Farewell-3258939_960_720

In this revealing piece, we looked at where and how to get beautiful ideas and words to help you thank, motivate, or inspire, counsel your co-workers or colleagues before you say goodbye.

In that example, I told you that one of the trusted resources you can ever use to say whatever is on your heart without pulling out your hair was farewell speech samples. Do you remember that? Thank God for farewell speech examples!

Like I said earlier, you can put the blame of workers who can’t write good speeches because not everyone has the skill or talent for that exercise.

However, I believe we all can make our world a much better place with whatever thing we have.

And for me, what I can best do to help you is to show you how best you can use a short farewell speech to write your own speech in a very unique way since I have been writing speeches for people all over the world.

Get This Right!

You just can’t wing it and give a boring speech!

It’s your last day at work and as you know, you have to leave on a memorable note and your speech can make that a reality.

Go grab your paper and pen and put on your thinking cap and let’s get to work. Are you ready for this?

Here’s the example in its entirety

A Short and Funny Farewell Speech

''Most people are nervous to meet Ted Koppel. I know I was. When I finally worked up the nerve to say hello, I confidently stuck out my hand and introduced myself.

I then promptly took a step forward and caught my foot on an open file cabinet drawer, which sent me plummeting to the ground. (pause) It took me a good two weeks to get past that humiliation.

When I did, I quickly learned that this was a place that offered endless opportunities to a young staffer, far more than I had earned.

You were open to my story ideas, welcomed me into edit rooms, sent me on video shoots, and gave me the opportunity to make some very public mistakes.

People know Nightline is a great show, but they probably don’t know how great its staff is at making a young, aspiring journalist feel like a fully initiated part of the team.

My mother tells me that my grandfather never missed a Nightline. He died in 1982, when I was nine-years-old and when Nightline was only two.

To this day, every night when I hear that opening theme music, I think of him, and how proud he would have been to know that his grandson worked here, with all of you. Thank you.''

FAREWELL sample 1 (1)

Ok, I don’t want this to be so hard for you, so let’s break it down and use the lessons learned to write your own speech.

First and foremost,

Let’s See What Will Grab Your  Audience’s Attention

Guess what? Your introduction should capture attention right off the bat. What that means is you have to put in a lot of effort to make it work.

Just look at this example in red.

“Most people are nervous to meet Ted Koppel. I know I was. When I finally worked up the nerve to say hello, I confidently stuck out my hand and introduced myself.

I then promptly took a step forward and caught my foot on an open file cabinet drawer, which sent me plummeting to the ground.

The above example is without a doubt a brilliant opener.

But can you spot any weakness in the opening line?

You have just 2 minutes to point it out!

Remember, we are in the farewell speech university and you’ll have your degree soon.

Time up! No answer? Do you really want to have your degree? Okay, let me help you out.

This writer should have first found out if all those present at the party knew who he was.

And that’s a mistake I see a lot of speakers make especially if they are working in a very big firm.

That will not be a problem if you work in an establishment where you relate to one another like family! I don’t think that was the case here though!

If I were him, I would have asked myself just two questions

  1. Am I very well known in this organization?
  2. Are there any new employees?

Questions 1 & 2 might not be too useful if you are the boss.

If the answer to question number 2 does not form a part of your farewell speech, new employees might be wondering who you are.

Now, let’s see how I would have turned things around if I had written that earlier example below.

Hello and welcome everyone. Good evening, for those who came to join us last week, I am Daniel Jenkins, and I am ex-president of the Manufacturing Division of Baker& Beans Co.

Did you notice how I introduced myself? Sorry, I forgot to tell you one thing.

Other than your name, you should always greet your audience. Never ever forget that it's another way of connecting with them on a personal level.

Did you there are other proven ways of starting your message with a bang?

Wondering how? See them below

Here Are Some Proven Ways To Do Just That

First, you can begin with a short story about what you experienced when you first starting working.

This writer does that skillfully.

''Most people are nervous to meet Ted Koppel. I know I was. When I finally worked up the nerve to say hello, I confidently stuck out my hand and introduced myself.

I then promptly took a step forward and caught my foot on an open file cabinet drawer, which sent me plummeting to the ground.''

Second, you can share a funny quote and tie its message with memories of your first day at work!

Third, if you have ever seen any good or interesting movie whose theme centers around the workplace, you can draw some ideas from that too.

Fourth, others decide to thank a few people and briefly how they contributed to making their working or professional or even personal life fulfilling.

Farewell speech samples 919071_960_720

Let’s see how this is done by looking at this creative example. Let’s call colleague number 3 Mike.

@ Colleague 3(Mike): Your pics are hot, your work is not - and don't let anyone fool u otherwise! Just kidding... keep the bandana on - it prevents people from knowing how much hair is missing!

Never mind Mike. That means you will be the next C.E.O. since you work like a tireless horse!

Note: If you’re going to say something similar, make sure your friend or collegaues won’t be offended. All depends on how close you are though.

Fourth, you can share how someone who left inspired you and use that experience to start your own speech.

Now, let’s see an example of that idea in action based on Brandon Otten’s Farewell to Arms: My Air Force Retirement Speech

''Over the course of the last 20 years, I have thrown my body, mind, and my heart into getting the job done. My experiences over the last 20 years taught me a great many things. I’d like to share some of that with you today.

For example, the words that CMSgt Tony Klingensmith shared at his retirement ceremony back in 1997 inspired me as a young Airman; he said: “I used to clean the bathrooms in this very same building; I always prided myself on having the cleanest shitters. No matter what task I was doing, I tried to do it the best I could” he said.

The fact that the Chief cursed in his speech really got my attention. Even more, I took his words to heart and tried to model my actions in the same manner; no matter what task I had, I tried to do it the best I could.''

FAREWELL sample 2 (1)

Now, read this part meditatively: For example, the words that CMSgt Tony Klingensmith shared at his retirement ceremony back in 1997 inspired me as a young Airman; he said “I used to clean the bathrooms in this very same building; I always prided myself on having the cleanest shitters.’’

It's exactly what I am referring to in point number 4: Fourth, you can share how someone who left inspired you and use that experience to start your own speech.

There are just so many ways of starting your farewell speech to your colleagues or co-employees. Can you think of another way?

Using J…s can also help!

Can you fill the gaps above? Let me give you this clue. It’s a five-letter word.

Who said jokes? Is that you? Well done! I am so so proud of you!

Funny lines can help but make sure you find a better way to connect its theme or message to your speech or it will backfire.

We Better Get Back To Our Example

This time, let us examine how the body of our sample speech was written

Let’s look it over carefully

''…get past that humiliation.

When I did, I quickly learned that this was a place that offered endless opportunities to a young staffer, far more than I had earned.

You were open to my story ideas, welcomed me into edit rooms, sent me on video shoots, and gave me the opportunity to make some very public mistakes.''

Now, let’s analyze the above. If you’ve been working at your current place for a very long time, then you obviously have lots of memories to share.

Handshake-733239_960_720

So put on your thinking cap and write down as many anecdotes that come to you.

If you don’t like to brainstorm, then…

The Pointers Below Can Help You Come Up With Great Ideas.

Idea number one:  Why did you decide to work at your current place of work?

Idea number two: How the experience was like when you joined the company in the beginning?

Idea number three: Any difficulties or challenges you faced and how you were able to overcome them?

Idea number four: Any name(names) who made your stay very memorable and how they impacted your life…?this should be easy as we have seen that for Brandon Otten above!

Idea number five: How did your work impact your life as a whole?

Idea number six: Any awards and citations you received (if any) and how they motivated you to reach for the sky?

Idea number seven: Thank everyone, give sound advice, and wish them well.

****Idea number seven: Let me add that if your colleagues see you more as a ''super-worker'' then you can share what your secrets are

And they will never forget you for that!

That’s basically the main stuff that goes into the body of the speech. There might be more though but it all depends on how creative you are. You shouldn’t say everything that has happened to you in the body else your speech will be long and boring!

Just bring out the relevant points and ignore the rest.

We are not done yet…Let’s march on

''People know Nightline is a great show, but they probably don’t know how great its staff is at making a young, aspiring journalist feel like a fully initiated part of the team.

Once again, did you notice how the writer mentions how he got onto the show and how helpful his co-workers were to him?

He even throws in a story about how his granddad enjoyed the work they are doing at the studio.

Finally, let’s see how the above example can inspire us to write our own short goodbye address before I kiss you goodbye!

Here is My Short Example!

I never knew I would get the change to be part of this great workforce who strives day and night to make the life of others better

I remember when my mom would take her migraine pill years ago. Though I was a little child, I was curious enough to read the drug cover and I noticed that this was the same firm that saved my mom’s life.

She’s still alive and came here with my family to say thank you for all the great work you are doing!

Wasn’t that good?

Do This And Your Team Will Never Ever Forget You!

Before you take your seat, you can present a gift to the company as a token of your appreciation.

It could be a work of art or anything that brings back golden memories.

After you’ve given your gift, wish your colleagues well and tell everyone that you hope to achieve or accomplish as you move on to a new place or on your retirement.
