Father Of The Groom Speech Example
Good evening and welcome everyone.
I’m John, Dan’s dad and it gives me great joy and honor to see the smiling faces of so many people who love and cherish my son, the bride and both families.
We have waited for months for this special time and would like to thank everyone, especially Michelle’s family, who has flown all the way from South Africa to share in our joy and happiness.
Back in 1980, when Dan, our precious little gem was born, we were the happiest parents on earth.
Very determined to be one of the greatest parents ever, we would spend, what seemed like hours, just adoring and playing with the precious gift God had blessed me with. What was in store for him for the rest of his life, of course, we just couldn’t figure out.
But, I had a dream that someday, Dan would grow up into a happy, loving, loyal, responsible, and compassionate human being.
But, I knew it was our responsibility to make that happen since what you give back to your children is what they give back to the world and the next generation.
And so we gave him unconditional love, hoping that he, too, would grow into a loving person and share his heart and blessings with others.
Watching Dan mature into a fine young man like a fragrant flower in bloom as the years whizzed by was my greatest joy ever.
Dan, I stand here in front of you today, the proudest dad that ever lived because you are the fulfillment of our cherished dreams.
Deep down in my heart, I know I have done my very best to be your dad. Being your dad is a joy and privilege and I want you to know I love you so much.
But, as you are pretty much aware, there are so many decisions the most caring dad can’t make for his son no matter the depth of his love.
And so, I prayed and hoped that you would act like a sage every step of the way.
When you became best friends with Michelle, I had this comforting assurance that you had met the love of your life and I’m so excited that you’ve found such a dignified woman.
And to you Michelle, we are thankful that you agreed to marry Dan. If there were ever one person in this entire world I could pick for him, it would be you and only you.
We are blessed that you now are a part of our family and we know you’re going to be an amazing wife seeing you’re a thoughtful, sensitive and loving person as well.
On this note, I’d like to welcome you into our family with open arms and we know that the new bonds of friendship forged will wax stronger in the years ahead.
What makes me even more excited for both of you is the fact you both have this keen sense of humor that will help a great deal when difficulties arise.
Your marriage like all others will certainly have its share of conflict, frustration, boredom, unresolvable arguments, slammed doors and even nights when one person sleeps on the couch and the other on the bed but what I want you to bear in mind is that we don’t worry marry the person we can live with.
Rather, we marry the person we can’t live without.
So, you have to let go quickly if you find yourselves entangled in that situation.
Guess what? The smartest investor that ever lived will tell you over and over again that all kinds of investment options can be very risky.
But, that’s not the case when you decide to invest in loving each other till the end of time.
Loving each other each day of your lives like there’s no tomorrow is the fail-proof investment every couple can ever make given that love never fails.
Yes, it never fails.
So, always invest your time and energy in making each other happy. In making each other laugh when times are tough and in making each other feel loved.
Unconditional love will keep your souls very much intact and alive and will also be your safety net you have an empty nest.
I look forward to a life of pure joy for both of you and I want you to experience life to the fullest.
I look forward to babies (if that’s in the cards), and babies, babies.
Never mind if they are uncountable as the stars because I will be there to give them my boundless love and support.
God bless you and I wish you the very best.
Wow...Wow...Wow...How would you grade this very fine example? It's perfect, right? It’s short, lovely and heartfelt!

I think keeping promises is the right thing to do. So, we are going to analyze the speech example above so you can appreciate the essence of using father of the groom speech examples to tie your thoughts and emotions together beautifully like a skilled wordsmith.
It all starts by creating this first: Guess what that is?
Father Of The Groom Speech Example Outline
Let’s dive into the components of the speech outline or structure:
- Introduction
- Body
- Conclusion
Shall we dive into each part with the right examples? Ok, let’s do that.
First and foremost, let’s look at the introduction or opening lines of this speech. Here's a recap from the previous example:
'' Good evening and welcome everyone.
I’m John, Dan’s dad and it gives me great joy and honor to see the smiling faces of so many people who love and cherish my son and the entire family.
We have waited for months for this special time and would like to thank everyone, especially Michelle’s family, who has flown all the way from South Africa to share in our joy and happiness.''
My comments/ writing ideas: On this same blog, I taught about the importance of starting your toast on a memorable note and that's exactly what you have seen here.
The writer weaves into his opening lines the essential elements of a good opener. They include the following pointers:
- Greeting your family and friends based on when the wedding reception or rehearsal is happening.
Here’s an example:
Hello everyone. Good evening and I hope you are having a wonderful time. I’m Lin and I’m Marc’s father. On behalf of his mom Melissa and I, we’d like to thank all of you for joining us in this very special celebration.
- The father of the groom mentions his name and his relationship to the groom and bride
- Thank the guests for coming from far and near to support his son and daughter-in-law on such a special occasion
Please note: There are a couple of other things he could have added to enrich his introductory remarks. He could have added stuff like:
- Thanking the bride’s family for welcoming his son into their family because the father or mother of the bride might have spoken before he did.
I know you might want to ask this question: What if I will be delivering this speech at the rehearsal and not at the reception?
In that case, just thank the bride’s parents for their love and support without commenting about their speeches since it's not customary for the parents of the bride to deliver one at the rehearsal dinner. Though, some are deviating from the norm.
As part of your introduction, you can thank those who helped raise your son as seen in the example below:
''I would like to take this moment to thank Simon and Amanda – my parents who cared for Dan and for the love and support all these years, etc.''
There are other family members and friends you can add to the gratitude list. Do you have other folks on the list you wish to say thank you to?
The body follows the introduction.
Don’t Joke With This Aspect Of Your Father Of The Groom Wedding Speech.
The body is the heartbeat of your wedding speech, so you should do all you can to make sure it goes off without a hitch. For this part, we can split up the body into two parts.
First, let’s cover part 1 of the body. Here's an excerpt to inspire our thinking:
''Back in 1980, when Dan, our precious little gem was born, we were the happiest parents on earth.
Very determined to be one of the greatest parents ever, we would spend, what seemed like hours, just adoring and playing with the precious gift God had blessed me with.
What was in store for him for the rest of his life, of course, we just couldn’t figure out.''
My comments/ writing ideas: The writer masterfully kick starts his speech by capturing the attention of the guests when he says...
''Back in 1980, when Dan, our precious little gem was born'' as he uses the storytelling approach of engaging the audience from the onset.
Suppose, you also want to use this storytelling approach, then you’ve got put down memories of how you felt when your son was born.
Recently, I wrote a speech for a very wonderful man and he asked that I include a funny incident about when he was expecting his first child. He was so nervous like a frying fish in hot oil that he had totally forgotten where the family car was parked that when it was announced that he had to move his car to let someone drive out. Hence, he lost his sanity at that moment.
That anecdote made his father of the groom's speech so nice, relatable, and special that the guests really enjoyed every bit of it.
Here’s your homework speech writing assignment: Please relax and write down what happened and how you felt prior and after your son’s delivering. If you don’t remember all the details, you can ask his mom about it and she would be happy to help you out.
Ok, let's get to part 2 of the body of the speech. Again, here's a short summary to guide us forward.
''But, I had a dream that someday, Dan would grow up into a happy, loving, loyal, responsible, and compassionate human being.
But, I knew it was our responsibility to make that happen since what you give back to your children is what they give back to the world.
And so we gave him unconditional love, hoping that he, too, would share his love with others.
Watching Dan mature into a fine young man like a fragrant flower in bloom as the years whizzed by was my greatest joy ever.''
My comments/ writing ideas: You can infer from the above extract that Dan's dad is so proud of him.
Now, sit back and ask yourself why you are so proud of your son. If you've got a couple of ideas, just write them down.
You can simply mention his accomplishments or simply mention why you are ecstatic that he's found the love of his life.
Ok, let's look at other parts of this narrative.
''Dan, I stand here in front of you today, the proudest dad that ever lived because you are the fulfillment of our cherished dreams.
When you became best friends with Amanda, I had this comforting assurance that you had met the love of your life and I’m so excited that you’ve found such a dignified woman.''
My comments/ writing ideas: First, you have to come up with an outline for your father of the groom speech and then stuff it with goods for your message. You can do that by writing down answers to simple questions like these:
- Why are you so proud of your son?
- What were your dreams for him growing up?
- Why were you excited when they became best friends?
The ''game'' is not over yet...so let's look at another aspect of your speech: including your new daughter-in-law.
''And to you Amanda, we are thankful that you agreed to marry Adam. If there were ever one person in this entire world I could pick for him, it would be you and only you.
We are blessed that you now are a part of our family and we know you’re going to be an amazing wife seeing you’re a thoughtful, sensitive and loving person as well.
On this note, I’d like to welcome you into our family with open arms and we know that the new bonds of friendship forged will wax stronger in the years ahead.''
My comments/ writing ideas: After you have said something about your son, you have to talk about your daughter-in-law too. Here, you can about her admirable qualities and how you felt when she became your son's best friend.
Someone asked me the other day, what if you know very little or even nothing about her? Great question… I am glad that the fellow asked it.
Well, in that case, you have to be honest by making a statement like this one:
''Every woman deserves to love and be loved, respected, care for and am happy you've found someone who really loves you. ''
Or like this one:
You can say something along these lines: '' I can see from the look in your eyes that you really love each other and i hope and pray that your love for each other will get you through whatever life throws at you.''
How To Use Father Of The Groom Speech Examples To Write The Ending Of Your Speech
The conclusion comes after the body.
The speech sample continues...
''What makes me even more excited for both of you is the fact you both have this keen sense of humor that will help a great deal when difficulties arise.
Your marriage like all others will certainly have its share of conflict, frustration, boredom, unresolvable arguments, slammed doors and even nights when one person sleeps on the couch and the other on the bed but what I want you to bear in mind is that we don’t worry marry the person we can live with.

God bless you and I wish you the very best. ''
My comments/ writing ideas: As you see from the above passage, you should end with a piece of advice or you can simply wish the happy couple well or even add a verse from the bible to close it if you are a Christian.
Now, i want you to think about this. Most conclusions of father of the groom speeches sound the same, if not similar.
Is there are any way you can make yours unique and different?
A hint: you may end by playing a musical instrument. You can also sing a good song if you have a nice voice. This wonderful dad held everyone spellbound with his performance.
What about ending with a memorable quote like this one?
Somebody who betters you. Somebody
who inspires and encourages you in love
and in life, who pushes you towards
dreams and goals you’d otherwise ignore,
who selflessly sacrifices their time to
helping you become a more courageous,
well rounded and happy human being.
That’s sacred. You hold onto a love like that.
