Christening or Baby Baptism Speech from Godmother or Godfather (Sponsor) to Godson or Goddaughter (Child)
Do you really have what it takes to write a unique, heartfelt and inspiring godparent christening speech without trying so hard?Just follow these proven ideas and you’ll be seconds away from saying something beautiful!
Let me ask you this: Who’s been the greatest influence in your life?
I believe that you are where you are today because God brought someone into your life to help you every step of the way.
I believe that God has blessed your little godchild with so many talents and abilities and you have to help him or her harness their potentials.
Just ask yourself, why did the little baby’s parents ask you to be his or her sponsor or godparent?
I probably think you are a good role model. So, you shouldn’t take that role lightly since God expects you and the parents of your godchild to love and cherish that beautiful gift.
That being said, as a godparent, you will be in touch with your godchild’s family for many years to come as you help support your godson or goddaughter every step of the way.
By the way, after the child has been baptized or christened, you might be asked to give a speech and as you can imagine, that can be quite nerve wracking if you are not well-prepared for it!
Although parents of the little child might tell you to prepare way ahead of time, it can still be so hard to find the right words and ideas.
When putting your ideas together, you have to make sure every word counts because words have so much power to influence the destiny of your godson or goddaughter.
Do you remember what scripture says concerning the use of the tongue?
It is either used to bless or curse (James 3:9)
So, you should try as much as possible to go for words that foretells of the child’s greatness in life!
The sad thing is not every one of us is that good with words and I think you agree wholeheartedly!
It’s for this reason I am right here this morning to help you not only find the right words and ideas, but also show you how best you can easily and quickly used them to write a short yet heartfelt christening or baptism speech for your godchild!
Before we do that though, please get this right if you want to succeed!
Get Rid Of This As Soon As You Can!
I don’t know about you…but did you know most people feel very nervous when they are called to address an audience?
This happens not just once, but from time to time.
It’s not because these folks lack experience---far from it.
Guess what? It’s because their minds dwell on past experiences. You might have failed to give impressive speeches in the past and you’re probably thinking if you can make it successfully this time around too!
Yes, you can! Yes, you can if you ignore that little nudging voice which keeps reminding you of your past speaking failures!
Just have a different mental attitude this time.
All you have to do to calm your nerves is to hold this positive mental image continuously.
As you do that, you will be equipping your spirit or inner man with the power to overcome this tortuous ordeal.
As you keep on doing so repeatedly, your nerves will calm down and you will be in a firm position to speak with purpose, poise and power!
Having said that, go grab your pen and paper and let’s now look at some creative ways to coming up with your own ideas.
To come up with great thoughts, you…
First See What Others Have Done
I wonder why so many godfathers or godmothers worry about not knowing how and where to start from.
To overcome this dilemma, all you have to do is go check out a few videos on any of the video-sharing platforms or sites. Just type the following search terms: christening speeches…christening speech examples….christening speech by godparents…
Now, wait for just a minute for more videos to pop out. Watch as many as you can and put down all the thoughts and ideas that come to you.
Having done that, read over what you’ve got and see which ones you want to use for your message.
Another place you can get ideas from is…
To Go Find The Greatest Book That Made Your Life So Successful!
Wondering what this book is? The bible! There are so many scriptural verses and stories that will inspire you to come with good words.
Now, let us look at some bible verses or scriptural readings you can use and then we will look at how we can use some of them to write something short and sweet without racking your brains.
Here they are:
Galatians 3:26-29 King James Version
''For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.
And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.''
Peter 2:9 King James Version (KJV)
''But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light;''
Titus 2:11-14 King James Version (KJV)
''For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;
Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;
Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.''
Psalm 127:3-5 King James Version (KJV)
''Lo, children are a heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is his reward. As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth. Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.''
Proverbs 22:6
''Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.''
1 Timothy 1 New International Version (NIV)
''Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope.
To Timothy my true son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.''
Now, let’s briefly use one or two of the above to express our thoughts.
Even before Josephine was born, we couldn’t help but wait in joyful anticipation.
I remember telling Evelyn prior to her arrival that she was going to be a special girl.
When she arrived, she was so much loved by the family and
Evelyn was stunned to have this cute little girl.
All along, our earnest prayer has been that the grace of God rests on her each and every day.
By the grace of God, we brought her to church this morning, our hearts were filled with gratitude and excitement as she got baptized in the presence of the Lord almighty, family and friends.
I know for sure that today marks a new beginning in her life as her baptism is the greatest gift she’s will ever get in her life and it’s more than enough to carry her through life…As his godfather, I take pride in the fact that …
Did you notice that I just the words here: Titus 2:11 King James Version (KJV)
11 For the grace of God…to do justice to the above? Can you do the same? I am very confident you have what it takes to do that brilliantly.
Another place you can see is to you want rich ideas is…
When This Hits You, You Feel A Bitter-Sweet Pain…So Go For It!
There are a lot of wonderful tunes that can inspire you to write down your thoughts
Here are some wonderful baby dedication songs you can use.
First on the list is Debby Kerner & Ernie Rettino masterpiece '' Welcome To The Family'' and below is the video
See lyrics below
Welcome to the family,
We are glad that you have come
To share your life with us,
As we grow in love,
And may we always be to you
What God would have us be,
A family always there,
To be strong and to lean on.
May we learn to love each other
More with each new day,
May words of love be on our lips
In ev’ry thing we say.
May the Spirit melt our hearts,
And teach us how to pray,
That we might be a true family.
Here are the title tracks of other songs you can use.
- " A Mother's Prayer'' by Rachel Aldous
- "In My Arms" by Plumb (Tiffany Lee Arbuckle; Matt Bronleewe; Jeremy Bose)
- ‘’Placed In A Family Of Love’’ by Twila Paris
- ‘’The Family Of God’’ by Gloria and William. J. Gaither
Yes, I know you want to see how best we can use any of the lyrics above to compose something short and this is what I would do if I were you.
So, here you go:
Sample Short Christening or Baptism Speech by Sponsor or Godparents
Now, read through this extract carefully and make note
''Ladies and gentlemen, I had this wild wish growing up.
When I was a young person growing up, anytime someone asked me how many children I was going to have, I would look straight into their eyes and say: 20 kids!
And you should have seen the expression of shock on people’s face whenever I said that!
Well, God blessed me with 5 smart and strong boys and that probably explains why I have greyed twice as much!
Well, when Mimi asked me to be Joe’s god mom, I felt very blessed and I felt like it was the continuation of one of my wildest dreams!
Wow! Who said dreams don’t come to pass!
By the way, children are a special gift from God and a treasure to parents and this morning as we stood with Mike and Jenny and our cute bundle of blessings in front of God, I began to imagine what this cute little baby’s future will be like!
I know we all want the very best for this special child but we shouldn’t forget that before he was formed in his mom’s womb and even dedicated him to God, he had better plans for him more than we could ever imagine!
Even though I turned 65 just yesterday, my heart is so much at rest because I believe God would grant me long life to help Joe grow into a very beautiful boy.
I know there will be what looks like rivers to cross, deadly storms and mountains in every aspect life of his, but I know for sure God will help us will do to love and cherish him every step of the way.
I am confident he will make the right decisions as the Lord will order his steps because he belongs to God’s royal family and we are so happy to welcome him to our big beautiful family''
Have you any idea how we used the lyrics to come up with that?
We used words from the song "In My Arms" and Welcome to the Family and Mother's Prayer (Hannah's Song) Lyrics!
That’s exactly how to use songs to write naming ceremony speeches. I forgot to tell you this…
If you can sing, then you can render your words in the song, that would be great and you might even get a standing ovation! You may also consult poems about birth, family, christening and other readings you hear in church can help you out too!
Another angle to look at will be…
Good Stories
Let me ask you these questions:
- Do you really know of any child who has been impacted as a result of his or her dedication?
- Do you have any other godchildren?
- If you do, is there any one of them whose life stands out?
- How did you help raise that child or how has the journey been like?
Just go down memory lane and see if you remember those experiences and that can be used as a starting point for your message
To illustrate, if I were to use the story of one of your ‘’successful’’ godchildren, these are questions I will ask myself so I can put down something.
- How did I feel when I was asked to be a godparent?
- How did I feel when we awaited the arrival of the child?
- How was the feeling like when he or she was born?
- How did you help his or her parents prepare for his or her baptism?
- How was the feeling like on the day the baby was dedicated to the Lord?
- Do you remember what you said?
- What was your prayer or your best wishes?
- How were things like when the baby was growing up and how did you help ''shepherd'' him or her?
Please if you write answers to these questions, you can simply put together your responses together and write something short and sweet based on that.
Just pour out what’s on your heart.
Your write-up will look rough on your first try. But, you don’t have to give up.
Go back to it another time and keep reviewing it till it sounds good!
You may tweak the above questions to be:
- How long have you known the proud parents and how well do you know them?
- How did I feel when you were asked to be a godparent?
- How did you feel when we awaited the arrival of the child?
- How was the feeling like when he or she was born?
- How did you help his or her parents prepare for his or her baptism?
- How was the feeling like on the day the baby was dedicated to the Lord?
- Any stories about your relationship with the parents of the baby?
- What is your prayer or your best wishes or how you believe his or her future will be like?
At last! The Easiest and Proven Way to Write Your Christening Speech!
Most people do take examples for granted but almost everything you can find is based on the work of those who have come before us.
What that means is that you have to look for well- written examples to get a fair idea of what to say.
Now, let’s take a look at this short example
Dear Baby Noah!
In just over a week we will be standing with your parents in front of God, me holding you tightly in my arms.
Your parents will dedicate your life back to the Lord and at the same time, I will thank God for blessing me with a beautiful godson. You are a blessing to us all. Your smile warms my heart. Your laugh melts my soul.
Before your first special day, I want you to know a few things. The first being, I love you. I have always loved you. As children your mother and I dreamed of having families of our own, but never did we dream of anything as beautiful as you. I look at you and see the best reflection of your mother. I pray you have her strong spirit and gentle touch.
I pray you exceed far greater than anything your mother or I can dream of. Please remember, no matter where you go or who you become, I love you, and I will always love you.
You will fail if you copy this word for word. Instead, you’ve got to personalize it by borrowing a few words here and there.
A couple of ideas come to mind as I write.
First, what you have to realize that the example above is a letter. But it’s pretty easy to change this into a speech
Let’s change this part into something else: In just over a week we will be standing with your parents in front of God, me holding you tightly in my arms. Your parents will dedicate your life back to the Lord and at the same time, I will thank God for blessing me with a beautiful godson. You are a blessing to us all. Your smile warms my heart. Your laugh melts my soul…
Now, here we go:
''I thank God for blessing me with a beautiful godson. Noah is a blessing to us and his cute smile warms my heart and his laugh just melts my soul!’’
I do hope you can change the second part into something heartfelt:
Before your first special day, I want you to know a few things. The first being, I love you. I have always loved you. As children your mother and I dreamed of having families of our own, but never did we dream of anything as beautiful as you.
I look at you and see the best reflection of your mother. I pray you have her strong spirit and gentle touch. I pray you exceed far greater than anything your mother or I can dream of. Please remember, no matter where you go or who you become, I love you, and I will always love you.''
I believe in you and I hope you can! Don’t give up because you’re a special person!
