when I looked into your eyes and said I’ll look after you.

Little did I know we will come thus far.

Scripture tells us that true love is kind, patient, not self-seeking, and it always protects, always trusts, hopes, and perseveres.

As a matter of fact, you’re a pure, absolute embodiment of that true love!

There have been many moments when we’ve both been hit with challenges that seem like a mountain---tall and steep---with no end in sight and no relief coming our way.’’

The closing remarks are as important as your opening remarks because that’s what will stick in the minds of your friends and family for a long time to come.

Below are some practical and time-tested ideas you can use to end with a bang.

First, you can share why you really love the bride.

Second, you can share what you look forward to as you build your lives together.

Third, you can close with a prayer if you are a deeply religious person or a Christian.

Here are some bible verses or scripture you can use.

Proverbs 18: 22- He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the LORD.

James 1:17

17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

Ephesians 5:25-33

King James Version

25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,

27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.

29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:

30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.

31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.

32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.

33 Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.

Fourth, you can honor the bride by giving her a special gift. I have yet to see a groom who has publicly done that on a wedding day or rehearsal dinner night.

Additionally, you can wax poetic. You can use the lyrics of a poem or make up one by yourself.

I found this beautiful poem by Steven Reiser.

To my bride, I give you my heart

Sharing love each day from the very start

To my bride, I give you my kiss

Filling each day with joy and bliss

To my bride, I give you my being

To love, to play, to love and to sing

To my bride, I give you my mind

Learning each day to be more kind

Wow…I wish I knew who this great poet was! My search didn’t yield any results.

Finally, you may use quotes from the movies to enrich your message.  You may tweak any of these quotes to suit your case.

Rachel Getting Married

"All that I ever wanted was to just hear music, and when I met you, I heard you. And, Rachel, you're the most beautiful thing I've ever heard. Thank you for marrying me." - Sidney Williams

Punch-Drunk Love

"I have love in my life. It makes me stronger than anything you can imagine." - Barry Egan

The Lord of the Rings

"I would rather share one lifetime with you than face all the ages of this world alone." – Arwen Undómiel

Emma

"Maybe it is our imperfections which make us so perfect for one another." - Mr. Knightley

Annie Hall

"Love is too weak a word for what I feel. I lurve you, you know, I loave you, I luff you." - Alvy Singer

This last quote can actually help you write a funny groom rehearsal dinner speech.
