But first, this is the background story.

When Mark met Joanne, they clicked right off the bat and we got married after dating for 2 years.

But she died just 1 year after we had tied the knot. Joanne died in a plane crash when she and her coworkers were flying back home from a business trip to Puerto Rico.

Father of the bride speech example

Their faulty plane burst into flame and fell into the ocean and that left her surviving spouse very devastated.

Three years later, Mark met Christina whom she later got married to.

They shared a lot of things in common and we were best friends. But they didn’t have children despite being married for almost 5 years!

Several tests confirmed that they had no problem with her fertility and that left them wondering what was really going on.

They were the only couple in their families without children. But they still prayed and hoped for a miracle someday!

One Day Something Happened!

On a cold afternoon in July, Christina returned home from work feeling unwell. So, they went to see the doctor the following day.

A month later, medical examinations revealed she was pregnant for 3 months!  Having been pregnant for almost 12 months, she delivered a bouncing baby girl. Days flew by and she began to grow so beautifully into a creative, intelligent, and athletic little girl.

When she reached her teens, she loved to horse race and even joined the polo club where she won a lot of medals for being the best horse rider in her community and went on to represent her state in a national tournament.

After she had graduated from college, she was invited to a major tournament in The United Kingdom and she had to train every morning. It was at this same time that she and Kerry were planning to get married.

It was just left with a few months to her wedding when she fell off her horse while she was competing at the London event.

She, however, got back on her feet after minor surgery and still won the competition and made her parents so proud!

Wedding Plans Put On Hold

Two weeks after that tournament, she started using a walking stick. Apparently, the fall had kind of paralyzed her left leg and she had to go undergo surgery. Well, it was successful and she got her energy and vitality back after a year!

A New Beginning!

Her wedding preparations got underway after her total recovery and she asked her father, Mark, to give a father of the bride speech!

Mark read a lot online but just didn’t know how to put down my exact thoughts and emotions and he wanted to make the speech very unique by sharing what they went through as a family.

Luckily, someone came to his rescue but he was still nervous and when called up to speak the room was dead silent.

After breathing out loudly, he began to speak and these were his words….

Please read the father of the bride speech example below carefully as we will look at it in more detail.

Thank you and welcome everyone. For those of you that don’t know me, I am Mark and am the proud father of the bride.

''Once upon a time, on a snowy morning, a charming young princess made an entry into this world.

Filled with pride and joy, his dad was determined to love her and give him everything he would ever need so that she would become a great person someday.

She loved to play with cats, dogs, and other animals. She even made a pond in her family garage for a lonely snapping turtle she and her brothers found when they were out there on their bikes.

She was generous to a fault and he’d sometimes give out all he had to those who were in need even if that meant stripping herself of her personal comfort and pleasure.

When she was just 10, he made $150 caddying golf. But she gave it all away to a neighbor.

Just like any other heroine, she too was determined to leave her footprints behind and that could only be accomplished through sports seeing she was a big polo fan who helped win trophies for her town.

Winning trophy after trophy swelled our hearts with pride and joy. But, one day something happened to her when competed in a horse riding competition in the U. K.

She fell off her horse.

We thought she was going to finish last in that race but we jumped right back on her horse and took the crown when that event ended.

When we returned home, She said to me…'' Dad, I have had enough of that. So, she quit horse riding.''

Instead, she traveled to Ukraine where she helped build an orphanage and raise funds to put teenage children back to school.''

As he said those words, people cast surprising glances at one another and that made everyone look sad. Then he continued

''Like every great heroine, Sarah suffered some setbacks and adversities at some point in his life.

But, she always pressed on because she was and still of the view that there’s always going to be light at the end of every dark tunnel.

Sarah, I think of a great heroine as someone who understands the degree of responsibility that comes with his freedom of choice.

Choosing to get married is certainly not an easy decision but one fraught with a keen sense of responsibility and accountability.

But, you don’t have anything to fear because you have God and Kerry by your side to help you in your quest to becoming that great wife and mom we’re all hoping for.

Kerry, you are a great guy and I’d like to welcome you to our motley crew. I'd like to thank your parents(Ben and Lisa)for their kindness and support.

Sarah & Kerry,  a lot of people think that the greatest heroes of our time are those folks who have accomplished many great things.

That might be true to an extent but I think real heroes are those who spent much of their time loving each other till the end of time.

A heart filled with unconditional love will help you forgive each other when you step on each other's toes.

A heart filled with unconditional love would make your family strong and it will open your eyes to marriage’s true purpose.

Don’t expect everything to be perfect though because the course of true love never ever runs smooth. Never ever forget that. God bless you both.

When Mark was done speaking, the guests leaped onto their feet and gave him a warm round of applause for five minutes amid chanting and screaming out loud.

They just couldn’t believe how he did that.

Let me ask you once again: Can you really craft a short beautiful father of the bride's speech as he did with the help of that template? Yes, you can.

How? Please stay with me as I am going to share with you what went into writing this short and sweet sample and how you can effortlessly put down your random thoughts into a speech that will make your daughter and son-in-law so proud of you.

Why You Might Fail-And What To Do Instead

Before we do, I want you to get this right since it’s the bedrock of your success.

What plagues most dads when they write to me is how to put up splendid performances without embarrassing their daughters.

Well, I totally understand their concerns and fears and I always do my best to help those I can.  I can only attribute their fear of failure to

  • Fear of the unknown
  • Fear of past failures coming back to haunt them

You might a little nervous because of those reasons and more. It gets particularly daunting if you’re someone who hates speaking before a crowd or you know deep down in your heart that your performance at your child's wedding sometime back wasn’t so impressive.

Can you please forget about all that and let your sense of optimism shine through this time. I believe you’re destined for success so just ignore that little nagging voice that seems to spook you.

Having said that, let’s look at...

The Proven Tool That Helped Mark Come Up With That I Use All the Time and I Recommend You Use It Too

Father of the bride speech samples has proven over and over again to be the antidote to all your speech worries.

They help get rid of the guesswork and the worries that come with saying something touching about your daughter. However, if you don’t use it well, it can be a real drawback.

There are many of those examples online. But I found out that great videos like those below are beneficial if you need some dose of inspiration.

I sometimes watch them before scribbling a few ideas, so this is what I recommend you do before writing...so

  1. please go get your pen and a writing pad
  2. Next press the play button of the video below and jot down ideas, words, and phrases you feel you can use for your own script.

Ok, let’s now go back and look at the structure of Mark’s speech as that can be very useful in producing a sweet and meaningful speech for your daughter.

The structure of that speech comprises the introduction, body, and conclusion.

Now, let’s re-cap portions of that introduction

Thank you and welcome everyone. For those of you that don’t know me, I am Mark and am the proud father of the bride.

  • The introduction should reiterate who you are and your relationship to the bridal couple as you’ve seen above.

  • It is also a fine opportunity to flatter the audience and to thank them for attending the wedding celebration.

  • You can also use it to thank people who have played a crucial role in your daughter’s upbringing. People like her mom or your wife, grandfather, and grandmother, uncles, and aunts as well as the parents of the groom.

Closely connected to the opening remarks is an attention grabber that will make the audience want to listen to you since most fathers of the bride speeches are as boring as jokes gone bad.

Let’s see how Mark began his by re-looking at it.

''Once upon a time, on a snowy morning, a charming young princess made an entry into this world.

Filled with pride and joy, his dad was determined to love her and give him everything he would ever need so that she would become a great person someday.''

After introducing yourself and greeting the audience, you have to engage the attention of the audience right from the start.

Your speech should be unique and there are so many creative ways of coming up with an introduction that will make their ears perk up and hang on to every word you say.

Did you see that? First, you can share how you felt when your daughter was born as we saw in that extract.

Second, you can begin with any of these profound quotes.

  • ''There are two important events in every woman’s life…when she’s born and when she gets married.''

  • ''The happiest moment of my life was probably when my daughter was born.''—David Duchovny

  • ''A good father will leave his imprint on his daughter for the rest of her life.'' –  James Dobson

Let me use quote # 1 ''There are two important events in every woman’s life…when she’s born and when she gets married.'' to write something brief so you can get an idea of how things work.

There are two very significant days in every person’s life and that person is born and eventually gets married to the love of their lives.

23 years ago, I was the proudest father when my only daughter came into our lives and now she’s grown into an adorable daughter and ready to embark on the next chapter of her life.

Now, let me ask you this: Don’t you think starting with that quote will make you sound smarter?

Moreover, you can start with any of these jokes or punch lines if you want to really come up with something hilarious.

  • ''Being a good husband is like being a stand-up comic. You need ten years before you can call yourself a beginner.'' —Jerry Seinfeld

  • ''Before you marry a person you should first make them use a computer with slow Internet to see who they are.''– Will Ferrell

  • ''Don’t marry for money; you can borrow it cheaper'' – Scottish Proverb

Now, let’s see how to write the outline of your wedding speech. As we always do, let’s recap parts of the body before we get started.

Father speech for daughter

She loved to play with cats, dogs, and other animals. She even made a pond in her family garage for a lonely snapping turtle she and her brothers found when they were out there on their bikes.

She was generous to a fault and he’d sometimes give out all he had to those who were in need even if that meant stripping herself of her personal comfort and pleasure…

The body is the part that hooks the audience and paints a picture in their mind’s eye when she was growing up.

Here’s what to include in this part and what not to include based on the example we are looking at.

  • What your daughter was like when she was a little girl
  • What memorable event can you use to spiff up your speech?
  • Any funny memories you really want to share?
  • How did you feel when she told you about your son-in-law?
  • Welcome your son-in-law formally into your family and thank his parents

Here are some important facts you should know when writing the body of your speech.

  • Don’t talk about her ex-relationships and if this is her second marriage, please don’t talk about it…. Why? That might embarrass her since your in-laws and others might not know what or even who caused the separation

  • Don’t cast your son-in-law in a bad light if you think your daughter didn’t make a great choice

  • In effect, don’t talk about anything that will offend her…It is her big day and it’s best to stick to the good stories.

Now, grab a pen and give it (that example) a second or even a third look, and identify how it was written and also put down any idea that comes to you. A final observation will not be a bad idea at all.

Afterward, get a theme for your own speech.

The theme is basically what your delivery will be all about.

I have written speeches on themes like achievement, love, and compassion for others.

While most dads don’t mind asking me to add feats chalked by their daughters (scholarly or sports), they always ask me to share their beautiful qualities like

  • Love and compassion
  • Perseverance and persistence
  • Fun and hilarity
  • Making a difference in the life of others
  • Being there for the family at all times

So, cast your mind back to what the years have been like and write down what really makes your daughter a unique person.

How To Put Your Thoughts Together To Form A Beautiful Speech

Having listed as many points as you can plus some stories about your daughter, you can start writing.

Just write whatever is on your mind without worrying about the flow because you can always go back to re-frame your thoughts or even clean up your draft later.

Deciding to make your speech long or short depends on your storyline outline but make sure it’s interesting and that your speech doesn’t go beyond the allotted time unless it's very entertaining.

A Few Key Points (Below) To Note As You Put Your Words Together

As you work on your speech, you have to write in your own voice or style without borrowing from the example you have got. Again, your choice of words should be a reflection of your personal demeanor and not based on sentimentalism or on the opinion of others.

No matter how eloquent you are or your intellectual capabilities, you shouldn’t use big words in such endeavors as they break the rhythm, flow, and understanding of your speech.

Use simple easy to understand phrases and words and your audience will enjoy every bit of it.

Just Follow This Plan And You Will Finish Strong

Let’s go on to how to end memorable since your closing remarks will be implanted in the minds of your listeners for some time to come.

Once again, here are excerpts of it to guide us every step of the way.

Sarah & Kerry, a lot of people think that the greatest heroes of our time are those folks who have accomplished many great things.

That might be true to an extent but I think real heroes are those who spent much of their time loving each other till the end of time…

Hope that gives you an idea! Again, I want to make things fairly easy for you so I am happy to share with you some proven ideas for wrapping up very quickly and memorably.

First, touching poems like the one below can go a long way towards enriching your speech. But, you have got to use it creatively. Let's illustrate with Johnson's ''Beauty that is never old''

BEAUTY THAT IS NEVER OLD” BY JAMES WELDON JOHNSON

When buffeted and beaten by life’s storms,
When by the bitter cares of life oppressed,
I want no surer haven than your arms,
I want no sweeter heaven than your breast.

When over my life’s way there falls the blight
Of sunless days, and nights of starless skies;
Enough for me, the calm and steadfast light
That softly shines within your loving eyes.

The world, for me, and all the world can hold
Is circled by your arms; for me there lies,
Within the lights and shadows of your eyes,
The only beauty that is never old.

From that, we can get these nuggets of wisdom or advice…

When buffeted and beaten by the storms of married life oppressed, always remember your vows and continue to love each other and you will grow strong in love and create memories that will always fill your hearts with joy.

Are you a Christian or a very religious person? If so, you can finish strong with a verse from the bible you really love.

This well-known verse always comes to mind

1 Corinthians 13 1

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy; it does not boast; it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.

Here’s an example based on that scripture

As you may know, every relationship, particularly the marriage journey has its ups and downs.  That’s why scripture reminds us that true love is kind, patient, not self-seeking, and it always protects, always trusts, hopes, and perseveres. So, in your walk together, always love each other by being patient, forgiving…

Did you notice how I wrote those lines from that bible quotation?
