There’s something special about finding a good friend who really values and cherishes you. Such friends are hard to find like diamonds.
And so, when you find such a friend, you have to love them back and do everything to make their lives much better than they could ever dream of!
I know for sure you have such a friend at your workplace. I know that person is about to move on and one of the ways you can show you care him or her is by giving a unique and heartfelt farewell speech.
Do you have the talent or skill for that?
Well, don’t worry because I am going to walk you through everything you have to know when it comes to writing a very good speech.
Before we do so, please...
You’ll Fail If You Still Do This
In this piece, I showed you how to get rid of mental demons if you want to succeed and I think you have to look at it again.
If you don’t, you might make mistakes and your friend and your entire department will never forget how you fared on at the farewell party.
You see, not only does having such examples make your writing much easier, but you can also model your message after them.
I love you so much and all I am looking for is that you do so well, so let’s quickly look at this example.
Ready? Go grab your pen and paper and put down ideas that come to you.
Thanks to Corinne Murphy for letting us have it.
Now, here’s the full transcript. Study it carefully.
''Today is a very sad day for us in the office as we have to say goodbye to our wonderful coworker. He/she has worked with us for a long time and has never let us down.
He/she has always been extremely professional, hard-working and a team player. He/she has a brilliant mind and always brought creative new ideas to the team.
He/she has not only been a fantastic colleague, he/she has also been a true friend. He/she always took the time to ask how his/her fellow colleagues were, always had time to listen, and talk to anybody with a problem and was great fun in the office.
He/she was always full of energy and happy to see everyone on Monday mornings.
He/she is a great loss to our company but we were lucky to have the opportunity to work with him/her.
We all wish you the very best in the future. I know that whatever the future holds, he/she will excel and continue to be successful.
We will miss you but this isn’t goodbye as we know you will keep in touch and we will see you sooner rather than later. Thank you for everything you have given to the company.''
What mark will you have given this suppose you were a speech critic?
5/10? 6/10? 7/10? If you gave the writer 5 or less, or even 6 or more, then congrats!
By the way, let’s break that example down and see what went into it and use the insights discovered to put down your exact thoughts and emotions into beautiful words.
First, let’s look at the opening lines once more.
''Today is a very sad day for us in the office as we have to say goodbye to our wonderful coworker. He/she has worked with us for a long time and has never let us down.''
Comments: There are so many things we can add to the above sentences to make it sparkle.
If you can tell me the main thing left out, I will write your farewell speech for you for free! Yes, I mean it.
You just have 10 seconds to do that!
First and foremost, let me say that the introduction of the writer’s message wasn’t so inspiring.
To make it sound very persuasive, the writer could have used any of the ideas below to begin his address.
If I were him or her, I would have asked myself just two questions:
- Am I very well known in this organization?
- Are there any new employees?
Questions number 1 & 2 might not be too useful if you are the boss. If the answer to question number 2: ''Are there any new employees?'' does not form a part of your farewell speech, then new employees might be wondering who you are!
So, it pays to survey your audience for new employees. If there aren't, then you should not re-introduce yourself.
Now, let’s see how I would have turned things around if I were this writer.
Read this carefully please.
''Hello and welcome everyone. Good evening, for those who came to join us last week, Danny Markins is the past president of the Manufacturing Division of Baker& Beans Co.''
Did you notice how I introduced myself? Sorry, I forgot to tell you one thing: Other than mentioning your name, you should always greet your audience.
Let me also tell you that there are also several ways of starting your speech with a bang! Got any idea what they are?
Ok…let me help you out. So,
…Here Are Some Proven Ways To Do Just That
- First, you can begin with a short story about what brought you together as friends or when your colleague first started working there or vice-versa.
- Second, you can share a funny quote and tie its theme to an incident at the office or your speech.
- Third, if you have ever seen any good or interesting movie whose theme centers around the workplace, you can draw some ideas from that and use it too.
- Next, others simply decide to thank the person they are addressing and talk about their contribution to their lives or even how he/she made the workplace fun and lively.
I want to give you an idea so let’s look at this example. Let’s call our colleague Jeremy.
''Jeremy is like the robot in the processing unit. He works so hard and I sometimes wonder if he has the heart of a horse...
...Well, I want to thank God you're leaving after 30 long years and it breaks my heart to see you move on because you've been a great friend...''
Can you use that in your own speech or even adapt it?
Also, you can share how his or her words and deeds inspired you to be a better worker! I think that should be easy.
Ok... Let’s continue from where we left from that earlier example
''… Today is a very sad day for us in the office as we have to say goodbye to our wonderful coworker....''
Here’s the continuation:
''He/she has worked with us for a long time and has never let us down...wonderful coworker..''
Ok, we all know he’s a wonderful ''co-worker''. But, ask yourself this question too:
- How many years has he been working at the firm?
Don’t you think that answer could have been a part of our introduction?
Now, let’s go back to the example we started with and see how we can connect that with the number of years he's been working there. Please see the underlined words below.
''Good afternoon everyone.
For those of you who joined ABC company Ltd last week, our wonderful colleague is Danny Markins.
Danny has been with us for 30 years and he’s proven to be the ''wall clock'' of the organization!
Here’s why he’s nicknamed Mr. Wall Clock. 15 years ago, the president of the United States visited us right here…''
Don’t you think you will capture attention if I go on to tell the other workers why Danny’s nicknamed '' the wall clock of the firm?''
Why Not Entertain With This?
Again, for your piece to sound very appealing you should lace it with good stories
Wondering how to get those stories? A minute please.
Sorry, I forgot about this-After your introduction, comes the body and it should comprise the following elements:
Idea number one: Any idea when your favorite worker came to work there? If he arrived before you did it, let your listeners know and how the experience was like.
Idea number two: Whar the experience was like you got to know him really well? Did you see him as a friend or brother or father or sister or..?
Idea number three: Talk about the circumstances or events or challenges that brought you together.
Remember to share those details as your audience will be very eager to hear that.
Idea number four: Mention how he/she impacted your life and how you became a better person or worker as a result!
Idea number five: Don’t forget to thank him/her for everything he’s/she’s done.
Idea number six: Do you have some stories to tell about his or her frustrations on the job in a light-hearted way?
Idea number seven: Why you will miss him or her?
Idea number eight: Any sound advice and well-wishes?
Idea number nine: Why don’t you let everyone know how much he or she means to you by giving him or her a personal gift! Remember, actions speak louder than words!
Well, it’s basically how to get good ideas for your storyline.
So, this is what I want you to do right now. Go back up this page and look at the seven ideas.
Now, piece something short together. Don’t worry about how it flows since you can always go back to edit what you wrote.
Here’s Corrine’s body…
''He/she has always been extremely professional, hard-working and a team player.
I know that whatever the future holds, he/she will excel and continue to be successful.''
If you read through the short piece above carefully, you would notice that most of the answers we got from answering those seven questions were used by Corrine's extract was written with answers to those nine ideas.
You better go back to them if you didn't notice them.
By the way, things would have been very entertaining if Corrine had painted a picture in our mental eyes instead of just telling.
Wondering what I mean exactly? Ok, let me illustrate.
She says that her friend had a brilliant mind, hardworking, professional conduct and ...
What if she had gone further to add reasons why he touted those admirable qualities? We would definitely have fallen in love with her choice of words if the writer had done that!
Ok…I really don't want you to struggle. So, let me show you how to do that.
Let’s look at these before and after write-ups to give a fair idea.
Corrine’s example: He/she has always been extremely professional, hard-working and a team player. He/she has a brilliant mind and always brought creative new ideas to the team.
Our version(you and me): He/she has not only been a delight to work with but he’s/she’s a friend that’s so hard to find like a four-leaf clover!
Did you notice how I used the simile above instead of touting her qualities using everyday language? That’s what I mean when I tell you to use words that paint a picture.
Let’s continue:
Corrine’s version: He/she always took the time to ask how his/her fellow colleagues were, always had time to listen, and talk to anybody with a problem and was great fun in the office. He/she was always full of energy and happy to see everyone on Monday mornings.
Our version:
He/she always took the time to ask to find out how his/her fellow colleagues and their families are doing. To me, he’s like an angel of peace.
She always had time to listen and talk to anybody with a problem, no matter small.
I remember when I fell off the third floor the other day….well, you all know the story so…
I experienced a severe backache months after surgery had been done, and when I confided in him, he gave me a Chinese balm that helped get back on my feet faster…Want to know what that balm is?
Most of you have been hearing about Chinese balm right here in this office and you have been asking me what it means.
I decided to keep it a secret because I wanted to tell you a nice story about that. You see, we began using it when Maria starting working here….
Did you see notice how I infuse a few details here and there to the original example? That’s how to bring life to your piece.
Please, see Corrine’s final remarks
''We will miss you but this isn’t goodbye as we know you will keep in touch and we will see you sooner rather than later. Thank you for everything you have given to the company.''
Hope you can do that too right? Or you still want me to help?

What do you think is the best gift a friend has ever given you?
You might not agree with me when I say words are the priceless gifts you’ve ever got from that special friend at your workplace.
